Three perfect-for-spring products for only $22!

It’s springtime at we heart this and we are putting away all the dark colors of fall and winter and pulling out the peaches and the pinks. Perfect for spring is the Pixi Hello Rose! Set.

This lovely pink-hued trio is exactly what this girl needed to step into spring. This gorgeous set includes their Beauty Blush Duo in Rose Gold, LipLift Max gloss in Sheer Rose and their Glow Booster luminizing lotion in PinkPearl. Who needs rose-colored glasses when you can wear rose-colored makeup? (Seriously, I want to know…)

The Rose Gold Beauty Blush Duo is a screw top compact housed in their signature minty green plastic. One side of this pot is gorgeous medium rose blush with some sheen and the other side is an icy pink highlighter shade.

My first thought upon seeing this duo is going to be perfect not only for cheeks but eyes, too. Seriously, ladies–this was multitasking love for me! The blush is not extremely pigmented, which is great because for those of you who are color shy, you can truly build the sheer blush to your desired level. The highlighter pan is great for adding an extra pop to cheekbones and at the brow bones for a mini eyelift. The medium rose shade is extremely subtle as an eye shadow and utterly natural. Love, love, love!

The LipLift Max gloss in Sheer Rose is just that–an extremely sheer rose shade. Swatched, you can see the dusty rose hue. But on my lips, it’s almost colorless. Perfect for adding some shine to other lip colors. This gloss is housed in a square plastic tube and has a doe foot applicator.

The gloss tingles a little bit (to plump your pout) and smells like peppermint and some unidentifiable herb. I’ve never used a lipgloss that felt invigorating before, but this definitely qualifies! I need a bit more color, so I pressed some of the Rose Gold blush into the gloss and it gave me just the right amount of tint and changed the consistency to that of a lipstick. Seriously, so pretty!

Pixi’s Glow Booster in PinkPearl is a “glow-enhancing lotion” that hydrates, corrects uneven skintone and restores the youthful glow that many of us spend a small fortune to maintain. It also contains Vitamins A and E, which are anti-aging and nourishing. This is a great product to transform your regular foundation into a tinted moisturizer. Just mix a dab of this into your foundation and presto change-o you have achieved that gorgeous sheer makeup look that is perfect for warmer weather!

Overall, Pixi’s Hello Rose! Set is probably the most fun I’ve had with makeup in a long while–everything was designed to play with. I think this would be great for you makeup mavens looking to streamline or for younger women just getting into color cosmetics. I seriously can’t believe you can get all three pieces for $22–I’ve regularly spent that much just on a lipgloss! I highly recommend you give this trio a try.

3 Things: Happy Easter

When I was a kid, I always loved Easter. I mean, you woke up, came downstairs and there was a basket FILLED WITH TOYS AND CANDY waiting for you. That supposedly a rabbit brought you! I mean, Santa is a reach, but a rabbit bringing children baskets of chocolate and jelly beans is really just insane. And you got to have CANDY FOR BREAKFAST! I mean, Cadbury eggs are still eggs, amirite?

Dinner was always ham, au gratin potatoes and English Peach Pie for dessert. As far as eating holidays go, Easter is pretty fricking amazing.

Now that I’m an adult, the hubby and I still do Easter baskets for each other because, why not? This year our oldest nephew is staying with us while he searches for an apartment and I’m totally going to get him an Easter basket because I want to see his face when he gets a basket filled with jelly beans and a dvd copy of “Night of the Lepus”. Which brings us to this week’s 3 Things…

1. Did you ever believe in the Easter Bunny? Maybe until I was 5. Then I had the thought that the wild rabbits in my yard ran on all fours, so there was no way any Easter bunny was going to be able to carry baskets of candy to so many children. He didn’t have elves or a sleigh or a workshop like Santa, so there was no freaking way. I gave it A LOT of thought.

2. What’s your favorite Easter candy? Sarris Candies Meltaway Eggs. Sarris is a candy brand that is sold in the Pittsburgh, PA area (where I’m from). Their meltaway eggs are basically massive truffles. You need a sharp knife to cut a tiny serving size off of them. One of those eggs would last me 2 weeks–long after everything else was gone, I’d still be working on my meltaway egg. The chocolate is smooth and the filling is ridiculous. They are amazing…and now I want one.

3. What’s your traditional Easter dinner? As mentioned earlier, we always do ham, au gratin potatoes, some kind of veggie and English peach pie (which is really a peach cobbler). I’ve had the same Easter dinner for my entire life. When I got married, I started buying potato rolls for the hubby so he could make mini sandwiches out of the leftovers (because I wasn’t going to make homemade rolls like his mom did), but that’s the only change ever made to the menu.

Happy Easter, weheartsters! Cut and paste the following into the comments and tell us these 3 Things:
1. Did you ever believe in the Easter Bunny?
2. What’s your favorite Easter candy?
3. What’s your traditional Easter dinner?

Pizzazz-Packing Eye Shadow Palettes Promise to Bewitch

Is there anything so lovely as a perfectly curated eye palette? The world is filled with palettes of half-usable shadows and half-wasted hues. I’ve had the best of luck with neutral palettes, but always long for a touch of pizzazz. So you know who does neutral plus pizzazz palettes phenomenally? MAC, of course! Let’s focus All Eyes on MAC.

A close look at In The Flesh X 15

We heart this received a Eye Shadow X 15 ($65), as well as Eye Shadow X 9 ($32) palette from their latest eye shadow launch Eyes on MAC. As you’d imagine, the number indicates the number of shadows in said palette. The collection offers superb range, from neutral shades (like Stef’s In The Flesh X 15 palette), to the bright, the cool, the smoky and the metallic (like my Solar Glow X 9 palette), all in a variety of finishes. Bye-bye boring texture; sayonara squandared shades. The palettes are a great way to find the finish you prefer while mixing with colors you need.

Solar Glow X 9

The finishes are key here, so let’s start with a little introduction to those.
MAC Eye Shadow Finish Guide

Frost — these have very shimmery finishes with super-small bits of mica to deliver a high shine with a smooth application.

Lustre — these have big chunks of mica (read:glitter). It’s a bit rough in application (though I find a wet brush helps).

Satin — the baby bear of the eye shadow world, just right! Smooth with lots of color and a more subtle sheen.

Matte — zero shine here, just lots of highly pigmented, blendable color.

Velvet — like its name implies, this is a super-duper smooth shadow with rich color and slight sheen.

Veluxe — matte, but better: buttery and more blendable.

Veluxe Pearl — frost, but better: buttery and more blendable.

There are two palettes in the X 15 collection, we got to take a look at In The Flesh x 15. Stef reports that this is her favorite eye shadow palette release in YEARS; a perfect mix of cool and warm neutrals that she’s reaching for all the time. Literally, ALL the time!

Swatches done by vertical rows (MAC color description is in parentheses).

Beaded – Frost, nude gold (Light Golden Beige)
Elemental – Matte, cool light nude (Cool Wheat Nude)
Naked Lights – Matte, medium taupe (Light Neutral Slate)

Glam Gold – Satin, peachy gold (Coppery Yellow Gold)
Nutrelle – Matte, apricot (Muted Apricot)
Cumulus – Frost, grey leaning taupe shimmer (Dirty Grey Charcoal)

Copperfield – Satin, peachy nude (Peachy Beige)
Rustique– Matte, light dirty plum (Cool Pinky Beige)
Cast Iron – Matte, blackened grey (Matte Charcoal)

Sandstone – Matte, milk chocolate (Cool Grey Beige)
Tempting – Lustre, deep shimmering brown (Rich Cocoa)
Black Factor – Matte, blackened dark chocolate (Dark Chocolate)

Luxury Cachet – Frost, cool brown shimmer(Cool Pewter)
Indiscretion – Lustre, brown meets mauve (Dirty Mauve)
Carbon – Matte, inky black (Black)

There are six palettes in the X 9 collection, we got to take a look at Solar Glow x 9 ($32).

Swatches done by vertical rows (MAC color description is in parentheses).

Moon Rock – Veluxe Pearl, golden white (Frosty Bright White)
Sugared – Lustre, icy pink with a purple shift, ALL glitter (Light Frosty Pink)
Cosmic – Frost, cool light grey (Taupe)

Copper Aura – Lustre, peach ice (Pastel Coral)
Quarry – Matte, dirty plum (Soft Muted Plum-Brown)
Soot – Velvet, blackened taupe (Cool Grey)

Blackberry – Matte, plummy medium brown (Muted Burgundy-Plum Brown)
Metalmauve – Frost, shimmery plum (Soft Lilac)
Lunar Cycle – We’re calling this a Satin despite it’s Frost listing, cool grey with a slight green cast (Frosty Muted Teal, which seems like an error)

Solar Glow X 9 palette is a delicious combination of pale, moonlit metallics and smoky grays and plums. The pans are small, but the more neutral colors (read: most used) tend to be Matte or Velvet or Veluxe Pearl, all of which pack a lot of pigment. The Lusters tend to be a lot more powdery, disintegrating more quickly in the pan, I won’t likely use these as much. The frosts here are really frosty, but used in conjunction with the darker mattes, perfection happens.

All the palettes seem to be well-balanced for real life. The bright palettes (like Red-Hot X 9) has less sparkle/more matte and velvet, because we all know that too much bright + too much sparkle = Endora from Bewitched. Most of the neutral, cool or smoky palettes have more shimmery finishes from which to choose. It’s nice having someone pick out “just enough” since I definitely have “too much/Endora” tendencies.

When it comes to eyes, MAC, we’re looking at YOU!

It’s here, the first big Shopbop sale event of 2017! And we’ve got the deets (and some Cali-centric suggestions).

Use code: EVENT2017 and get
20% off under $500 | 25% off over $500
(including full price and sale merchandise!)

The sale starts today and lasts through 11:59PM PST on Friday 4/14. Shopping for your dude? You have a bit more time: the Eastdane, the sale will last through 11:59PM PST on Sunday 4/16. Visit Shopbop to see their latest sale details.

Ok, on to our picks…

Are you familiar with Shopbop’s Lookbooks? It’s basically like having your own stylist. Wondering what the latest and greatest in fashion is? Look no further than their daily Lookbooks. Here you’ll find the newest from your favorite designers (like Alice + Olivia) and what’s trending NOW (like a spring break must-have list).

It was in one of these Lookbooks that I found Shopbop’s guide to mastering California style. And I have to say as an honorary California girl, they got it pretty spot on! Splashes of bright (just splashes), slouchy pieces layered over more form-fitting ones, and, of course, a great pair of shades.

This was my favorite look they curated. I love the mix of embroidery, denim and gold, and I could totally see myself wearing the whole ensemble for a day at the beach. Not going in the water, silly. Getting Poke, going to a gallery and ending up at a brewery!

Their picks are all pretty pricey, so I came up with some more budget-friendly alternatives:
Madewell Succulent Earrings ($28)
Levi’s Ex-Boyfriend Trucker Jacket ($90)
Quay Libre Sunglasses ($60)
Piper Embroidered Dress ($138)
Free People Under Wraps Sandals ($68)
Give them a click and see if you like my picks!

we heartsters – what will you be picking up at the spring 2017 Shopbop sale?

That and more in The Lipstick League, week of 4.4.17

Question of the Week: Quick! Name the last concealer that you purchased and tell us how it’s been working for you.

Answer: I picked up the NARS Soft Matte Complete Concealer ($30) on a recent Sephora spree. I don’t even need concealer right now, but I swatched it and fell in love! It’s got the most magical light feel to it. And, it actually works better with your fingers than a brush. You seem to have a bit more control with it that way. You just tap the smallest amount with your finger and it literally blurs imperfections like a real-life Photoshop tool. I am seriously impressed.

Here’s the latest from the League…

Blushing Noir – The unicorn trend is STRONG and if you’re feeling magical and maybe a little sassy, yet still want to be BUDGET FRIENDLY check out these amazing Unicorn Brush Sets on Amazon!

EauMG – I bought a sample of a perfume with oud and raspberries with the expectation that I’d write a (funny) snarky review. Well, I’ve been played! I ended up falling for a raspberry/oud that reminds me of frolicking in a magical, fantasy forest.

fanserviced-b – I was overwhelmed when acne first hit my skin. Here are the products that form the Anti-Acne starter pack I wish I’d had back then.

Gouldylox – Who doesn’t love a killer matte lipstick that actually helps dogs and cats have better lives? I know I do, even though one of the colors is NOT for me.

My Beauty Bunny – I’m trying out some natural goodies from RMS Beauty, One Over One, and Lily Lolo and letting you know what I think!

Nouveau Cheap – I struggled to find a place in my skincare regimen for the new St. Ives Coconut Oil Scrub. Here’s what happened.

Phyrra – Unicorn obsessed? I’ve got over 20 of the most magical pieces of Unicorn Makeup & Makeup Brushes you can get your hands on!

Prime Beauty – sent her undereye bags packing with Dermalogica Stress Positive Eye Lift AND she’s giving away one to you!

we heart this – discovered NINE new formulas from Herbal Essences (including one that smells more like a high end perfume than shampoo, it’s a must-have!)

Beautygeeks – needed a second date with a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer to know whether a little nozzle issue was going to be a deal-breaker.

(Wondering what the Lipstick League is? Find out here.)

Blushing Noir is Currently Craving: The Benefit Cosmetics Sunday My Prince Will Come Easy Weekender Makeup Kit. It has the GALifornia Blush that I’m DYING for, plus a bunch of other awesome little goodies in an adorable bag!

3 Things: Spring Cleaning

Spring has sprung and this girl is in the midst of her spring cleaning. (Boo!) While some people are enjoying spring break, the only thing breaking here is my psyche. Because if I have to wash one more window, I’m gonna lose it, y’all. Sincerely. And it’s going to be EPIC.

I will say, this is a more intensive spring cleaning than usual–my hubby and I are about to have a long-term house guest–our nephew is moving up to New England for work and is staying with us while he looks for more permanent housing. Our plan to slowly move our family from PA to NH is beginning to take shape…muwahahahaha….*twirls handlebar moustache* Which brings us to this week’s 3 Things…

1. How does your spring cleaning differ from your regular cleaning? For spring cleaning, I go hard core. I wipe down all furniture with dust wipes and furniture polish. Kitchen cabinets and fridge get cleaned out/wiped down. I wash those annoying dust ruffles that collect dust (and iron them), I switch out my shower liners, I dust the ceiling and walls. All light fixtures. I dust the blinds and wash all the windows (I HATE doing windows). And when I’m being really motivated, I take my drapes to be dry-cleaned (I’m not feeling super motivated this year).

2. Are you one of the lucky few to go on spring break? Where? No spring break this year, due to our house guest/prepping for that, but can I say that I can’t wait to hear about Stef’s spring break to Iceland! I love that if she hit a beach, it was in a parka. I bet she had THE BEST TIME EVER!

3. What is the biggest thing you’re excited about this spring? I’m excited for my hubby to have some of his family move up here. I’m excited to do stuff around the house. Been in this house for almost 6 years and didn’t really nest because we move so much. Since this is the longest we’ve been anywhere, I’m nesting now! And I’m super excited about being able to plan a road trip without worrying about getting caught in a blizzard.

Your turn, weheartsters! Cut and paste the following into the comments and tell us these 3 Things:

If ever there was ever a haircare line that deserved to be called iconic, it’s Herbal Essences. I can still picture the pretty label on my mom’s bottle of their original shampoo, back when they just had one product (the singularly named “herbal essence”). And who can forget their kind-of-naughty 1990’s “totally organic experience” commercials? If you’re an American woman, I guarantee that Herbal Essences looms large in your own beauty history. This is a line that could rest on its laurels and still be legendary.

But that’s not going to happen. Herbal Essences just launched their biggest undertaking since the original classic shampoo hit the market 45 years ago, and it’s massive. NINE new shampoo and conditioner duos (and a handful of companion products) that offer the “ultimate shower experience.”

I’d like to introduce you to NEW Herbal Essences with bio:renew

I bet you’re wondering, what is bio:renew? Just like the name implies, bio:renew is a combination of ingredients that blends technology with purity. bio:renew products are free of colorants, parabens and gluten, and full of natural ingredients designed to revive and, yes, renew hair. Antioxidants, aloe and sea kelp help the bio:renew formula deliver its signature silky shine.

The new heavenly-scented varieties include:

Argan Oil of Morocco – fizzy citrus, exotic spice and creamy vanilla. Shampoo, conditioner and oil-infused crème for silkiness and shine.

Coconut Milk – white floral bouquet blended with coconut and vanilla. Shampoo, conditioner and oil-infused crème for deep hydration.

Cucumber & Green Tea – green leaves, watery lily and clean amber. Shampoo, conditioner and dry shampoo for lightweight moisture.

Vitamin E & Cocoa Butter – black cherry, almond cream and spicy amber. Shampoo and conditioner help restore strength and softness. I tested this duo and loved it. The scent is warm and long-lasting, and the formula is creamy and moisturizing. Lots of rich lather! It was easy to comb my hair while it was wet, and it dried soft and silky. I had extra volume, too.

Passion Flower & Rice Milk – citrus, passion fruit and creamy orange blossom. Shampoo and conditioner for deep nourishment.

Arabica Coffee Fruit – crushed berries, caramel latte and patchouli. Shampoo and conditioner for added volume. Stef tried this duo and is mesmerized by the scent, which she describes as “more high end perfume than drugstore shampoo.” She’ll share more of her thoughts in the comments…

Golden Moringa Oil – juicy orange, white floral bouquet and coconut water. Shampoo and conditioner for sleek, glossy hair.

Rosemary & Herbs Naked Moisture – herbs, clean mint and sandalwood. Shampoo and conditioner for clean hydration. I got to sample this duo and was impressed by how gentle it was while cleaning like a clarifying shampoo. My hair was definitely clean, to the extent that I had to take my time combing it out (nothing coating the strands), but it dried shiny and smooth. The scent is invigorating but not overpowering.

White Grapefruit & Mosa Mint Naked Volume – fresh citrus, clean mint and velvet peach. Shampoo, conditioner and dry shampoo for extra body, volume and movement.

The options are enticing, and no matter which collection you choose, Herbal Essences with bio:renew promises to “bring your hair back to life” in 21 days. I’m so pleased with the two duos I tested, I can’t wait to try out at least a few of the others. And really, they’re such a bargain, I might just try them all.

It always amazes me when a person is able to take something terrible and create beauty from it. In the case of Violets Are Blue skincare, founder Cynthia Besteman did this literally. After a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2011, Besteman took her own experience and used it as a springboard for the creation of her natural, organic, truly soothing skincare line.

During treatment, Besteman started paying attention to the products she used and the way they were labeled. After she realized that “organic” or “natural” did not mean free of parabens, sulfates or other potentially cancer-causing chemicals, Besteman began crafting her own products.

Natural Beauty ProductsOrganic goodness, Violets Are Blue Facial Scrub

Violets Are Blue was officially launched in 2013. Besteman says it best: “We operate under the philosophy that skincare does not have to be complicated; in fact, keeping it simple is best.”

This philosophy extends to the product packaging. Even though sunlight makes flowers grow, it also causes essential oils and herbal extracts (and products containing them) to decay. The Miron Violet glass used for the packaging blocks the spectrum of damaging light to assure long-lasting products without use of scary chemical preservatives. The bottles are lovely and reusable, too!

I sampled a selection of Violets Are Blue’s Signature Line…

Facial Cleanser ($35 for 30ml) – Just 2-3 drops of this creamy wash gently cleanses the face. The blend of White Tea, Carrot Seed and Evening Primrose is extremely gentle and smells lightly floral. Appropriate for all skin types, but very dry skin would benefit the most from its non-foaming formula.

Facial Serum ($48 for 20ml) – This serum blends Evening Primrose, Argan, Rosehip Oil, Jojoba, and other essential oils like Carrot Seed and Lavender into a very potent, concentrated formula. Just a few small drops are enough to treat face and neck. The scent is herbal.

Facial Scrub ($36 for 3oz) – Unlike the super-gentle cleanser and serum, the scrub is the muscle of the Signature Line! A blend of Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Almonds, Calendula, and Oatmeal packs a lot of exfoliating power. If your face is too sensitive for all this abrasion, the Facial Scrub would be great as a body exfoliator. Recommended for use once or twice a week.

Body Cream ($48 for 6oz) – I saved the best for last. Lavender is way down on the ingredient list of this rich, moisturizing butter, but the scent is undeniable. For this reason, I’ve been using the cream on my hands and elbows before bed, when the calming scent helps me fall asleep.

Designed to treat inflammation, stretch marks and cracked skin, the cream contains moisturizing butters like Shea and Kokum, and nourishing oils like Sweet Almond and Argan. I’m so happy to report that a little goes a long way.

Safe for the body, safe for the environment, and soothing for the soul, Violets Are Blue Skincare is proof that “simple” is a beautiful concept.

Question of the Week: When was the last time you made a dramatic change to your hair (not just a trim or root touch-up)? Tell us what you did!

Answer: I’ve got a sad truth for you. The older you get, the less adventurous you get with your haircuts. There are exceptions, I’ve seen some older women rocking cool hair. But me? I haven’t made a wild hair decision in YEARS. Boo, I know…

Here’s what was up with the League last week…

Beauty Junkies Unite – If you don’t already know how GORGEOUS Benefit’s new box of blush is, you’re going to want to check out my review of their latest GALifornia blush!

Clumps of Mascara – I love so much about Shea Moisture Cosmetics and I’ve been a fan of their skincare and haircare lines even more. But as much love as I have for them, there are a few things they can work on.

EauMG – In celebration of spring, I’ve spent the week reviewing “Purple Flower” perfumes: lilacs, hyacinths, violets and more!

fanserviced-b – The reason you’re going to buy the Dr.Jart+ Firm Lover Rubber Mask is because Dr.Jart+ thought it would be cool to put a rubber-clad baby dom on the packaging. The reason you’re only going to try it once is because it’s expensive and sucks.

Gouldylox – I spent last weekend at America’s Beauty Show in Chicago and one thing was really clear. This trend is so popular, it’s about to go from everything to fetch.

My Beauty Bunny – Last weekend I had a unicorn hair makeover at Spoke and Weal, an Aveda salon. Check out my post for all the details on my results and experience!

Nouveau Cheap – Attention K-Beauty fans! Did you hear that Korean beauty is coming to CVS? Start saving those Extra Care Bucks! Here’s everything you need to know.

Phyrra – Looking for a new foundation? I swatched 49 of the Best Foundations for Fair and Pale Skin. Find a new favorite!

we heart this – Who’s the brand that brings you all the high end beauty at drugstore prices? ELF! (You’re damn right.) Check out this pigmented blush palette that’s only $6.

Beauty Junkies Unite is Currently Craving: I’m dying to get my hands on a few products from this new skincare line I found at Nordstrom! Youth To The People makes a really interesting facial cleanser; Kale + Green Tea Spinach Age Prevention Cleanser. I need it in my life!
