Sweet Grass Farm, Farmhouse Collection review

April 15, 2009 | By: Tyna Werner

In honor of Earth Day (it’s right around the corner, April 22nd) we wanted to highlight the lovely Sweet Grass Farm, a New Hampshire based line of all natural soaps and herbal products. This naturally green company has perfected body care and home products that are as fresh smelling and gentle as they are hardworking. Sweet Grass Farm started in the founders’ home kitchen, where time was spent crafting recipes for natural, good-for-you body care products and soaps. Lucky for us, they soon decided to share their labor of love with the world and Sweet Grass Farm was born.

We were excited to test a few bars of their most popular item, their amazing Hand Stirred Soaps. This collection of soaps, available in 14 delish scents, are created from “high quality vegetable oils, spring water, pure essential oils, herbs and nutrients.” Each bar is pretty and unique; they last forever and are great for any skin type. At $4 a pop, they are a luxurious, yet economical treat. And with scents like Lemon & Lavender, Rose Orange Cinnamon and New England Woods; you’ll want to sample a couple!

Recently, Sweet Grass Farm introduced The Farmhouse Collection, a series of products designed “to make housekeeping a little easier and a little sweeter.” The Farmhouse Collection includes natural necessities for the home like the Farmhouse Laundry Concentrate (a low sudsing, biodegradable powder), Farmhouse Linen & Room Spray (available in three delectable scents) and the (plant based, gentle on hands) Farmhouse Liquid Dish Soap. Here at we heart this, we received the Farmhouse Furniture Wax for testing. Made of the “hardest of natural waxes, carnauba, and (with) a concoction that nourishes your fine wood furniture and leaves it with a beautiful, protective sheen.” The wax is packaged in a sweet and simple tin that will be reusable once I’ve used all the goodness inside. I tested the Fresh White Lilac wax on my neglected mahogany bookcases and fireplace mantle. It is a simple and fast fix to get your wood glowing. Just rub the furniture wax on the wood (I used a sandwich baggie to for this), let it set for a minute, and buff it with a soft cloth (an old tee shirt is best). Voila – a fresh smelling room and refreshed wood! Take a look at these before and after pictures with just one application of the wax:

Pretty nice for five minutes of my time! The Farmhouse Collection is based upon the natural cleaning properties of pure essential oils, which makes cleaning a touch easier to handle. Just take a look at the yummy scents that populate this line and you’ll know what I mean; Pure Lavender, (lavender blossoms and stems, balanced with eucalyptus and citrus notes), Fresh White Lilac (a light and green true smell of the flower) and Lemon Verbena (zesty citrus with lemon oil and sharp notes of verbena). I was surprised at the noticeable difference in the scent of these products as opposed the weird, artificial scents of many cleaning products. The scent was so fresh and bright that when I walked into the room my nose was tricked into thinking there was a vase of fresh flowers somewhere.

Review team: please tell our readers what you thought of the Hand Stirred Soap and the Farmhouse Furniture Wax.

I don’t usually use bar soaps, because they tend to leave my skin feeling dry, but the Rosemary & Lavender captivated my nostrils and I was interested to try it. The scent isn’t too strong but smells fresh and wakes me up. I love the fresh spring smell on these dark, rainy, spring mornings we have been having. This is really great to help wake me up and it makes my mornings seem brighter! Sweet Grass Farms uses two different oils, olive and coconut oil, and this helps to keep my skin from drying out. It actually leaves me feeling soft and smooth. This is a really good soap and I like it. It even lathers up really well, which I like. More so than the body wash I was using, it makes me feel cleaner. I’m interested in trying the Vanilla & Oatmeal or the Green Tea & Seaweed. I would also like to try some of the lotions.

I got the Farmhouse furniture wax in Fresh Lilac as well. And like Tyna’s shelves, my coffee and end tables take a beating. They’re this lovely Mid Century modern maple set that seems to always be dusty and dirty (ah, desert living!) and my dogs have this horrible habit of leaning their bones up against the legs for a better grip while chewing them, so there’s little nicks and scratches everywhere. The wax was super easy to use and the wood just drank it up. It cleaned it, filled all the scratches and made the nicks less noticeable. Best of all, the scent! It totally smelled like we had a bouquet of fresh lilac in the house. The true test, Hubby walked and and said “what’s that? It smells real nice!” (Imagine it in a English accent) Really nice stuff!

I received the Lemon Scrubbie Bar Soap for testing. I did not use it in my shower; as the packaging advised this bar work particularly well in the kitchen, especially with cooking smells. SO, next to the kitchen sink it went! I’m giving this five stars! I had switched to liquid soap some time ago, but this bar soap may call me back. First, I loved the fresh, lemony scent. Second, the soap was not dying at all – the tiny scrubbies and soap left my hands smooth and soft. Third, as Tyna mentioned, the bars last a nice long time (they do not just disappear into the air like some commercial bar soaps). Fourth, I love how this soap gets rid of cooking/chopping smells! It’s great for when you are chopping onions or garlic or the like. Loved it and now want to try some (like the Rose Orange Cinnamon) in the shower.

I got the Sweet Grass soap in Lavender to test. This smells amazing, like a fresh plant. And it has the charm (and the price!) of a soap you’d pick up at a Farmer’s Market. Hand-poured, charming little wrapper. I liked it a lot. As a matter of fact, I think I’m going to get 6 or so of them and keep them on hand for hostess gifts and things like that. They’re totally prefect for little “thinking of you” types of gifts.

I finally got my mitts on this amazing bar of Sweet Grass Farm all-natural Hand cut soap in “Pure Lavender”. I have always been a big fan of all kinds of lavender. Mostly for it’s soothing properties. This bar of soap is no mere bar of soap at all! You practically owe your allegiance to it. It really came in handy after a long and stressful day. Not only does is remind me of a field of lavender flowers, it really has the ability to calm your wired stressful self in minutes.. Like the take me away Calgon commercials.. It’s powerful relaxing properties are unmatched. It also lathered up with only a small amount of the soap. I was also happy with its moisturizing affect as well. My hands looked great and smelled wonderful! I have used pure lavender in spray/mist form and in some shower gels. This wound up being a real treat! I could smell it while it sat in the bottom of my bag of goodies from WHT. I could not wait to check it out immediately! I also appreciated its pretty yet simple packaging. It has that personal touch that I’m drawn to. I’m dying to try the Rose Orange Cinnamon too.. I give this product a bunch of stars! Like five!
