Packaging porn – Hourglass Prodigy lip gloss
Though new formulas come around on a fairly regular basis, the world of lip gloss doesn’t see too many innovations as far as packaging goes. Wand, squeeze tube, pot; we’ve seen them all before. Until now…
Leave it to Hourglass, makers of the fabulous 360 swivel mirror compact to change that. Introducing Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss
($26). It’s packaged in a copper-toned metallic flat tube that fits perfectly into the palm of your hand. The sleek design can also tuck discretely into your pocket. And oh, the way this feels! Smooth, with tapered edges, it’s kind of begging to be fondled. If lip gloss caressing is your sort of thing (it is mine!)
To dispense the gloss, pop off the top to reveal the slanted tip and gently squeeze the soft plastic area that holds the color.
Best of all? We were convinced that this was smaller than a standard size wand gloss. It’s actually bigger! Glosses on my vanity range from .15 to .2 ounces and Prodigy is a hefty .25 ounces.
How about the gloss itself, you ask? Fabulous, I say! Hourglass Extreme Sheen is my absolute favorite gloss and this rivals it. It’s got added vitamin E, so it’s very hydrating. It’s super silky and not at all sticky. And absolutely fragrance (and taste) free, which is great and kind of surprising. Seriously, when’s the last time you used a gloss that didn’t smell like a candy cane/cupcake/artificial fruit of some sort?
I got to try Pulse, described as a sheer ginger shimmer (it’s a bright coral tinged peach). But for a sheer, it’s got a decent amount of color deposit. It’s also very shiny and the gold sparkles like tiny little diamonds! Really beautiful.
Sadly, it’s not out yet. This will be available Spring 2010. But I think it’s well worth the wait. Your wait just got a lot shorter. Just heard that these are in Barney’s NOW and will be at Sephora on February 18th!

Seriously you shouldn’t show me this…especially since I can’t run out and get one yet. I want it!! Love all the Hourglass glosses I own and will most definitely be checking this out.
Ooooooohhhh… I keep seeing this gloss everywhere, I’m totally lemming it! I have a feeling this gloss is going to be a little birthday gift to myself once it comes out
I love how sleek and sexy this packaging is! The applicator reminds me of L’oreal’s HiP lip gloss, which I loved. BUT, I wonder how great it will be once it gets down to half empty. Do you think the packaging will make it hard to squeeze once it stops being full?
Tiffany, I know. I feel slightly guilty sharing something you can’t buy immediately! But a little longing never hurt anyone (except maybe Van Gogh).
Alyssa, I thought the same thing about what happens when it gets low in product. The plastic bit that holds the product is pretty soft, I think I should be able to really squeeze it without a problem. But I’ll def. report back!

Remarkable! I still need to see this up close and personal! Looking forward to it’s coming for sure!
OMG, that gloss looks gorgeous! I love the term “packaging porn” b/c the way I now “have to have” this lipgloss is obscene…
I love sheer, yet still pigmented glosses….*sigh*
I see a Sephora trip in my near future! This would fit so nicely into a slim pocket too for all those clubbing nights (or Babies R Us trips for me now) ha! This will definitely be prime work lunch table discussion worthy – just gorgeous! Will be excited to hear the report back Stef, on if the latter half comes out well…but I think I’ll still have to try it anyways…
Lol, I was thinking the same thing Mel! Wow, Stef I’m having major gloss envy right now! Hmm… hits Sephora on Feb 18th and my bday is Feb 20th?!? Think that’s a sign I need to have this! : ) I love the packaging design! I can’t tell you how many times I’m at a bar or concert and don’t really want to carry a purse around, but NEED my lipgloss… this would be great to slip in a pocket and go. I love the amount of shimmer Hourglass gloss has too…I use them all the time, alone, or on top of lipstick. LOVE THIS!!!
I have all ways used chap stick instead of gloss. *looking around to make sure no chap stick is listening* But I’m having an affair with lip gloss! I just discovered some wonderful glosses and my chap stick has taken a backseat, and this gloss looks like it may just be my next conquest! *sigh*
I need. Sephora La Cantera here I come.
Could Hourglass be any more fabulous! They already had my heart with their gorgeous packaging and now this!! Have to have it as sooooon as it’s available.
Hourglass…so heart-able
You had me at “Hourglass.” What creative design elves are at work in their home office? I picture them playing team games in tee shirts emblazoned with “How outta da box are we?” If I can find this, and if it does not weld my two lips together this may be my HG gloss. I’m so psyched about trying it that I freaked out in a colleague’s office yesterday, mistaking her teensy Samsung cell phone for this. Sephora, put me out of my misery and stock it.
Ha Joan! Did she understand or think you you were crazy? And once again – Best Avatar Ever! I want to squeeze that kitty in a hat so bad.
I got to see this awesome new gloss – but for some reason didn’t test it? The packaging feels fantastic in your hands and it really can slip into a pocket or super slim clutch. Plus the design seemed secure – no worries about gloss all over the place. And as Stef mentioned, with the sleek, sexy design we thought for sure the amount of gloss was half of a normal wand – we were thrilled when we realized you get extra gloss in this pretty little package.
I really love the Hourglass packaging people! I can’t post about Hourglass without mentioning just how fabulous their swivel mirror compacts are! Imo, they are the best compacts on the market.

Yep, my kitty has attitude to spare. And my colleague knows I am crazy, so this hallucination was just the latest evidence.
