Let’s escort out 2016 and welcome in 2017 with a series of we heart this’ favorite time-killing game: 3 things! All this week we’ll be getting our list on. Join us, won’t you?
Although it totally seemed like 2016 had WAY more downs (David Bowie RIP) than ups (but hey, we’re getting a lady on our $20 bill!), I get the ebb and flow that is life. Here are three things I did in 2016 that had me smiling…
3 things: My Favorite Moments of 2016
1. I got a tattoo.
I got my first tattoo when I was 18 years old, a quarter-size flower picked from flash art in a seedy Philadelphia tattoo parlor. I got it on the back of my shoulder, so I rarely see it, which is a good thing because it’s pretty terrible. I spent the next 18+ years planning my next one. And all those years of thinking paid off because I now have a piece that I love courtesy of Jorell of Outer Limits Tattoo in Long Beach, CA.
I wanted something with meaning (that’s 18 long years of doubting if my ideas “meant” enough!) and I ended up with two large ranunculus blooms on my forearm. A member of the buttercup family, they’re water-seeking flowers, which seemed perfect for a water-lover that somehow ended up in the desert. But the real meaning of the the tattoo ended up being the process of it all and the time I spent with Jorell, which just happened to be during a sort of crossroads/introspective point for me. It was four hours on the California coast, talking about things that made us happy like dogs and beer, and I left with a gorgeous visual reminder that life, no matter how messy it is at times, is truly beautiful.
2. I went to the LA County Fair
My annual pilgrimage to the LA County Fair is always a highlight for me. I’ve been going for at least 10 years and was even the first official Fair Foodie in 2010. It’s the one day a year that I eat, drink, play and laugh with total abandon. 2016 did not disappoint. I tried Deep Fried Nutella for the first time and all was right with the world. If you follow me on Instagram at @weheartthisdotcom you may have even see me eat it live, in which case, I apologize.
3. I became a mermaid.
I’m not going to lie, I’ve done some pretty incredible things through we heart this. And while appearing in a John Frieda ad that was filmed in NYC was amazing, and visiting Paws Up Ranch in Montana was epic, right up there was my once-in-a-lifetime underwater photography session with Clinique. Dressed in a gown, with a face full of their latest summer-proof makeup, I floated through the pool and tried to look ethereal (and not swallow too much water). Pretty awesome!
