Removeez - don't have kids without it!

February 8th, 2010 in home & living, pets & kids, reviews by Tiffany Hicks

Anyone with young kids knows how just how messy and dirty they can be. I don’t think my kids can go a day without getting some kind of paint, marker, or unknown substance somewhere on their little bodies. Each night during bath time, I scrub and scrub to try to get them back to the squeaky clean kids I once knew. This isn’t always the easiest of tasks. Luckily, the brains behind Removeez came up with an easy solution.

What is Removeez you ask? It’s a citrus oil based remover that gets stuff off your skin that normal soap and water can’t remove, and does so gently and quickly. It’s that simple! This wonderful product was created by a Mom and Dad who were tired of scrubbing temporary tattoos, bandage markings, tar from the beach, and ink off of their child’s skin. Dematologist tested, this product not only works well, but is also made without parabens, phtyalates or PPB’s. Another plus, it’s cruelty free.

Having two very dirty children of my own, I immediately put Removeez to the test. My son had a temporary tattoo that had been lingering for weeks. I put a little Removeez on the tattoo and gently rubbed with my fingers. Not more than a few seconds later the tattoo was completely gone. Even my son was amazed with how quickly it came off. For the next test, I wanted to see how Removeez held up to permanent marker. I drew a large heart on my daughter’s hand with black permanent marker. I used a cotton pad with a few drops of Removeez on it and started rubbing. It took less than 30 seconds to completely remove all traces of the heart from her skin. We also tested this on the sticky substance band-aids leave behind and it worked like a charm.

Available in four yummy scents that are sure to please everyone: Coconut/Orange, Clove/Orange, Lavender/Orange and Eucalyptus/Orange. I tried the last two, which both smelled absolutely amazing.

I can’t recommend this product enough. Every parent should own a bottle of this amazing remover. If you have young kids, do yourself a favor and keep one on hand.

Jo Malone Red Roses Fragrance Chronicle

February 3rd, 2010 in beauty & fashion, reviews by Tiffany Hicks

photo: Tiffany Hicks

Valentine’s Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. Sure, I know technically you shouldn’t need a holiday to shower someone with your love, but who am I to complain if my husband feels inclined to buy me a few romantic gifts? On a typical Valentine’s Day, I come home to some chocolate covered strawberries, a bottle of red wine, a nice dinner, and last but not least…red roses. Believe it or not, I always try to convince my husband to forgo the roses on Valentine’s Day. I hate that he pays way too much for flowers that usually last less than a week. I’m a practical girl and would rather have a gift that would last much, much longer.

Luckily, this year I’ve found the perfect alternative to an overpriced dozen of red roses; Jo Malone’s Red Roses Fragrance Chronicle ($95). What is a fragrance chronicle you ask? Jo Malone, know for the philosophy of fragrance combining, makes it easy for you to create your own signature scent by combining her Red Roses fragrance with three accompanying accords packaged in an adorable story book gift box. The Red Roses Fragrance Chronicle comes with a 30 ml bottle of the Red Roses Cologne and a 9 ml bottle of each of the following accords: Moroccan Mint Leaf, Ice Rose, and Honeycomb. You choose the fragrances to blend together depending on your mood or occasion to create your own custom scent.

Now I know many people out there are thinking “rose fragrances just aren’t my cup of tea”. Let me start of by saying, this isn’t your grandma’s rose perfume. Jo Malone’s Red Rose fragrance is composed of seven of the world’s most expensive types of roses. It’s fresh and sexy and actually smells like a bouquet of freshly cut flowers. Blended with the accompanying accords, the red rose fragrance becomes something even more special. It’s amazing how different each blend smells. Right now, my favorite combination is Red Rose mixed with the spicy Moroccan Mint Leaf, but I haven’t found a combination that I didn’t like out of this set. Talk about getting your money’s worth, this story book collection is sure to last long past a real dozen of roses. Do yourself a favor and talk your loved one into treating you to a new kind of rose this Valentine’s Day. You won’t regret it!

We only got a couple of these. Did the lucky review team members who got to try this fall in love at first sniff? Let us know!

Chopped Salad recipe, with help from Silvermark

January 5th, 2010 in eat, drink, be merry, recipes by Tiffany Hicks

herb-snipsWhen we heart this sent me the Herb Snips from Silvermark, I was more than overjoyed. As a proud owner of their Toss & Chop Salad Scissors, I knew these would be the perfect addition to my kitchen. Luckily for me, they also included their chopped salad recipe book. With my well-tested Toss & Chops and my new Herb Snips in hand, I set out to make one of their recipes from their cookbook (which can be also found on their website). I chose the Chicken, Bacon and Blue Cheese chopped salad with Balsamic Scallion Vinaigrette. Mmm! This salad is super easy to make and so tasty.
photos: Tiffany Hicks

Dressing

  • 1/4 Balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 cup virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried onions or onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt
  • 1 scallion stalk (white part only) thinly sliced
  • Fresh Ground Pepper (to taste)

For the dressing, place all the ingredients together in a dressing jar and shake well. The dressing can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator. Look how perfect the Herb Snips are for cutting the scallions!

Salad

  • 1/4 red onion
  • 1 head iceberg lettuce, separated, washed and dried (I substituted romaine lettuce)
  • 1 skinless boneless split chicken breast, fully cooked, cooled, and cut into 1/2 inch slices
  • 1/4 lb. (4 oz.) crumbled blue cheese
  • 2 hard boiled eggs
  • 4 slices crispy bacon
  • 1 tomato, seeded (I used grape tomatoes)
  • I added avocado and Greek olives as well – feel free to customize at will!

silvermark salad

-Place the onion in a large bowl and Toss & Chop; Chop into small pieces.
-Add the lettuce and Toss & Chop until roughly chopped and reduced in size by approximately one third.
-Add in the sliced chicken breast, eggs and bacon and Toss & Chop until the ingredients are finely chopped.
-Then, add the blue cheese and approximately half of the dressing and mix until well coated. Serve the remaining dressing on the table.
-In a separate bowl, chop the tomato into small pieces and sprinkle on top as garnish (I left my grape tomatoes whole.) Serve immediately.

I must say, this was one delicious salad! Who else has made some great recipes with the help of Silvermark?

The truth behind my glowing skin - Murad!

November 5th, 2009 in beauty & fashion, reviews by Tiffany Hicks

MuradTrio1It’s hard to put a finger on my biggest skin issue; I’ve got them all! I’m a sufferer of crazy combination skin that changes with the seasons. One month I’m super oily, the next dry as a bone, and some months a little of both. I also fight acne, wrinkles and skin discoloration. Let’s just say I battle it all. One of my favorite skin care ingredients is Vitamin C – I’ve found that it helps with my combination of skin issues. We’ve all heard the benefits of using vitamin C enriched products in our skin care regimen. It’s known to increase collagen production, promote healing, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and minimize the appearance of scars. Seriously, what more could a girl ask for? When the folks from Murad sent over a few of their products, including the Essential-C Day Moisture with SPF 15 and the Active Radiance Serum, both packed with the anti-age fighting vitamin C, I was over the moon.

We’ve professed our love for Murad a number of times on we heart this. (Check out the rave reviews from our testing team on the Sleep Reform Serum, the AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser and the Oil Control Mattifier SPF 15). So, I was excited to see what the magic of Murad and Vitamin C could do for my not so magical combination skin.

I was lucky enough to receive three Murad classics, the Essential-C Day Moisture, the Active Radiance Serum and the Pomegranate Exfoliating Mask to try out. I’ve been using these products faithfully and am happy to say I’m quite pleased with the results (and my combo skin is too).

The Essential-C Day Moisture SPF 30 comes in a tube and is a perfect light moisturizer for daytime use. It does have a slight citrus scent, so if you are sensitive to fragrances, you might want to give this the sniff test. Scents usually do not bother me in beauty products and I really quite like the freshness of this one. Murad claims the Vitamin C and antioxidants work to protect skin from the environment. Another added bonus for me is the SPF 30. It’s a must to keep skin youthful and this formula goes on light, absorbs well and doesn’t leave me feeling greasy.

The Active Radiance Serum is another vitamin C enriched product and its benefits include encouraging collagen production and helping your skin resist environmental stress and damage. It is hands down one of the best serums I’ve tried in quite a while. The instructions state to use this twice daily after cleansing. Then, wait about a minute for maximum absorption before applying moisturizer or makeup. This serum gives your face a slight tingling sensation, but for me is completely non-irritating. I love that I can feel it working instantly. My skin absolutely loves this serum! I haven’t seen such a healthy glow on my face in such a long time.

Finally, I tested the Pomegranate Exfoliating Mask. According to Murad, this antioxidant-rich mask restores, revitalizes and balances combination skin. Perfect for me! Fruit enzymes work to dissolve dead skin and leave you with a soft, moisturized face. The masks are packaged in a box of six foils; one treatment per foil. However, I found that I had more than enough product using only half a package – hooray! You might even be able to squeeze out three uses with one pack to get even more for your money. Use once or twice a week for optimal results. I thought this mask had a nice silky texture to it and left my skin feeling nice and smooth. Bonus points for not leaving my face feeling tight and dry like a lot of masks tend to do.

True story: recently a friend asked me if I was pregnant. Not exactly the thing a non-pregnant girl wants to hear! She’s a good friend so I just came out and asked her if I looked like I was gaining weight. Luckily she said no, the reason she asked is because my face was absolutely glowing. (Tell her to lead with the glowing part next time! ~wht) This was after a month of using these products religiously. Of course, that just made my day and confirmed my love for Murad even more.

Anyone else glowing with love for Murad?

Ethel Gloves - review

September 10th, 2009 in home & living, reviews by Tiffany Hicks

ethel glovesOne of my favorite weekend activities is working in the yard. There is something stress relieving about pulling weeds, breathing in the fresh air and doing a little physical work once in awhile. A few weeks ago, while I was cleaning out one of my flowerbeds, I noticed the gardening gloves I wore just weren’t cutting it anymore. My hands were red and chapped when I took them off. Moisture had gotten inside of them and caused my hands to become quite irritated in a few spots. I commented to my husband that I really needed a new pair of gardening gloves. His reply was he thought I should get a pair like his…you know the big and bulky, manly kind. While they do a fantastic job protecting his hands, they just are not attractive or stylish one bit. I ignored his comment and knew I could find a cute pair that would protect my hands, fit well and last me more than one season.

Literally, the following week the ladies from we heart this sent me a package with two sets of Ethel Gloves to test…one for me and one for my daughter. It’s like someone was reading my mind and knew I needed these gloves. I instantly put them to the test and was not disappointed.

The minds behind Ethel Gloves designed their gloves with three key things in mind…Fashion, Function, and Protection. First and foremost, the gloves are designed to fit the contours of a woman’s hands. They come in three sizes and a variety of super cute patterns to choose from sure to please every woman. Not only are they attractive, but also, made really well. Crafted from breathable stretch fabric that keeps hands cool and most importantly, dry; you can feel confidant that these gloves will protect your hands. The fingertips and palms are reinforced with synthetic suede and a rubberized grip to provide extra protection where needed. Best of all these are machine washable, so when you are done playing in the dirt, you can just throw them in the wash. The children’s gloves are identical to the grown up version, but made to fit a child’s hands between the ages of 5-7. My daughter is 4 and these were a perfect fit for her. We’ve tried other child size gloves with no luck. They are all too big for her tiny little hands. She loved having a pair just like mom and has quickly become my little gardening helper. (Aww, you’ve managed to out cute the gloves with this great shot of the little gardener ~wht)

ethel for kids

I can’t recommend these gloves enough. They would make the perfect gift for any friend who loves to garden or for the mom that has everything. They are just what I was looking for in a glove and are an affordable luxury every garden lover should have.

Luckily for WHT readers, Ethel Gloves has kindly sent us a coupon code so you can try out your own pair! Save 10% on orders through September 30th by entering the code WEHEART at checkout.

A lucky handful (hee) of wht testers received a par of adorable Ethel gloves. Catch their reviews in the comments to see if the Ethel gloves were the perfect fit!

tarte eyeQuatic Summer Essentials set review

July 16th, 2009 in beauty & fashion, reviews by Tiffany Hicks

I don’t know about where you live, but summertime is in full swing in my state. Temperatures have been hitting the triple digit mark every day for weeks on end. It’s unbearably hot outside and the only relief I can get is by staying cool in some form of water. I’ve been to the lake, traveled to the beach, and most of my afternoons are spent hauling the kids to the pool. Of course, I still want to look my best while braving the heat and participating in all these water activities. And I don’t want my makeup to melt off the minute I walk outside. Enter tarte

You can imagine how happy I was when I received the eyeQuatic Waterproof Summer Essentials Set limited edition set to test. This kit contains three mermaid hued, gemstone inspired Lock & Roll shadows in turquoise, citrine, and tanzanite, a travel size Lights, Camera, Splashes! waterproof mascara and a huge mod-chic scarf in complimentary colors. This set couldn’t have come at a better time for me. The weekend after it arrived I was invited on a trip to the lake. I put the waterproof claims to test right away and I have to say I was so pleasantly pleased with the results.

The Lights, Camera, Splashes! waterproof mascara stayed put all day and still looked great that evening. The Lock & Roll shadows really do have some nice staying power and come in the perfect summer inspired colors; a shimmery gold, a light and bright lavender, and a bold turquoise. These cute little shadows are double ended, with a Vitamin E enriched cream shadow and brush on one end and a loose roll-on powder on the other. They are the perfect size to slip into your travel bag and are super easy to apply on the go with the built in brush and roller. As an added bonus, the cute scarf makes a wonderful summertime accessory. Tie it to a purse, use it as a head wrap, it’s large enough that you might even be able to use it as a halter top or a belt. This set contains everything you need for creating beautiful waterproof eyes in one cute little package.

Hi Chicks, Stef here. Sorry to bust in on Tiffany’s post but I wanted to share with you how I’ve been using these Lock & Roll shadows. The instructions say to apply a sheer wash on the lids, then add the loose powder on top to set the color and create a waterproof seal. Used like this, these really vivid colors end up much more subtle. Pretty, but I wanted to keep them bright. So instead, I’ve been concentrating the cream as an eyeliner, then applying the matching powder in the outer corners of my eye and crease. Used an eyeliner, the color stays just as vibrant as it is in the tube, making it perfect for punchy summer color!

Did the tarte eyeQuatic set make a splash with you? Let us know!

Plan an awesome kid's birthday party!

May 13th, 2009 in eat, drink, be merry, pets & kids by Tiffany Hicks

One of my favorite things in the world is planning a really great party. I love picking out the invitations, planning the menu, and all the little details that come along with it. For me, one of the perks of having kids is planning their birthday parties. Crazy I know, but I love it! Now don’t worry, I’m so not one of these parents who throws an extravagant party for a three year old. I’m more of the traditional backyard birthday party girl. I am not a fan of the “we’ll do it all for you birthday places”. I mean how much fun is that? I love picking out a theme and going from there. Since my son and daughter both have birthdays during the same week in September, I get a little antsy this time of the year. I have two parties to plan for one week, so I try to give myself a big head start. Luckily, there are tons of great resources on the web. You can plan a party from start to finish in the comfort of your own home. Here are a few of the sites I heart for birthday parties.

Invitations
Tickle Bellies was created by a mom who was looking for a unique birth announcement for her daughter. When she couldn’t find anything she liked, she decided to design her own and Tickle Bellies was born. You can also find cute family address labels, sippy cup stickers, and notepads here.

Inviting Smiles has some of the cutest invites out there. I love the ribbons and vellum embellished invites. If you are looking for something unique then you will find it here. They also carry a wide variety of other items including wedding invitations, note cards and some really cute baby shower gifts.

Cake
Who doesn’t love cake? While I usually hire a friend to create the most amazing birthday cakes for me, this year I think I’m gong to attempt to make these adorable, Hello Kitty Cake Pops. You can find this recipe and directions (and many more sweet ideas) at Bakerella. This woman is so talented…and she makes it look easy. Her cake pops have even been featured on the Martha Stewart Show and you can see her segment from the show here. Wow is all I can say!

Party Goods
When the Birthday Express catalog arrives in my mailbox, my son goes crazy. He’s a little bit like me and starts planning his party the minute it arrives. He loves picking out his theme. This year it’s going to be Star Wars…unless he changes his mind again??

What I love about the site Birthday in A Box is that you can order everything from the paper goods to party favors for any given theme with the click of one button. You’ll get all the basics covered and will be able to find a theme to please every girl or boy. They package them together as party kits and favor boxes (see their Star Wars Ultimate Box on the left). The favor boxes are a huge hit with the kids (and many of the parents) and they cost under $5 a piece.

Party Games
I have a hard time coming up with party games on my own, but luckily for me I’ve found Amazing Moms. It’s a great site to visit to find the perfect party games to go along with your theme. My son will be having light saber races and Jedi training at his Star Wars themed party thanks to this site.

Do you love to throw parties? I would love to hear some of your favorite party themes and party planning sites – for children and grown ups!

Mee Wee, Hip Hop for kids

April 15th, 2009 in pets & kids by Tiffany Hicks

My 6 year old son loves music. He plays Rock Band, jams out on his kid size electric guitar while dad plays the real thing, and has his own MP3 player. He also loves to listen to “grown up” music like mom and dad. While I’m happy my son has an ear for good music, I’m also extremely picky on what his young ears get to listen to.

When Stef email me and asked if my son would like to try out a hip hop CD made especially for kids, Mee Wee, I knew he would be so excited. I instantly knew this would become a hit in my household. The lyrics are kid friendly and appropriate and the songs are cool enough for a 6-8 year old to listen to. Just listen to some of the cute song titles: Kung Fu Kid, I Can Be Everything, and one of my favorites Me and My Guitar. The best part is my son can listen to hip hop all he wants to and I don’t have to worry about the language he is being exposed to. The site also has lesson plans and a free song download for teachers. As a former kindergarten teacher, I know these songs would of been a huge hit in my classroom. If you have a young fan of hip hop in your life, make sure to check out the Mee Wee site and have a listen.

We Heart Chasing Fireflies

March 18th, 2009 in pets & kids by Tiffany Hicks

Please welcome wht member and awesome Mom, Tiffany who is sharing her favorite catalog for both girls and boys, Chasing Fireflies ~ Tyna

I currently have a princess and a rock star living with me. Fortunately, one is my 3 year old daughter and the other is my 6 year old son. I truly believe that my daughter thinks she is a real princess and my son secretly wishes to be Ozzy Osbourne. I’m really not sure who created these alter personalities, but right now I blame Disney and the game Rock Band. Thanks Santa! My daughter is the epitome of the word girly. Everything has to be in her words, “like a princess”. If she decides an outfit is not pink enough, or girly enough, or twirly enough, then there is no way I can convince her to wear it. My son is the complete opposite. Everything for him has to be cool like a rock star. Each morning I hear, “Mom, this just isn’t cool enough!” or “Would a rock star wear this?”

At times, it’s pretty tough living with the two, but luckily I’ve found some really hip clothes from one of my favorite catalogs Chasing Fireflies. I can find everything to make my daughter feel like a princess and my son look like a rock star all in one place. If anyone else has some mini diva’s living with them, I thought I would share a few of my favorite recent finds.

How adorable are these glitter Mary Janes? (Aww, part princess, part Wizard of Oz and completely sweet ~T)

Or for the girl that twirls and dreams about ballerinas, how about these Tutu Cute Swimsuits? (I know a dancing girl or two that will love these! ~T)

And these Ruffle Shorties are about the cutest things I’ve ever seen. (OMG, they are so adorable! They are totally something I would never have worn as a kid and now find irresistible. ~T)

For the Rock Star in your life I’ve also found a few cool, hip things. (the one complaint I hear from family and friends with boys, is that the fun boy clothes are drastically outnumbered by all the pink, girl stuff. I love that Chasing Fireflies has so many unique and fun things for the boys. ~T)

Check out these skull Chuck Taylor All Star high tops. Sure to please any rock and roll boy. (Love these! They are Chucks so you know they will last and last. Hmm, available in Boy sizes 11 to 3 – Anybody know how that translates to Ladies size? I want. ~T)

And one of my favorites, this hip guitar flag tee is cool enough for even the pickiest boy.

You’ll find boys clothing and gear for little campers, bug and animal enthusiasts, mini pirates and more at the Chasing Fireflies site. Along with girly stuff galore. Perfectly fit for a princess, a ballerina or any little diva. And a costume department as well, in case they ever want to change roles.

Happy Shopping! Let me know what alter egos you have living with you. (And many thanks to Tiffany for this great kid source. We need to know good sources for presents to keep us on the top of the “coolest aunt” list! ~S)

Tinted moisturizer, Laura Geller’s Balance and Brighten, all kinds of scented lotion products, Aveda hair products, vintage t-shirts, flip flops in the summer, and a great pair of jeans.

      I NEVER go without these

eye cream, moisturizer, a really cute purse, some sorta lip product

Biggest splurge or steal in my closet

I have a hard time spending money on myself. I’d rather buy myself camera lenses or equipment that cost thousands of dollars than clothes or shoes. I’m pretty down to earth when it comes to spending money on clothes, but I will splurge on a nice purse or pair of jeans.

      do-gooder:
      Why I am one

I volunteer at the local elementary school on a weekly basis. I give my kids used clothes and toys to children’s shelters rather than selling them at consignment stores. I take my own reusable bags to the grocery store. I fill up two recycle bins a week.

      read, watch, listen:
      Favorite books

I’m a lighthearted reader…I like things that make me laugh. My favorite series is the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich. I enjoy listening to books on road trips. Audible.com is great! Being that I’m a former teacher, I had a thing for the Harry Potter books. I read them all. I also enjoy James Patterson and Sandra Brown. I’m addicted to the Twilight Series and am currently on book 4.

      Favorite bands

An Austin local is my all time favorite. Bob Schneider: http://www.bobschneidermusic.com/ It doesn’t hurt that he’s pretty good looking in the bad boy way (Sandra Bullock’s old flame). I also love Jack Johnson & John Mayer.

      Favorite TV shows

Lost, 30 Rock, The Office, How I Met Your Mother, Grey’s Anatomy and Friday Night Lights, and I’m embarrassed to admit I also watch Greek (reminds me of college.)

      Favorite movies

Almost Famous, Office Space, Dazed and Confused, Old School, SuperBad, Stepmom, Wedding Crashers, Knocked Up

      home & living:
My favorite room in my house

My kitchen. I spend the most time there. I love cooking a great meal and having friends over to enjoy it.

      pets & kids:
      I choose

      Kids

      potluck:
Five people (dead or alive) I’d invite to a party

John Kennedy Jr., Matthew McConaughey, Tina Fey, Oprah, and Jesus.

      If I were an 80’s movie/tv/music star, I’d be

Why Tiffany of course! Ok..not really, I’d rather be Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles. I had a thing for Jake Ryan and I think I was little bit like her in High School.

These products sound amazing. I’ve heard wonderful things about Sonya Dakar. I do have to say that that the Ultraluxe 9 Lotion sounds very intriguing. Would also love to hear from someone that’s used this regularly.

I also got to try Bare and I do have to say I love it. This is one of those glosses that went straight into my purse because I knew I would use it often. The color is just as described with a little shimmer to it. Keeps my lips nice and moisturized. [...]
