MAC Superglass review and swatches

superglassA1 MAC Superglass review and swatches photos: we heart this

Imagine that you love something, truly love it. Like say…Girl Scout Thin Mints. They’re the best thing in the world to you. Nothing comes close. And then, one day it’s announced that they’re releasing SUPER Thin Mints. You nearly die, how could it be? How could they possibly make them any better?! This is how it was for me when I first heard about MAC Superglass, the newest member to the lipglass family. How could they make their glasses even more super? Why, with glitter of course. But not just any old glitter….

The glitter in these (as you can see in the above Cherry Electric swatch, in the tube and on my arm) is far from standard. MAC calls it “secret, snowflake-shaped helicone pearls in three different facets”. What does that mean exactly? They’re flakes and slivers of glitter, rather than a round shape. They also seems to have a slightly holographic look to them. As light hits them, they seem to change colors and shine even brighter. The effect is positively gorgeous. Want proof? Check out makeup artist Dustin Hunter’s video of these in motion. Tell me you’re not mesmerized!

Of the nine limited edition shades, I received two to test. First up is Superflash! MAC describes this as “mid tone yellow pink”. To me, I see this as a medium salmon pink (it’s slightly coral-tinged). The glitter ranges from golden orange to holographic silver. For the above photo, I applied it over MAC’s Strawberry Blonde lipstick (a LE little slice of heaven that is my favorite coral l/s ever). I can see getting a lot of wear out of this, as I would imagine it looks just as fab over pinks.

Next up is Cherry Electric. MAC calls it “bright cherry pink”. I call it 70’s roller disco meets pornstar meets rocker babe. Seriously, this looks like a party in a tube. It’s fun, and aptly named- it’s an electric reddish pink. This is more pigmented than Superflash! and the glitter ranges from bright fuchsia to orange gold. I’m wearing it over BE Buxom Lips in Monte Carlo (but any number of MAC bright pinks would be equally fab).

These feel thick on your lips, there’s no mistaking these for a balm! I happen to like the way they feel. And they’re definitely on the sticky side (which also makes them long wearing). The downsides? The glitter tends to migrate as the gloss wears away. And they also look better when you don’t “mess” with them a lot. I found when I smacked my lips, the glitter tends to get lost in your lipstick, totally ruining the effect. I found patting these on (as opposed to brushing) over a slightly drier finish lipstick worked best. And they really do work best layered over a product. On their own, they’re on the sheer side.

Finally, I’m awarding these the Packaging Porn moniker for their lucite-looking hexagonal faceted tube. Not only do they look good, but they won’t roll off your table. Good looking and smart, you got to love that.

I highly suggest any lip gloss lover picks up at least one of these! I guarantee, you have nothing like them.

I’ve been eyeing since the promo pics came out. I really love Cherry Electric and Tunnel of Love which looks great. I’m trying not to purchase them since I have so many lipglasses and lipsticks already.

These look like the perfect party gloss though! If only I hadn’t just made a MAC order and bought an eyeshadow from the Liberty of London collection.

WOW WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I had no idea it was so out right sparkly! I must go see this with my own eyes! If it looks like this in a picture, I can only imagine what it looks like in person! I am liking the Superglass Superflash- OH, the Cherry Electric looks amazing too!

Thanks everyone. Yep, my BFA in photography came in handy for these! Actually, this is like my ideal photo assignment. “You need me to capture the sparkle in these beautiful lipglosses? I’m on it!”

Make sure to check out the rest of the shades on Temptalia (who also turned me on to Dustin’s video that I listed above).

I love these. I can’t wait to whip them out for a special occasion. So far, I’ve only been wearing them around town and the people who work at my local grocery store must think I’m pretty fancy!

Soo pretty! I have to chime in with everyone else and say what fab pics these are @stef! The dazzle and glitter on the swatch and your lips in these photos is amazing – you can even see the jagged edges of the glitter.

Even though I know I couldn’t wear the Cherry Electric (reds and my skin tone do not mix) I totally covet it. Not too red, so sparkly and so pretty.

@Stef -What great photos! You do very well capturing the beauty of the glosses, even better than the MAC site! They should hire you :) And thanks for the tip on the giveaway! I’m on a self (and husband) imposed lipgloss ban for a little while, but free as in lipglass never hurt anyone ;)

@stef, your photos are AMAZING! OMG, I am transfixed on your lower lip wearing Cherry Electric. This MUST be mine. I’ve never seen anything like these (except for maybe in nail polish form but that totally doesn’t count). Thanks for creating the most major lemming of all time for me.
