Josie Maran Plumping Lip Gloss review

November 19th, 2009 in beauty & fashion, green monday, reviews by Katie Groves

josie-maran-lipgloss

Do you know why they added the “Super” to the “Model” and made them “Supermodels”? (Think Tyra, Bridget, Heidi, Josie). Because not only are they tall, thin and beautiful–they usually think of profound, world-changing products or services in their downtime. Where would the world be now without Heidi Klum’s addicting Project Runway? Or Tyra Banks’ talk show; and let’s not forget ANTM -America’s Next Top Model, for those of you living under a rock. (We still mourn Cindy’s House of Style on MTV ~wht) Today, we want to introduce you to supermodel turned entrepreneur Josie Maran who proclaims “I’m going to change the world one lipstick at a time.”

The beautiful and talented Josie Maran has descended from the Supermodel Deity pedestal to bring us her own line of eco-friendly, but high quality cosmetics. “The Josie Maran Cosmetics look is healthy, natural, and vibrant. It’s about enhancing, not covering. It’s about youthful, glowing skin.” To that end, Josie’s line is pure and natural, free of synthetics and full of organic, botanical ingredients. She makes it easy to see just what is (or isn’t) in your makeup with her handy icon labeling on her chic, made from recycled materials and biodegradable packaging.

Best of all, Josie made sure users of her line would never have to sacrifice style or quality in pursuit of a green lifestyle. This “luxury with a conscious” philosophy is visible in the entire naturally-elegant and carefully-edited line. This unpretentious yet luscious collection is full of flattering colors and gentle formulas to work for a large range of skin tones and types.

“What most women don’t realize is that when models and actresses look fresh-faced and makeup-free, its because they know how to apply their makeup to make it look that way…I’ve seen how makeup can make a person feel great. I want to share that with women everywhere.” Do you not just want to be Josie’s BFF right now? I know I do.

josieThe lucky ladies of the wht review team received Josie’s Plumping Lip Gloss in Daring described as a sheer shimmering rosy nude to give a test run. This gloss uses gentle Marine Collagen to plump (as opposed to the irritants found in other formulas) and gives a little tingle to the lips, while organic Argan oil works to soothe and and repair skin. Translation: this gloss has a bit of a kick, but without any itchiness or irritation.

I thought this plumping gloss gives a super-shiny, not sticky gloss that does NOT leave your lips feeling dry when you’re done! It has long lasting formula that is great for a daytime or office look (and shades like Bravery and Optimism will rock your more glam, evening style). A full 30-day use will leave you with some more permanently full and luscious lips.

Testers – did the Josie Maran Plumping Lip Gloss add some eco-conscious, supermodel worthy style to your look?

Kérastase review

September 10th, 2009 in beauty & fashion, reviews by Katie Groves

kerataseI might know my makeup (oh, she does~wht), but honestly, hair products sometimes completely overwhelm me. I don’t really know what ingredients do what or what function I need from a shampoo and conditioner that will be best for my hair. Kérastase to the rescue! Now, the names of their products might baffle you. They sure confuse me…and I speak fluent French! But I do understand color-coding. Know that and you can easily maneuver around the 4 main lines; Nutritive (orange) for varying levels of dry hair, Reflection (purple) for color treated, Resistance (green) has fortifying treatments for weak hair and Soleil (red) is for sun lovers. Et voila, Kérastase!

The lucky wht testers got to try a myriad of products from this amazing line…

I received, and am personally really loving, the Nectar Thermique, a leave-in, nourishing thermal protectant for dry hair. That’s fancy talk for a product to use directly before heat styling. Work a thin coat into your hair from ends to roots, blow dry with a round brush and then flat-iron for a healthy, soft-to-the-touch mane. Best part is, no build up (though girls with thinner or finer hair, I’d probably be wary of getting it too close to the roots). It also smells wonderful!

The Bain Oléo-Relax is a gentle, smoothing shampoo for “dry, rebellious hair.” Also good for girls with hair like mine. I only wash my hair 2 to 3 times a week but I still like to use milder shampoos to ease the dryness often induced by detergent-heavy shampoos. So clarifying, yet gentle shampoos such as this often really fit my bill.

Ok, I’m only 23 but I’m going grey. Steadily, not slowly. (Bad genes, totally my mother’s fault.) So, I dye my hair my natural color. I also like to spend time outdoors, and the easiest way to protect your color (whether it was $8 or $80) is to use a UV protectant spray like the Micro-Voile Protecteur.

Want something that works while you don’t? Voile Nuit is a overnight treatment for fine hair. It adds softness and shine, plus gets your hair ready for the day by providing anti-breakage protection.

We also got to try Sérum Oléo Relax, another leave-in for dry hair that concentrates more on smoothing, adding shine and frizz control. And Bain Satin, a shampoo for dry, sensitized (read: fried) hair. Very gentle yet nourishing.

Review team and readers: let us know about your new (or old) favorite Kérastase product!

Spinach Quiche Lorraine recipe

July 29th, 2009 in eat, drink, be merry, recipes by Katie Groves

QuicheFor those of you that know me, have read my posts and profile, or have stalked me in other ways to which I am oblivious, (let’s keep it that way), you know that I’m obsessed with France and all things French (Disclaimer: that being said, I don’t actually want to be French – I like America!) I do speak fluent French, find any excuse that I can to travel there and am still scheming up some way to get my career to lead me there, at least for a little while. Now, I know that this, the other “F-word” makes many Americans bristle, but they have given us so many great things! Over 1,000 types of cheese. One-third of all the wine in the world comes from France. Caudalie skincare, for crying out loud!

FranceOne of my favorite French foods is a good quiche. Quiche comes from the northeastern regions of Alsace and Lorraine – on the Rhine River border with Germany. Alsace and Lorraine actually were territories that went back and forth between the two countries many times until after World War I. The original quiches were open pies filled with an egg, cream custard and smoked bacon. The addition of onions make it Alsatian. The bottom crust was originally made from bread dough, eventually evolving into a short-crust or puff-pastry. It became popular in the U.S. after World War II. It’s great for any meal of the day!

My favorite type is a good Quiche Lorraine (with spinach and bacon). My mother (who is not French) always uses pie crust, but you can use puff pastry in a tarte pan for a more authentic look. I also happen to think homemade pie crust is better, but you’re welcome to use store-bought! It’s also often better if the quiche is refrigerated a few hours (even overnight) so that it isn’t runny when you cut into it, like it can be if you eat it right from the oven. Here’s a really delicious Quiche Lorraine recipe, plus one for my favorite crust..

Never-Fail Pie Crust (yields: 4 crusts or 2 covered pies)

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/3 cups shortening
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup cold water

PREPARATION
-In a large bowl, Cut the shortening into the 2 1/2 cups flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

-In a small bowl, combine the 6 tablespoons flour, 2 teaspoons salt and 1/2 cup water to make a paste. Mix paste into the flour and shortening mixture.

-Divide dough into 4 equal pieces and shape into rounds. Wrap securely in plastic and refrigerate overnight. (Balls can be frozen for future use).

Spinach Quiche Lorraine

  • 9 inch deep dish pie shell
  • 8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup roughly chopped fresh spinach
  • 1 cup shredded swiss or gruyere cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 10 oz. evaporated milk (2 small cans)
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper

PREPARATION
-Preheat oven to 425.

-In pie shell, combine bacon, spinach, cheese and onion.

-Separately, mix together eggs and milk, add salt and pepper. Pour into pie shell.

-Place quiche on baking sheet and put in the oven. Bake 15 minutes at 425, then reduce heat to 350 and bake 30 minutes more. It’s done when a knife inserted comes out clean. Bon appétit!

How to find the best travel deals

July 20th, 2009 in home & living, how to by Katie Groves

I don’t care if all of the political pundits and talking heads are saying otherwise (and don’t even get me started on the Kathy Lee hour on Today!) “Stay-cations” are lame. Well, let me qualify that – Stay-cations can be great ways to really see the city you live in with new eyes. But let’s be honest, Stay-cations are never as cool as the real deal. I’d like to think over the last few years I’ve honed some skills on finding great steals and deals on fabulous vacations. So I convinced S & T to let me share some of my not-so-secret-anymore tips with my wht family. Whether you are just trying to spice up a long weekend in the next state or make your international travel dreams a reality, I believe that you can make anything happen!

AirfareResearch, shop around, then book quickly. I think this is the biggest challenge of all. There are many places that just aren’t practical by train or car. Listen to the evening news on TV or radio. In this economy they are always reporting on fare sales that major airline companies are having. Use sites like SideStep (one of my absolute favorites), Hotwire or CheapOair to find bargain basement prices. If you find a price you like, don’t wait to book! Because often these sites are authorized to sell only 1 or 2 seats at bargain prices and then the deal is gone for good. It also helps to know what is a “regular” price for airfare to your desired destination so you have a basis for comparison. The Travel section at Bing gives you a 30 or 60 day outlook on average fare prices to any destination that you enter.

LodgingGet creative for big savings. Honestly, how much time are you really going to spend in your room? Not much, I hope, so you can definitely afford to scrimp here! Besides scouring the well-known travel sites for deals, check out Craigslist for weekly or monthly private home rentals or home swaps. These are often good deals because if you make the arrangement privately you don’t have to pay broker’s fees. NEVER wire money to anyone first, cash on delivery is the safest option for everyone. Also, rifle through the listings and reviews at Tripadvisor to find deals on lesser known hotels and bed & breakfasts. As always, the off-season never hurts!

ActivitiesDo your homework and act like a local. With all of the money you’ll be saving you can surely afford to pick up a travel book about your desired destination. I have 8 books about Paris and I’ve read them all cover to cover multiple times! These books are packed with tips about restaurants and attractions. They often list the prices or a range of prices so you can plan how, when and where to spend your money. When it comes to dining, if you’re a food-lover like me, don’t be set on 3 squares a day. A light breakfast and lunch leaves room in your stomach and money in your wallet to have a good splurge dinner one or two nights. In larger cities, try to avoid overly tourist-y areas to eat and buy souvenirs. The prices are notoriously higher. If their menu is translated into 7 languages it’s not authentic and usually overpriced. Tripadvisor can also help you find local treasures. For sightseeing, visit the websites of the places you know you’d like to visit to find deals. For example, most museums have evenings that are 1/2 price or free.

I hope these tips help you to get away this summer – and I’m always ready to hear some more!

Travel Tins - candle review

May 22nd, 2009 in home & living, reviews by Katie Groves

I am just plain gifted! Seriously, I have talent. I never miss an opportunity to spill food on my clothes. When I walk (and trip) I always manage to scrape and scuff my shoes and dent my heels. And even though I don’t actually touch them when they’re burning – candles that are in a reasonable proximity to me always drip wax everywhere and all over the furniture! (It’s true, we’ve heard Katie mention this several times! ~wht)

So I really think that they invented Travel Tins, scented travel candles, with me in mind. They come in lightweight, non-breakable travel-friendly tins. You should definitely remember them next time you’re going away – to help banish that stale hotel-room smell from your room and help you escape from your escape! Even cooler, you can bulk order them and customize them as wedding favors or freebies for your clients, etc. Genius. Plus at $6 retail, they don’t break the bank.

Travel Tins are made in the good old USA with evenly-burning soy wax and the wicks are 100% cotton. I got Jamaica Me Crazy, a mango-pineapple-coconut DELICIOUS scent that fills the whole room when it’s burning, which has really been helping me relax while cramming for a Finance final. They have approximately 40 different scents with new scents being added all the time.

Dom Perignon taste and Boone’s Farm budget? Travel tins are for you!

Review team: let us know which scent you received and if you’re going to be grabbing these for your next getaway.

Mother's Day Crafty Project - finished!

May 3rd, 2009 in Uncategorized by Katie Groves

The picture quality isnt great.  With the flash, it glared on the glass of the frame.  Without flash, it came out blurry…but this photo I think is OK.  I was really just not so sure about my painting on the matting…it looked like a big blue blob, but once I got it into the grame, it really grew on me!

Xen-Tan review

April 28th, 2009 in beauty & fashion, reviews by Katie Groves

(We’re very lucky at wht. Not only do we get to try a lot really amazing products (like this), we get testers who love some products so much, they volunteer to write about them! So please give Katie a warm welcome in her wht review debut of Xen-Tan’s Deep Bronze Instant Self-Tan. ~S)

It’s true. Brown flab is nicer than pasty white, never-seen-the-sun, flab. I’m not even one of those girls that is fair-haired and fair-skinned and is burn-only. I can get a pretty good tan, if I work at it. But I just do NOT want to get cancer. Nor, in 15-20 years, do I want to look like the brown leather couch that my parents have in their living room!

There are three basic steps to a fabulous fake glow.

1. Exfoliate. Exfoliate. Exfoliate. Give your legs, arms, chest, shoulders a good SCRUB. A salt scrub or other really gritty scrub works well. Shaving should be included in this step because you don’t want to shave off your tan the next day if you can help it!

2. Moisturize. Moisturize. Moisturize. You really want to be generous with the lotion rub every drop in. This step is dual purpose. Fully hydrated skin holds the tan longer. Plus, it helps to avoid unsightly splotches and streaks in the color.

3. Don’t be stingy. Be generous with the squirt self-tanner. Use a (moderately) big blob for every limb, carefully working it all over each leg or arm completely before moving on to the next one.

Self-tanners have really come a long way since their inception. You can still find orange-in-a-bottle if you so choose. But for a $25-$30 investment in a decent self-tanner, these results can be avoided! I was so lucky to get to try Xen-Tan’s Deep Bronze Instant Self-Tan ($26). They call it “a great once-a-week sunless tanning lotion, beautifully-sheer instant color. Long lasting sunless tan.” I’m proud to say that Xen-tan has trumped TooFaced’s Tanning Bed in a Tube as my new favorite self tanner. The Xen-Tan Deep Bronze is already a milky brown when it comes out of the tube, so you can instantly see where it’s going and that you have it rubbed in well! It only takes about 3 hours for the full color to appear on your skin. And it smells like cocoa butter – yum! (It’s actually based on a vanilla latte ~S. ) It really is the most natural, “comes from within” color I’ve ever gotten. And I’ve tried ‘em all – Decleor, Clarins, Dior, Clinique, Bliss, TooFaced, you name it! Bottom line: I HEART the Xen-Tan.

-Looking at that photo, pops of orange to play off the flowers would be fabulous.

-Pillows are a low cost way to make any room look better. Try discount stores like Marshalls. I just got a Jonathan Adler pillow there for a song!

-Paint; the cheapest, easiest (ok, a weekend of your time) and most fun way to make an impact. And all the walls don’t have to be the same color either. For example, paint the wall behind your bed a different color to act as kind of giant headboard!
