tarte Smooth Operator and Provocateur review

March 15th, 2010 in beauty & fashion, green monday, reviews by Christy Kane

photo: we heart this

When Maureen Kelly founder of tarte cosmetics started her business and cosmetic line (from her tiny apartment) in 1999 she was doing all of us a favor! Producing a line not only created with the best ingredients, but also packaged in total finery. Seriously, think about Lights, Camera, Lashes!mascara or their trademark pseudo snakeskin; what could be better! The wht review team seems to agree tarte is a top quality, colorful line as evidenced by our past reviews of the eyeQuatic Summer Essentials Set and the Holiday 2009 Collection.

But it’s not all striking packages and shimmery makeup at tarte; did you know that tarte is also an eco-conscious company worthy of a Green Monday review? Maureen launched tarte when she “became frustrated when (she) couldn’t find healthy, nourishing cosmetics. Everything…was full of unhealthy, synthetic formulas.” To make matters worse, when Maureen located a green makeup line, the packaging was so blah, she didn’t want to buy it, “let alone take it out of my purse in public!”

You will have no such problems with any offering from tarte. All products are not only “98% free of parabens, petro-chemicals, phthalates, sulfates and synthetic fragrances,” they are packaged in chic, runway-inspired cases and compacts. To make things even better, the packaging components are made from recyclable or post-consumer recycled material and can often be re-used to help reduce environmental waste.

That reality is what made trying tarte’s Smooth Operator tinted moisturizer even more exciting for me. It is a subtly tinted moisturizer that packs a whopping spf 20 to protect your skin and is free of parabens, mineral oil, petrolatum, and other yucky stuff. Instead this fabulous tinted moisturizer contains chamomile extract (a wonder for facial skin with its anti-inflammatory effects), vitamins A, C, and E (to protect from free radicals while reducing signs of aging) as well as orange, lemon, Ginseng root…. are you getting all of this? Suffice to say, your skin will thank you for using this makeup.

As for its coverage, it is subtle; giving skin a sheer glow. As someone who never wears foundation that works for me. For some, one layer will suffice, but the formula is easily layered for heavier coverage if needed (mimicking the look, but not the feel of your typical foundation). It goes on smooth, blends incredibly well, and stays put throughout the day.

Offered it in a wide array of colors, you’re sure to find your match. Tarte has recently updated their color selection and the packaging of Smooth Operator, but the natural formula remains. And you really only need a tiny amount to cover your entire face. My tube has lasted a good six weeks and I think I can get a couple more out of it before I need a new one.

If you need more coverage, or prefer a powder, look no further than tarte’s Provocateur Pressed Mineral Powder with spf 8. Also free from all the nasty chemicals we do not want on our faces, this powder offers full coverage that will leave your skin velvety smooth. The fine powder is chock full of healthy, vitamin rich ingredients, and has been known to be a favorite of many a fine lady, including none other than Miss Carrie Underwood! How smooth does her skin look.. bet she’s rocking tarte!

Join me in the comments where I’ll be adding my 5 star love. As always, that’s where you will find the we heart this review team’s thoughts and experiences on Smooth Operator and Provocateur Pressed Mineral Powder. And hey, wht community, have you tried either? What do you think?

Korres Wild Rose Moisturizer review

February 14th, 2010 in beauty & fashion, green monday, reviews by Christy Kane

Dry skin beware! There is a hydrating Green Monday worthy remedy that smells of roses and is bound to knock your dry skin out. I recently went to my local Sephora with one thing on my mind, a good facial moisturizer. I have tried so many, and over the winter months my face seemed unquenchable. I explained my dilemma and the head of the skin care department led me directly to Korres.

Having tried a couple Korres samples, I was anxious to hear more about the brand. This eco-conscious company was founded in 1996 from Greece’s oldest homeopathic pharmacy and today promises “advanced natural formulations that deliver maximum results.” Using active natural extracts for superior performance, these formulas are clinically proven to benefit skin while avoiding harmful and synthetic compounds.

She went on to tell me that as far as dry, sensitive skin there wasn’t a higher recommended product then the Korres Wild Rose 24-Hour Moisturizer with SPF 6. So of course, I had to buy it immediately!

Well, one month later I am seeing all the benefits from this gem in a jar. The Wild Rose Moisturizer is one of Korres best sellers, and it’s easy to see why. With ingredients like vitamins C and E, wild rose oil, grape seed extract and olive oil; it’s practically a vitamin supplement for your face!

That’s not to mention all the things that are not in this soothing face cream. The Wild Rose Moisturizer, like all Korres products, is free of parabens, sulphates, propylene glycol, ethanolamines, phalates, genetically modified organisms, phalates and triclosan. Plus, Korres makes a conscious effort to reduce waste on all levels. Their packaging is made with recycled materials and designed with the minimum amount of materials as possible. In addition to all of their containers being recyclable as well.

Back to the most important part, at least as far as my dry skin was concerned, the moisturizer! Right away my skin felt more quenched than it had felt in months. My semi-sensitive skin had no negative reactions, zero redness or itchiness, and feels calm and supple.

Now that I have been using the Wild Rose Moisturizer for over a month the results are evident. Over time it has healed my dry skin, lightened my hyper pigmentation spots and even diminished my fine lines. I’ve also read that this works wonders on under eye circles and dark shadows. Throw into the mix that it also smells like a fresh bouquet of rosey goodness on your face and let’s face it; if you have dry skin – you need this!

Show your skin some love and try this out. If you’re like me, your face will show its thanks over time with a happy, hydrated glow. For $35.00 this well worth it’s cost.

Ladies, have you ever tried Korres? What products do you LOVE?

Get it at Sephora!

Bonus: Sample a handful of products from this line with the Korres Wild Rose Triple Benefits Collection, a $130 value (includes the Wild Rose Moisturizer, Mask, Serum and an Imperfection Targeting Pen) on sale for at Sephora $54 – plus it ships for FREE!

HIRSANA Golden Millet Oil Capsules review

December 4th, 2009 in beauty & fashion, reviews by Christy Kane

hirsana “Strengthen your hair, skin and nails.” Sounds good to me! Most of the products in my possession all claim to do at least one of these things. I have an arsenal of lotions to stay hydrated, more conditioners than I should admit to, and as far as nails, I have a reasonable amount of strengthening creams and polishes. So am I still on the quest for better hair, skin, and nails even with all these products? Of course I am! I don’t know what gene it is that makes me want to try more, but I do. For years I’ve known that to have healthy hair, skin and nails, you really need to look at what your eating and drinking.

Enter supplements.

I have been an avid believer in the benefits of supplements my whole life. You start to get sick, you power up on Vitamin C, Zinc and healthy dose of Elderberry syrup and you are on the road to recovery. So when wht sent me HIRSANA Golden Millet Oil Capsules, which promise “strong hair, radiant skin and firm nails”, I was eager to give them a shot.

If you’re unfamiliar with Millet, it’s a gluten free grain. You can cook it up as an alternative to rice or pasta. It’s really tasty, with a mild yet sweet-nutty flavor. Nutritionally, it packs a nice wallop of fiber, B vitamins, iron, magnesium, phosphorous, and potassium to name a few. So you can imagine a concentrated version of the finest form of millet would be really good for you. That’s where HIRSANA does all the work for you. These daily supplements have 100% of Vitamins E, B6, Thiamine, Riboflavin, and Biotin, as well as 50% of your daily Zinc.

Hirsana-beauty-vitaminsWhat really makes these supplements stand out though is the main ingredient, which is 200mg of pure golden millet oil. Known to strengthen and hydrate your hair and skin, and give you nails that are seriously unbreakable!

I tried the regiment for two straight weeks and I have to say my nails are seriously stronger. My skin and hair honestly seem about the same, but I think you really need to give these at least a month to see the proper results. So I plan on ordering the bigger box and giving them a go. Based on my nails, I can tell that with consistent use my hair and skin will thank me!

I will say that if you try them, definitely take them with food. As with most vitamins and supplements they can cause a bit of an upset stomach if taken on their own. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose, which is two tablets. In fact, I bet you could take just one and still see the benefits. And of course, if your pregnant or have any health issues at all I would ask your doctor before trying them just to be on the safe side.

All in all, I personally give them four stars after a two-week trial. I bet if I had taken them for a month I would say five stars (once I re-order I will report back!) In my opinion, these are definitely worth the money and a good addition to a healthy routine. If you’re looking to help your self from the inside out, give them a shot. ($36 for a 15 day supply)

Has anyone else tried these golden beauty tickets! What did you think?

Sock Dreams - sponsor feature

October 27th, 2009 in beauty & fashion by Christy Kane

sockdreamsI have a couple addictions I will readily admit to, and refuse to feel guilty about. One is perfume oils, especially BPAL, and my second addiction is socks.

I still remember the happy day in 2004 when my band was on tour with the amazing Rasputina. I saw a girl wearing stockings with vertical stripes (like the ones shown above right) and chased her down to find out where she had got them. She told me all about Sock Dreams, the web-store for sock addicts like myself. As soon as I could, I ordered the stockings along with O’Chevrons from their very own line – Dream Stockings. Amazingly comfortable, made in the USA and really long lasting socks. To date, I’ve collected over a dozen pairs of Dream Stockings and can attest to the fact that they last and last.

Also, as a knee-high obsessed gal, I was always on a quest for socks that stayed up. These ALWAYS do! But in case you have some fancy socks that never seem to stay up, Sock Dreams has a whole section of adorable Sock Garters.

They offer socks and stockings from all over the world. Plus, when you place an order they seem to ship instantly. I’m always impressed with the timely manner the socks arrive.

Whether your looking for something comfy, stylish, adorable or sexy, Sock Dreams is your one stop shop! From ankle socks, to knee highs, thigh highs and tights. They even have a whole section of precious socks for kids and babies.

I was so excited when Niqkita, the founder of Sock Dreams agreed to answer some questions for wht. Read on to learn more about all there is to love about Sock Dreams. And make sure to peruse their site, you are bound to find socks that will look amazing, keep you warm and make your toes extra happy!

wht: What year did Sock Dreams start, and what fueled the fire to start it?
Niqkita: In 1999 I had an overhelming desire to do something different, start a new life/career. In 2000 I started selling socks online.

Have you always had a love of socks and stockings?
Yes, every since I was little my feet were always cold, my mom and I would seek out the best places to find neat socks.

You carry so many amazing lines, including your own. What led you to start your own line?
I started our own line because I wasn’t finding what I wanted available through suppliers; long comfy socks, Mmmm!

Do you have a favorite sock on your site?
I have a lot of favorites, but my very favorite is our O Dreamy, with the longer Super Dreamy a close second.

Are some of your socks limited edition? (that just makes us want them more ~wht
Yeah, we definitely get a fair amount of limited editions. Sometimes we know when we get it, sometimes we don’t know till we can’t get more.

Your sock garters are adorable, are those big sellers?
I think sock garters are kind of a cult favorite, people either get it or they don’t and those that do love them!

If you could only have three pairs of socks which ones would they be?
Three pairs? That a tough one…
1. Dream Stockings, O Dreamy
2. ToeToe walker, Toesocks
3. Dream Stockings, Diamond Ribs

I have total sock obsession and am officially a sock hoarder. You?
I try not to hoard socks, but it does happen. I go through my many sock shelves and boxes and thin out the ones I’ve not worn yet and give them away to friends and family.

Whats the best way to extend the life of a pair of socks or stockings that you can’t imagine life without?
I can’t imagine life without a garment bag, I have two actually. Don’t always use them, but when washing delicate socks/stockings you can get away with not hand washing a lot of stuff.

Now for the fun! No wht interview is complete without a reach in our potluck question vault…

Me in a nutshell: I am an extraverted introvert with a lot of socks and a big camera.

I heart: rainy days and warm toes.

What book do you think everyone should read? I think everyone should read Kitchen Confidential because if you eat out at all you should know what really goes-on on the other side, both for your own safety and for the sanity of food service workers everywhere who work so hard to feed people. Plus it is an entertaining read.

You can have front row concert tickets to see anyone, who do you choose? I would love to see a duet with Tori Amos & Maynard James Keenan.

What’s your sign and do you fit the traits of it? I’m a triple Libra (sun, moon and rising house are all in Libra, according to my mom) and I totally do fit the traits. Always trying to see both sides and be fair. I can be horribly indecisive, but have learned to go with my gut instinct and it usually works for me.

What are 3 things you can’t live without? Love, warm toes & my camera.

What are you three make up must haves? My makeup must haves these days are Urban Decay primer potion for eyes in sin for a little sparkle, along with their 24/7 eyeliners & big fatty mascara. I don’t know how I lived without mascara for so many years.

Tell us some your guilty pleasures… My favorite guilty pleasure is Affogatto in the afternoon; gelato & espresso in a bowl; divine!

Thanks so much for your time Niqkita, and your awesome store! Now people, go buy socks…

Interview with Beth, founder of BPAL

October 21st, 2009 in beauty & fashion by Christy Kane

BethThe art of perfumery, like all art forms, has it’s pioneers and masters. I think it’s safe to say that Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab creations are among the truest works of art in the perfume world. They create perfume oils based upon everything from famous literature and works of art, to people, amimals or locations. But no matter what the scent, their gorgeous fragrances evoke a feeling. Whatever your emotion, BPAL has a scent to perfectly match the mood. They delve into every range of human feeling and create accordingly.

Each BPAL scent collection is based on a theme. And it’s as varied as you’d ever hope to imagine for a fragrance site! For example, Mad Tea Party collection takes it’s cue from none other than Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. Ars Amatoria is based on the Art of Love (home to their most popular oil, Snake Oil, a blend of exotic Indonesian oils sugared with vanilla. How good does that sound?) For those of us who love to travel, or just love to dream about it, Wanderlust has an oil for every destination. Including one dear to my heart – New Orleans – a combo of sweet honeysuckle and jasmine with a hint of lemon and spice.

I’ve been lucky enough to become friends with the Foundress of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, Beth Moriarty Barrial, and let me tell you, she is as sweet as her oils are amazing. Read on to get to know this amazingly prolific and talented perfume queen (and check out her badass self in the pic of her and her hubby at their pirate-themed wedding!)

Christy for wht: How long has Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab been in operation, and how many scents did you start with?
Beth: You’re asking a new mom to remember things! I have mom brain! This seems like so long ago. BPAL has been in its current iteration since 2002, Black Phoenix since 1999, and I’ve been making smellies for people since about 1992. If I recall correctly, there were seven scents that I first sold online: Snake Oil, Anathema, Debauchery, Twilight, Penitence, Forbidden Fruit, and Hunger. Some of the other scents from the first years were Pulse Points, Vixen, Satyr, Cabaret, Sacred Whore of Babylon, Banshee, Feu Follet, and Chimera.

Scent is such a powerful thing. It’s amazing how a certain smell can take you back in time. Certain BPAL oils have taken me on journeys to places I’ve been, and some places I hope to go! You have such a gift for creating some seriously thought provoking scents. Did you always have a love for the olfactory system?
Always, as long as I can remember. I’m fascinated by the effect scent has on emotions, and especially the idea of Proustian Memory. Scent is so primal, and yet is so under appreciated.

Your ability to create a specific scent for literary characters, phrases and stories is uncanny. For example, the Alice collection. Every oil in that collection conjures up images of Wonderland when you smell them, it’s really amazing. How do you come up with the combinations? Do they come to you complete or do you test things out until you feel they represent the character or piece of literature?
Thank you, Christy! Its hard to answer this question, because the process for every scent is unique. Sometimes a scent comes to me whole – Frumious Bandersnatch (Bandersnatch musk, redolent of spicy carnations, wild plums and chrysanthemum) came to me in a dream, corny as that sounds – and sometimes it takes a huge amount of experimentation to get a scent right. The whole of the (still pending) Alchemists Local 93 series is a good example of the latter. It has taken me over six years to get the scents in that series the way I want them.

Sometimes we’ll get a scent to where we want it, and then we’ll run into a component issue that will force us to have to shelve it or come up with a new angle on the concept.

When we work with artists and authors on a scent, the process is completely different. While we usually begin with our own impressions of the concept, their input is paramount, and we endeavor to stay true to the artist’s vision and what they feel their creation should smell like. Working with others helps me to stay flexible creatively, and inspires me to go in new directions.

Do you have a favorite?
This is such a hard question to answer! I truly love everything we do, even if a scent isn’t something I would wear myself. I love the independent scents we create, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have collaborated with all the other creative minds that we’ve been able to work with.

If I had to pick favorites, though, it would be Snake Oil, which I created for myself decades ago, Dorian (a Victorian fougere with three pale musks and dark, sugared vanilla tea) which I created for my husband, and all the scents that I’ve made for my daughter, Lilith. The Lil scents are little markers in the timeline of my life with her, and they mean the world to me.

BPAL logoDo you come up with scents daily?
Beth: Sometimes yes, sometimes no! It depends on my mindset at any given time. I work on scents in some capacity almost every day. Lord, even in my sleep.

Stef and myself have been obsessed with many of your LE scents. So we have to ask and make a plea…Will Monsterbait ever be resurrected?
We’ve been working on a new Monsterbait series for a few years. Hopefully, it’ll be ready soon!

Before BPAL, did you work in the aromatherapy or perfume world?
I apprenticed in the industry for ages, but it was out of a love of the creative process and because of the joy that perfume brings me. Initially, I had no intention of selling my creations. It just sort of happened, and I’m glad that it did. There are few things in this world as gratifying about being able to share what you love with others.

Do you find there is an audience for every scent? And is there a most popular collection?
I think there has been an audience for every scent except for Gore Shock. I think maybe I went a little too true to the concept with that one!

Our most popular collection is probably Ars Amatoria. People love love. And sex!

The BPAL forum is such a handy way to read reviews and try to decide what scents to buy. Has the forum been around since the beginning, or did it come soon after?
The BPAL forum is an independent entity that came about in 2004, and is a labor of love on the part of the administrators and moderators that take care of it. I don’t have the words for how much the work, love, sweat, and tears that they put into the forum means to me. I think the most amazing thing about bpal.org is the sense of family there. Newcomers and old school members alike can share their personal triumphs and sorrows with each other in an open, warm, and caring atmosphere. A haven like that is so rare in this world, especially on the internet.

I’ve found lifelong friends amongst our customers thanks to bpal.org. My life would be a much greyer place without it.

Has motherhood inspired some new scent combinations?
Beth: Lord knows I came up with some crazy shit when I was pregnant! See Irrelevant and Disturbing Surreal Crawdad Dream. (This was a LE, forum only scent, described as: An irrelevant, disturbing, and surreal scent: red currant, green tea, red musk, Hawaiian ginger, benzoin, vanilla, coriander, squash blossom, and blueberry.)

All of the Lilith scents that we’ve made since her birth are like a living, breathing scrapbook of our life. I don’t know if motherhood has affected the way I create oils, but it has expanded the way I perceived the act of perfumery, if that makes sense. I can create markers of moments in my life with my daughter in the most amazing ways.

Can you give us a sneak peak of collections in the works or upcoming releases?
Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere scents are coming out soon, and we’re working with Jill Thompson on a Scary Godmother series, and with the guys at Boom! Studios on scents representing their titles. I can’t tell you how excited I am about these new scents!

What are your favorite smells in everyday life?
My baby’s hair and my husband’s skin. Honeysuckle and jasmine on a summer night. The ocean, even during red tide. Puppy feet. Squished grass. Old books. The ozone smell after lightning strikes.

And no wht interview is complete without a reach in our potluck question vault…

I heart: making things smell, arguing about politics, reading, mechanical things, strange smells, bright colors, weird tchotchkies, gambling, Delta blues, 70’s glam, funeral jazz, fin de siècle era everything, Weimar cabaret, old watch parts, outsider art, toys, and dolls. I really could go on answering this for ages; I heart a ton of shit!

I’m a do-gooder because I…try to make sure I do at least one thing every day that makes someone happy.

What book do you think everyone should read? Can I pick more than one? Foucault’s Pendulum by Umberto Eco, American Gods by Neil Gaiman, and Man and His Gods by Homer Smith.

You can have front row concert tickets to see anyone, who do you choose? Leonard Cohen.

If I were an 80’s movie/tv/music star, I’d be: Ed Asner as Lou Grant! Oh wait, that’s 70’s…

What’s your sign and do you fit the traits of it? Pisces, and much to my chagrin, yeah…I probably do.

What are 3 things you can’t live without? My blankie, Sugar Free Red Bull, and lip gloss.

What’s the one thing always in your bag? Lately? A pacifier and wipes!

What characteristic do you admire most in a person? Which one do you despise? Admire: integrity. Despise: bullshitters.

What are you three make up must haves? Laura Mercier tinted foundation, my Shu Uemura eyelash curler, and cheap Maybelline mascara.

If you had a spare $500, what would you do with it? Blow it on toys. Toys for the baby, toys for the husband, toys for my brother, toys for me. I’m a sucker for toys.

Tell us some your guilty pleasures… World of Warcraft. Shoes. And lord…True Blood. I am awash with shame every time I watch it, but I’m there every week.

Thank you to Beth for her time and for the fabulous interview ~wht. And be sure to check back tomorrow for our “understanding BPAL guide” and a review of the oils!

The perfect red lipstick, courtesy of Julie Hewett

August 14th, 2009 in reviews by Christy Kane

Julie Hewett noirNo Mad Men week would be complete without a post about red lipstick, the quintessential piece to a retro look. Lucky for us, we received Julie Hewett’s Noir collection just in time…

“I love your lipstick, it’s the perfect red!” Why thank you, it’s Julie Hewett. If you look closely at her web site, you will discover that the perfect red is different for everyone. She’s made it her mission to help you, with a handy tool to direct you to yours. And believe me she knows! When it comes to red lips, Julie Hewett has done a masterful job at bringing back glam to one and all. Liv Tyler, Nicole Kidman or Anjelica Houston are just a few of her regulars. Their red lips often conjure up the visions of old Hollywood, when glamour was at one of its most fabulous peeks.

Not only are Julie’s Reds gorgeous on, they are gorgeous in the tube! They come in sleek gold art deco tubes and when you reach for them you may feel like you swiped them right off of Bette Davis’s makeup table. When I recently put Sin Noir on while looking in the car mirror, I didn’t see myself in the car at all. The elegant gold tube had me envision myself in front of a huge makeup table surrounded by glowing circular bulbs. I heard the hum of Cab Calloway on the victrola in my brain. This is where my imagination went, strictly based on the fabulous aesthetic of Julie Hewett lipstick. I may have been heading to the grocery store, but that didn’t stop me from feeding the need to have a glamorous day.

Grandma BerthaMy passion for red lipstick is inherited. My grandmother wore it every day. She lived during those glamorous days when Hollywood stars would wear white gloves, have red lips and flawless updo’s. She could have given any number of those ladies a run for their money in the fabulous department, and it all started with her red lips. I still have one of her old lipsticks and keep it as a treasure. It’s called “Flame Red” and it’s in a very similar delicate gold tube. When I got my first Julie Hewett lipstick, I thought how much my Grandma would have been in love with her reds, especially Belle Noir!

I was anxious to try one of her six original noir lipsticks, all “double pigmented with the essence of rosebud and camellia oils.” My shade, Sin Noir, applied as-is is the perfect dramatic wine red on my pale completion. As she hints on her site, a mere blotting of this color is a perfect stain. But whether you apply it as a stain or as a full color, expect it to stay put. This is another bonus of her reds. The staying power is every bit as powerful as the colors are stunning.

Here are the members of the original Noir collection:

Rouge Noir – Ultra Glam Classic Movie Star Red
Sin Noir – Divine Deep Wine Red
Coco Noir – Sophisticated Brick Red
Belle Noir – The Perfect Coral Red
Femme Noir – Lush Scarlet Blue Red
Nude Noir – Classy Nude Invisible Red

Ladies, are you all as in love as I am?! Which Noir did you try?

We heart Darla Teagarden

June 23rd, 2009 in potluck by Christy Kane

An interview with the lovely and talented artist, Darla Teagarden.

I love finding artists that make me giddy with delight. Artists who’s craftsmanship and eye for detail leave my mind swimming with inspiration, who send me on daydream vacations to their worlds. Some of my favorite artists, I am very lucky to say, are also my friends. One in particular who wows me constantly, is my friend Darla Teagarden.

A former pin-up model, hair and make-up stylist with a flair for the timeless, you notice at first glance, Darla has a definitive eye for detail. When we met on a creepy craft web-site in cyberland a few years back, I had no idea that I would one day find myself as a lucky participant in her world. One minute, happily floating through the air, with the aid of rabbits, and then singing birds flying out of my mouth while adorning a brooch of the church tower where I would dwell in the world of Darla Teagarden (image at the bottom of the post). Our first face to face was for our photo-shoot, and it was the most magical first play date I’ve had since I was 3! One of theses images (shown below) was recent published in Austin’s Rare Magazine, where Darla was voted 2009’s best photographer in Austin.

Being a doll maker and photographer, my heart goes wild for gorgeous sets and handsome photos. So you can imagine how my heart danced when I first saw her photographs. Darla builds sets and photographs various subjects who then become part of these worlds she makes from scratch. I’m not talking just a pretty backdrop and a fancy array of flowers. Her world is bursting with life and tales. Darla builds giant birds nests, mermaid tails and cuts out individual moths, butterflies, bunnies and bees to set the mood in her breathtaking photos.

Keep in mind, she only started this new venture in 2007 and has already created a body of work that rivals some who have been at it for over a dozen years. When wht agreed to feature her, I jumped at the chance to interview my inspiring friend.

Christy for wht: So, did you really just pick up photography in 2007? That amazes me; you have a real gift you know!
Darla: It chose me in a way. It began when I wanted to create a typical darla-ish scenario with my son. I dragged over my kid, wig, costumes etc. and paid a local to shoot it. After realizing the cost, and more, the future cost of doing what was in my head (not to mention the credit for my concepts), I stepped back. I thought, this is just like all the nerdy theatre, window dressing and mixed media I’ve done over the years, just add camera! So without further ado, with many more images I longed to realize, I picked up my Cool Pix and began. I started with an Octopus girl prop body and a full mount deer in my living room.

No formal training right, you just happen to have mad skills?
No photographic training. Unless you consider periodic modeling, training. Which, of course, does have its insights at least on a surface level. I have little knowledge about cameras or equipment, but I’m learning. Trial and error is the most readily available teacher for me.

On average how long does a set take for you to create?
I haven’t yet decided to have an assistant, so by the time I gather supplies and install, it can run at least two weeks. Shooting is about 3 hours, aside from hair and make-up. 90% is prep and that includes staring off into space thinking about it.

What is your most memorable shoot to date?
Most memorable? Hmm….The Bird Nest Girl & Octopus Duchess (both at the top of the post) because I understood how happy realizing an image in this way made me. Lady Teatherheart, the skeleton face girl with hearts (shown below) because it was the first time I shot something that appeared in person exactly as it did in my head. And maybe, the one with you too, Christy, because you were a complete joy to work with! I can’t choose!

Your Lover’s Eyes Dolce Masquerade Gown makes my heart sing. How long did that take for you to make that entire thing from cupcake doilies? It makes me want to roll in a field of poppies, I love it! (shown above)
The dress is made of pastry doilies and paper eyes, plus a meshy liner, sequins and rhinestones. It took about three weeks of vigilance, cutting out circle after circle. It reminds me a bit of honeycomb and It sounds like a hill of autumn leaves!

Do you know the silent films of Georges Méliès? He’s a huge inspiration of mine, his sets were mind-blowing. Is he one of your inspirations?
I know him, of course! Who couldn’t love a trip to the moon! But he isn’t directly an influence, no. My influence is primarily stage theatre, but pared way down to little visual poems more in tune with Alfred Cheney Johnston jazz era portraits, only more POP-ish, darker perhaps. I used to make cutouts and piece together costumes for productions. I studied dance for years too. Also, I made it my job to dress windows in places I had worked in NYC in the same style. It’s a bit of a tic I guess. Even though we aren’t visually related really, Tony Duquette and Bob Fosse live in my brain. In short ballet, opera, cabaret.

What inspires you most…I’m sorry, I hate these kinds of questions when I get them as I can have up to 150 answers depending on the day, but what as of now, June 2009, is really inspiring you?
Right now I’m still in awe of the young Pop Surrealists. C.C. Askew, Liz Mcgrath and sculptress, Jessica Joslin to name a few. Some people who’s work began in the fields of sculpture, animation and film. I really feel at home in their imagery. Mostly, classic themes with modern narrative.

In your Le Salon de La Sirene (The Mermaid’s Lounge, shown above) I can’t believe that’s you with a timer! I read that you were inspired by the paintings of Colette Calascione, Did she see and love your siren?
There are several of these portraits, the mermaid being one. As you can imagine it took endless tries to get it right, long shots and cropping. I rushed like mad to dive behind props, and in that case, grab teacups. I broke a teacup and a vintage teapot that didn’t make it into the shot. I had to reposition a top heavy, lop sided, headpiece over and over. No clue if the great Colette Calascione saw it! I’d feel like a dork asking her so I’ll probably never ask.

The tech geek in me has to know, what camera do you use? And do you have any favorite photographers?
I use a Pentax K 10 D mostly and a Nikon Cool Pix. My favorite photographers are industry classic standards like Helmut Newton, Diane Arbus and Sally Mann. But I absolutely love and worship conceptual photographer Maleonn and Maggie Taylor. I very much like Austin Young’s portraiture too.

I know we both have a love of New Orleans. Any NOLA inspiration in your pix?
People say they see it. It’s not intentional if it’s there, but I can say it most certainly there since New Orleans has made a large impact on me in every sense. New Orleans has a beautiful rot-bitter, gummy-sweet, aching secrecy like no other place. I’m sure it’s always present somewhere.

Any book plans? I know tons of people who would snatch up one in a second! Or are you planning on selling prints on-line? Basically how can wht people hang your gorgeousness in their homes?
This is a weird thing for me I must admit. I’m in the mode of producing and learning, so pimping myself has proved difficult. But, I’m in a place now where I’m on my way to having a place to sell official prints. I have a much longer road before I commit images to a book, but when that happens, an angel will get her wings. Ha!

(Great news, that angel did get her wings! Darla is taking orders for prints. See the bottom of the post for contact info.)

Did I miss anything?
Being a parent is a major influence. In fact (I’ve never said this to anyone for some reason.) The main reason I’m creating these images or any other image for that matter is, my son (shown above, what a cutie!). It’s an illustrated love letter to him for when I’m old or dead. I want him to be able to see this part of his mother. A keepsake to show, to muse over, to frame, to say “she made that for me”. Even if I end up a dour cat lady, there’s this chapter-Mom indulging in dreamy drag, being happy.

And no wht interview is complete without a reach in our potluck question vault…
If you had a spare $500, what would you do with it?
I’m obsessed with Masonic Regalia! I would buy a fine piece, probably a gorgeous banner.

What’s your porn name? (childhood pet and the street you grew up on)
Peaches Killdeer. I think it fits and I like the visual!

What are 3 things you can’t live without?
1. My meds. As of now, I need them to chop my way through the maze of life’s typical annoyances and trauma that has caught up to me. (I’m an over sensitive cry baby) It’s a chemical “chin up!” A veritable hot fudge sundae for the synapses!
2. Craft stores. Who doesn’t love that at any moment (between 9-6 pm) you can mill around wads of fabric, wooden shapes, cutting tools, fake hair, and static orchards of brightly dyed flowers?
3. My dogs. They are the silliest and sweetest friends. The only agenda there consists of ass scratches and the promise of all things digestible.

What characteristic do you admire most in a person? Which one do you despise?
I love humility in genius people. It somehow gives me hope in humanity. It shows real perspective. I hate denial based personalities! I despise people who say they hate people who they most represent. I admire (and like) someone who can embrace who they really are and what they like… nerd, loud mouth, giant sappy fanatic, love starved neurotic, fool for Little Debbie Snack Cakes or say, Stevie Nicks tamborine portraits…let it fly I say!

I heart:
Christy Kane! It’s true. Lets talk over bubble tea soon and plot our next mini adventure in Darlaville. Or will it be House of Kane? Either way, looking forward to you and your lovely sewn goils!

Plush Puffs gourmet marshmallows - review

June 2nd, 2009 in eat, drink, be merry, reviews by Christy Kane

The perfect summer desert? S’mores! Christy is here to bring you an ingredient to take this campfire classic to a higher level ~wht

My view of marshmallows took a dynamic turn when I was asked to review Plush Puffs. I have always loved marshmallows, from those in my Frankenberry cereal when I was a wee lass, to the tiny marshmallows in my Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa. Luckily, I evolved over the years and discovered the joys of marshmallows in S’mores, and melting them into mashed sweet potatoes, but I never really thought of them as gourmet.

That has now forever changed! Plush Puffs takes marshmallows to a whole new level with bold flavors like Caramel Swirl, Chocolate Chipetta and Vanilla Bean. All are 100% natural, gluten free & naturally low in fat. And though all are delicious on their own, they highly suggest you try them heated; either melted in a hot drink, over a flame or in a recipe. Each box comes with some excellent serving suggestions. My favorite is melting a couple on top of your latte. I tried this with my box of Caramel Swirl Plush Puffs and became quickly addicted to the tasty combo.

They even have Simply S’mores Marshmallows that have done all the S’more work for you! “We begin with our Vanilla Bean marshmallow and then mix in all-natural graham pieces, dust the whole thing with light cocoa powder and top it with chocolate chips.” Getting hungry?

You can get crafty in the kitchen and discover some new flavor combos on your own, or head to their site and check out their recipe page for treats like Marshmallow Nachos. You heard me right, Marshmallow Nachos! Using broken pieces of waffle cones instead of tortillas, melt Plush Puffs, chocolate chips, and caramel on top. How fun of a treat is that for a slumber party? Whether you’re making them for your kids, or having ladies night, you’re in for a scrumptious treat. (I suggest hot chocolate for the kiddos, and Prosecco for the grown ups as a Marshmallow Nacho accompaniment.)

One more thing I officially love about Plush Puffs. When I found out I was writing this review, the first thing I thought of was my favorite Homestar Runner episode. And they must like it too, as they have a link to the episode on their About Us page under “Company Training Videos.” (and because it’s just too funny, we’re including it here)

Site update so I’m leaving you a test message…

      • You’re a lover of Flannery O’Connor *and* Auric Blends? We need to be friends. :)

      • Yea, I got it a few days back. I think maybe mid last week. Tbh, I don’t really like the first half, the March of the Zapotech. I mean it’s not bad but I find the tone of Realpeople Holland to be more fun and melodic.

I pretty much like all the songs on the Realpeople Holland part of the cd. Especially the last track, No Dice, even though there are no vocals the beat is really nice.
