It might not be enough to say we heart Grey Gardens. We are starry-eyed, singing to ourselves, unable to eat, head-over-heels in love with the celebrated, cult favorite documentary.
For the uninitiated, Grey Gardens is the 1975 documentary by brothers Albert and David Maysles detailing the lives of mother and daughter duo, Edith “Big Edie” Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale. The fascinating film about these relatives of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis (Big Edie was the aunt and Little Edie the cousin of the former first lady) is both a love story and a cautionary tale. The two woman, hiding from the pains of life, hole up in their East Hampton home, the last refuge of a former life of luxury and ease. Here they seem to hide from the rest of the world, seeing few people, collecting a menagerie of cats (and more!) while their home crumbles around them. Still amidst the decay and squalor, you will see the enduring love between mother and daughter and get to know some truly staunch characters in the process.
The original film has garnered a cult following and spawned a Broadway musical, books, cds, and even pop songs. Its popularity will be reaching new heights with the release of HBO films Grey Gardens, a scripted drama based on the lives of the Beales starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. Grey Gardens fanatics have been waiting for-ever to see this film and finally, a date has been set. First, here’s a sneak peek at the upcoming film:
