Intelligent Nutrients - the wht interview

March 22nd, 2010 in beauty & fashion, green monday by Tyna Werner

Welcome to another Green Monday readers! Today, we are thrilled to introduce you to a true pioneer and visionary in eco-conscious, natural and organic beauty, Horst M. Rechelbacher and his new line Intelligent Nutrients (IN). Horst’s lifelong dedication has lead him to this line, the ultimate in green beauty; products containing 100% food-based and certified organic ingredients. Before our review of the products, we have a fascinating interview with Mr. Rechelbacher himself, not only the man behind IN, but the founder of the plant based line Aveda.

we heart this: What originally lead you to the natural beauty industry?
Horst M. Rechelbacher: It was a physical disorder that led me to study natural medicine, particularly the medicines of India, Tibet, Nepal, the rainforests of Brazil and Peru, the Native Americans and European apothecary traditions.

Information affects our psychological and physiological state. Many of us have had life experiences where the fear of maintaining life was very dominating. This definitely leaves an imprint and will always be present in similar existing situations, causing us to judge fearfully or through feeling nurtured and safe. Learning how to manage our psychological state is definitely related to the physiological state.

It is medically documented that extreme stress causes extreme inflammation so we need to learn how to manage stress a daily basis. We are governed by information and information is accompanied by frequency. Frequency is then transmitted throughout our organs and their cellular system. We can change the meaning of information so that frequency responses can be absorbed through practicing interpretation of information and self-observation.

In my case, the fears experienced in my life, through my parents and through myself, brought me to the understanding that self preservation is linked to planetary preservation. I am the planet – I am made of same ingredients: soil, water, sun and air. This is why We are the Planet. Business has the opportunity to restore the Planet and serve its species so there is longevity and sustainability. This business interests me.

One of the biggest reasons I became an Aveda fan is “that smell”, like the smell of pure goodness! I was happy to get the same sensation with Intelligent Nutrients. How important is aroma when formulating your products?
It’s everything. It is the soul, the spirit of the product. Since ancient times, plant manufactured aroma molecules have been aides to humanity up until the time of petrochemical chemistry discovery. We began to synthesize and artificially mimic nature. However, plant manufactured isomers cannot be synthetically duplicated. Rather, Intelligent Nutrients’ interest is cultivation of nature in a nonpolluting way. Plant aroma molecules carry an amazing molecular activity which can instantly affect the way we feel physiological and psychologically. They carry properties of anti-bacteria, anti-fungi, anti-insect, anti-parasite, anti-viral, and anti-yeast; it is a purification system. However, we still need to observe them in the realm of toxicity because not all plant species are safe to digest and some are extremely toxic. This is why at Intelligent Nutrients we have only selected edible, food grade essential oils in our aroma and flavor therapeutic systems. I think to achieve the highest purity in delivery it is essential that they are organically grown and certified. Insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides have the ability to affect the plant molecule in a negative way. I have personally studied essential oils from all over the world, including 175 essential oils used in Indian Ayurvedic medicines, and these play a big part in making medicines in powder and oil forms. I use this information to make Intelligent Nutrients products.

There seems to be a lot of companies these days touting themselves as natural or organic, but upon looking at the ingredients list you start to see words you can’t pronounce. How is IN different, and truly organic?
Truly organic is being certified organic. One cannot obtain a certified organic certificate without following the strict rules of food rulings in the United States and the rest of the world. The main reason we are committed to certified organic is because we understand from the ground up the dangerous side effect of insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides.

I’m personally an organic farmer and studying soil nutrition with the University of Minnesota Organic Agricultural Department. We researched seeds, which are used in our products, have a tremendous ORAC (define Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) reading versus conventional grown seeds. The certified organic oil showed a significantly higher level of antioxidant properties. It is also documented that certified organic foods contain higher vitamin and mineral content. I don’t think organic is holistically understood how it relates to planetary preservation now and in the future. When soil lacks nutrition, so is the food that is grown it. Eventually when all living organism no longer exist in the soil, it becomes dormant and become sand-like dust that is easy to blow away. At Intelligent Nutrients, we look at organic as a necessity for planetary preservation and restoration. It has been scientifically verified that organic agriculture will grow equal amounts of foods to conventional farmers who use insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides.

What are your absolute favorite products of the line?
I have several favorites: I only use the Intelligent Nutrients cleansers because they are do not strip the body of its natural oil and nutrition. On the contrary, the cleansers are nourishing to the skin and provide great nutritional value.

I use the seven multifunctional aromatics because they are made to function and create a hygiene system. Each of the seven aromas is designed for different activities. I can use them on my body and in my environment for peace and purity. Total Body Elixir is a product line recently launched incorporating the seven multifunctional aromatics. On a daily basis, I give myself daily self-treatment massages after I cleanse. I use them at different times of the day from morning to evening before bedtime. Also, during my weekly massage session, my professional massage therapist uses the Total Body Elixirs.

For hair, the Volumizing Hair Spray is a personal favorite. I think the industry has not realized the contributions I have made with these products to the cosmetic industry. Plasticizing agents in styling and conditioning products are petrochemical and silicone charged substances that are non-digestible. In many cases, they are affiliated with toxins. I created an alternative to these toxic plasticizing ingredients and use food grade gums that are used in food product manufacturing. These food gums completely water soluble and digestible and give an amazing body building elements and holding agents for hair. Another great benefit of foods gums is that if one doesn’t want stiffness or hold, simply brush the hair and it will leave the hair with beautiful feel and aroma.

If someone were to try just one product as an introduction to IN, what would you suggest and why?
The ones they like to smell the best. I believe that what we love is what we are lonely for. This is something I call ‘sensory testing.’ If we really love and connect with an aromatic, so deeply that we are conscious of that connection and in a state of self-contentment, our body produces a chemical known as endorphin. Endorphins have the ability to actually strengthen our immune system, literally light up our cells energetically. To me, loving an aroma is the most important thing to those who are being introduced to the product.

What do you think is THE worst ingredient that traditional hair and skin care companies use, and why should we avoid it?
There are many and I think as a collective are linked to cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, liver, kidney, gallbladder and other inflammatory diseases. Toxins create inflammation and inflammation creates diseases in the body. Chemical components such phthalates, a byproduct of synthetic perfumery, are known cellular damaging agents, and have the ability to penetrate the female egg and male sperm. Babies are born with them because it’s in their mother’s body.

Preservatives, namely paraben, in personal care products have been prominent in news. Intelligent Nutrients has been very lucky to have a preservative made purely from herbs. It consists our extractions from spices from foods around the world. Surfactants and sulfactants are petrochemical detergents and foaming agents. Petrochemical small dust particles found in styling products and makeup ingredients such as heavy metals, iron, coal, cobalt, and sulfite, and mica minerals and other microdust ingredients have the ability to coat lungs. The list goes on.

There is so much information on your site, it’s amazing. It’s like a starters guide for a green lifestyle! But while we have you, what would you say to someone who is thinking about making better beauty choices, but is on the fence about why they should?
Making this decision is very personal. Often, whether inherited culturally, and inside and outside our family dynamics it has to do with our belief systems. You need to get involved. Become an intelligent, educated consumer. Go for the best. Look at personal and ecological impact.

And no wht interview is complete without a reach in our potluck question vault…

Me in a nutshell: I try to be useful and to enjoy myself while doing it.

I heart: Nature and everything in it.

I’m a do-gooder because I… study cause and affect.

You can have front row concert tickets to see anyone, who do you choose? Bob Dylan with his guitar, singing solo

My favorite room in my house and why: My meditation room

What’s your sign and do you fit the traits of it? I’m a scorpio, born November 11, 1941, and from what I’ve read I’m a true Scorpio.

Intelligent Nutrients - Green Monday Review

March 22nd, 2010 in beauty & fashion, green monday, reviews by Tyna Werner

After our interview with the founder, how excited all of us at we heart this were to take a closer look at products from Intelligent Nutrients! IN first caught our attention when we discovered it was the new line from Horst M. Rechelbacher, the man behind a wht favorite, Aveda. The yummy smelling, beloved line was one of the first to prove consumers were not only interested in beauty products that made you look good, they also wanted products that are good for you and the environment.

After much success with Aveda, Rechelbacher has moved on to even greener (heh) pastures with the introduction of Intelligent Nutrients (IN). This health-inspired line is 100% non-toxic, plant based and uses only Certified Organic ingredients, approved by the USDA and UK Soil Association.

Believing that “everything we put in and on our bodies must be nutritious and safe,” IN product lines are created with food-grade, organic ingredients free of harmful toxins. Of course, we’re not going to start licking our face cleanser, but we love the idea of beauty and body care that’s literally good enough to eat! IN is on a new path to beauty looking to create “result-oriented products that work through natural, plant-based preservatives, fixatives and aromatics.” You will find all products are free of plastics, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, silicone, lead and other toxic petrochemicals.

Plus, all of that organic goodness is wrapped up in striking, elegant and generously sized packages that are 100% recyclable without any non-recyclable parts. It doesn’t stop there, IN is a truly eco-conscious company that took action to become the first professional quality brand in the industry to purchase Renewable Energy Credits toward the manufacturing of all of its products.

Our review team had a chance to test items for both hair and skin and will be here shortly to share their thoughts on these IN products:

Leave In Conditioner – a nourishing leave in treatment that aids in styling (without the aid of silicone) while hydrating and protecting the hair and scalp.

Spray On Detangler – Safe for color treated hair, this detangler naturally softens and detangles hair for easy styling, and protects your tresses without weighing them down.

Finishing Gloss – For use on dry, medium textured hair, this glossy serum adds tons of shine while taming frizziness, fly-aways and split ends.

Perfect Hold Hairspray – the perfect finishing touch, this hairspray provides natural, flexable hold and smells divine!

Anti-Aging Cleanser – this creamy cleanser is suitable for all skin types, removing impurities while hydrating skin and maintaining its natural moisture balance.

Anti-Aging Moisture – a lightweight lotion free of parabens and silicone that is suited for all skin types. This organic lotion fights free radicals and inflammation of the skin, while hydrating the face.

Anti Aging Serum – This antioxidant rich, restorative serum works hard to prevent and correct signs of aging while improving the elasticity and texture of skin.

Anti Aging Mist – This spray on mist is made to work with the Anti-Aging Serum (for optimal serum application) and also balances and refreshes skin. It can also be used to sooth skin after shaving or anytime your skin could use a pick-me up!

Lip Delivery Nutrition – My favorite item so far, this lip balm (like all products) is good enough to eat – which is great considering the amount of balm my body ingests! Hydrating and anti-aging, this balm is packed with a “synergistic blend of black cumin, pumpkin, red grape, red raspberry and cranberry seed oils”, plus other nutritious food ingredients like coconut, sunflower seed, castor seed and palm kernel oils.

Growing up I was more of a Little People type of kid then a Barbie girl. But if you’ll take a look at our Photo of the Week, you’ll understand why I’m dying to get my hands on the latest Barbie incarnation from Mattel. Yep, our favorite characters on the small screen, those martini swilling, tortured souls of Mad Men will be getting the Barbie treatment. They might not be the ideal dolls for a little girl and the $74.95 is daunting, but check out the great details! Joan has her signature pen necklace, Don’s suit is cut to perfection and Betty’s dress with matching pumps is utterly divine. Start saving now – this special collection hits stores in July.

• My big discovery this week was truly groundbreaking as I realized, despite my occasional rosy red blotches, my skintone is cool. All right, you may not care, but this will make such a difference when I’m trying to find the perfect foundation or tinted moisturizer. Plus, it explains why even though I love the feel and formula of my Chanel make up, the color is always a little off – the notoriously yellow base of Chanel products works against my cool tone. Want to definitively define your skin tone? Beauty School Blog has a fascinating, detailed lesson plan: Skintones – Am I Cool or Warm?

• We love upcycling and repurposing our vintage scarves! (Click to see our How To: Scarf Gift Wrap). Here’s another fun and useful idea from the crafty folks at Vintage BulletinHow to make a Clutch Purse out of a Scarf

• This week’s aww-moment comes (again) from Cute Overload and some lucky peeps in my home state, Pennsylvania. Check out these incredible images of love and snuggles amongst the green grass between a tabby cat and a doe-eyed deer! Do I need to say anymore? Some Enchanted Morning

R.I.P Alex Chilton – Alternative Rock’s most influential singer songwriter passed away this week and there’s a good chance you’ve never even heard his name. Not to go all Rock Snob on you but the death of Big Star’s Alex Chilton made me ponder the fickle hand of fame. They should have been the biggest band in the world but diverted into cult hero status. Maybe not a lot of people heard the music of Big Star, but chances are good the kids that did went out and started their own band. With acts like R.E.M., Beck, Elliott Smith, Ryan Adams, The Replacements and Wilco citing Chilton as a major influence, that’s a pretty great legacy. The San Francisco Gate has a nice perspective: Why Alex Chilton should have been a big star

Etsy 4 for Friday - In like a lion...

March 19th, 2010 in etsy 4 for Friday by Tyna Werner

All right, we’re well past the ‘in” part of March, but between the Oscars and St. Paddy’s Day, our Etsy 4 For Friday picks have been filled. I was waiting to pay homage to one of my favorite little, old-timey sayings – one I’ve had a soft spot for ever since my kindergarten teacher had us all make lion masks (from paper plates and orange yarn), then let us growl and run around on all fours the entire school day! Did you know the proverb about March weather is based on astronomy? From the first of March to the end of the month the constellation Leo (the Lion) rises higher in the eastern sky (and Aries the ram/the lamb, gets lower in the western sky). So my picks today are a salute to the King of the Jungle, the majestic lion and tune in next week for Etsy finds to close out the month. Bet you can’t guess what the theme will be!

• I want to order a dozen of these Lion Gift Tags and Bookmarks and keep them on hand for every time I gift a book! You can write a message on the back of the bookmark (or leave it blank), label the tag, wrap your carefully selected book in a brown paper bag and tada – an elegant present. The bookmark is created from post-consumer recycled paper and shipped packaged in a cellophane sleeve.$1.75

• Aww, I love this so-very-70’s Vintage Cryin’ Lion Bank! Why the sad, single tear Mr. Lion? Probably because I spend all of my spare pennies instead of saving them in this adorable avocado green, plaster bank. $15

• The intricate detail on this hand carved Lion Pendant is amazing. Carved using a “lost wax process” the piece is then custom finished to this silvery sheen that resembles ancient Japanese bronzes. It would make a special gift for for the Leo (or lion lover) in your life. $175

• Double aww! How adorable would the little reigning royals of your household look in this King of the Jungle Hat!? This hand crocheted beanie is “designed to grow with your child,” and folds to adjust to your King or Queen as they grow. $30

Happy weekend we heart this readers! Our Photo of the Week is an image culled from the amazing collection of the Life Magazine Photo Archive hosted by Google. Here, Elizabeth Taylor reacts to winning her first Academy Award for Best Actress in Butterfield 8. You can view many more, incredible images from Oscar ceremonies past in the Academy Awards section. Great fashion, old Hollywood stars and black & white photography? Sounds like a good way to kill a few hours this weekend!

• Speaking of the Oscars, I heard two bits of news that have me looking forward to this years ceremony. First, my imaginary gay boyfriend, Neil Patrick Harris may be performing in the opening number (a rumor that has since been shot down, but I think they may be trying to keep the ceremony a secret – I’m hoping for a NPH cameo).

• Next, I’m hearing whispers that a John Hughes retrospective has been made for a special Oscar moment honoring the man that defined a generation (and I’ve got a little inside info on this one, it’s a go). Keep the tissues handy.

• And if you want to read up on the mind behind 16 Candles, The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, check out You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried: The Brat Pack, John Hughes, and Their Impact on a Generation a new book from Susannah Gora that’s getting rave reviews for her in-depth and well researched look at John Hughes and the Brat pack phenomenon (thanks for the tip Kellie.)

• Lots of our readers have been drooling over the collaboration between MAC and Liberty of London that will be released on March 11th. Check out our coverage of the collection, Give Me Liberty of London including the unveiling party and swatches for all the details.

• If you need more from this eclectic British line, you are in luck! My favorite shopping destination, Target will be releasing their own line of Liberty of London pieces, including housewares and clothing in 8 days. Hop on over to their site for a sneak preview of the items and prints in this collection. Then head to Facebook and take the Patternality Quiz to find the Target/Liberty of London pattern that matches your personality.

Happy weekend lovelies – see you all Monday!

Etsy 4 for Fridays - Red Carpet Dresses

March 5th, 2010 in etsy 4 for Friday by Tyna Werner

With Hollywood’s most glamorous event, the Oscars, in two days and Fashion Week just behind us, I thought it would be fun to play stylist for the day. Our 4 for Friday picks may not come not from Rodeo, Robertson or Fifth Avenue, but they would fit right in at Hollywood’s biggest fashion event (awards, shmards, we want to see the fashion). We may not all be able to afford haute couture, but we can look like we do by shopping the fashion forward designers of Etsy. Add some Hollywood glam to your life with these red carpet worthy dresses:

• Of course, to me, red carpet = red dress. I dream of being able to pull off a striking red dress like this Silk Rose Gown. Standing still, the long, lean line of this dress with the ruffled hem floating on the floor is so elegant – when walking the layers of silk chiffon move with astonishing volume. I love the gathered silk roses at the shoulders and the trailing black sash down the back of this dress. $495

• Not an obvious Oscar choice, but I fell head (make that hoodie) over heels for this Ruffled Hoodie Dress at the RedDoll shop. It would make a great dress for someone like Kristen Stewart, an actress not in the running for an award (she’ll be presenting with Taylor Lautner) so she can push the fashion envelope. People always want to see some skin at the Oscars and I like the idea of showing some leg for a change of pace. This black Gabardine dress is young and edgy with an air of sophistication sure to get her noticed. $145

• Here’s another beautiful gown for the women that wants to be covered without looking like her dress was pulled from the Mother of the Bride rack. Ironically, this Shirtdress Style Gown is a popular wedding style, but since I’ve never purchased a single bridal magazine I plead ignorance – I just heart the dress. While stars can afford to go to Carolina Herrera for Oscar night, lucky Etsy shoppers can purchase this homage to the fashion designer. $980

• I always think there is something so elegant about deep blue gowns. For some reason, there is normally only one or two per award show, which always surprises me. The right blue can be such a flattering and slimming color. This Charmeuse Elegant Evening Gown with a chiffon halter neck and rhinestone trim would look fab with a sweeping updo and a few select pieces of jewelry. Quick – someone invite me to a Costume Oscar Party! $85

Planning an Oscar Watching Party?

March 4th, 2010 in eat, drink, be merry, read, watch, listen by Tyna Werner

Here in Los Angeles, everyone’s going into overdrive for the big event this Sunday, the 82nd Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood. All of the hotels are filling up, the swag suites are open, reservations at the top restaurants are for VIPs only and the traffic is totally insane (more so).

For this everyday Jane citizen of Hollywood, the only true difference in my routine is the additional time it takes getting to and from the we heart this mailbox office that is located mere blocks from the center of the action, The Kodak Theatre. Hollywood Boulevard is closed down, full of trucks, lights, and equipment and of course, golden statuettes as it gears up for the biggest event of the year. Our image above is a shot we took last year a few days before the show. For more, check out this post, Sort-of Behind the Scenes at the Academy Awards for more pictures and a Tim Gunn sighting (he’s wearing JEANS!).

While we may not be planning a walk down the red carpet, we definitely want in on the fun! Here’s some of our favorite links for ways to liven up your Oscar watching with Academy Award worthy food and drinks, as well as some tips for throwing a Hollywood style bash:

Oscar Party Kits and Planning Ideas, including recipes and demos by Wolfgang Puck from The Academyof Motion Picture, Art & Design.

How To Throw an Oscar Party from eHow, includes tips on dressing the part, seating and (my fave) a suggestion to plug in a microphone and “announce” your guests as they arrive. (I suggest hiding the mike around the third round of cocktails).

• Stunning D.I.Y party ideas from Twig & Thistle with downloadable, printable invites and snack bags (Oscar Party Part 1) plus Oscar ballots, candy bag toppers and an old school candy tray (Oscar Party Part 2).

Awards Night Sugar Cookies – The one and only Bakerella does it again with these amazing Oscar shaped cookies. Get the step by step instructions (lots of photos too) for Oscar cookies and more movie treats to truly impress your party guests.

• Or just get them nice and tipsy! Serve the Golden Dream Cocktail described as “a liquid Creamsicle for grownups” from Apartment Therapy. This drink is a sweet and frothy, so it’s a great after dinner drink. Plus it’s golden hue is perfect for the occasion.

Anyone planning or attending an Oscar Watching Party?
We’d love to hear your ideas!

Oscar Worthy Books

March 2nd, 2010 in read, watch, listen by Tyna Werner

Well, I’ve finally recovered my Olympic fever and it’s already time to start thinking Oscars. With the Academy Awards ceremony taking place this Sunday, we’ll have a couple of Oscar inspired stories leading up to the big event, including a huge, red-carpet worthy beauty scoop we can’t wait to share!

But we’re not talking about my makeup addiction today, instead we’re indulging my reading obsession with a list of Oscar worthy books just in time for the big event. If you’re looking for your next book club selection, need to pick up some tidbits for lulls in conversations at that Oscar party you’re attending, or have of love of books and film, we’ve got a few book recommendations for you!

Books that Inspired Oscar Worthy Films:

The World According to Garp – This John Irving novel will always have a special place it my heart. Like all Irving stories it’s full of unforgettable characters, unpredictable (sometimes tragic) plot twists, a wacked out but completely loveable and relatable family and heart warming relationships (I still cry every time I read this book). The 1983 movie scored Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress nods for John Lithgow (as transgender, pro football player Roberta Muldoon) and Glenn Close (bringing just the right amount of warmth and no-nonsense nurse as Garp’s pre feminist Mom). It’s a novel (and film) that will be treasured for years (even if some of the 70’s era feminism reads a bit dated today).

The Cider House Rules – If you have already read Garp, why don’t you try another Oscar favorite based on an Irving novel? The 1999 film, the Cider House Rules garnered 5 nominations (including Best Picture) and netted Oscar statuettes for Michael Caine (Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and one for Mr. Irving himself (Best Writing, Based on Material Previously Published). Fans of the film will receive a fuller understanding of the characters and their actions and discover some plot twists and characters that didn’t make it to the film version.

Little Children – As a fan of Tom Perrotta (if you haven’t read and viewed Election, add it to your list) I was pleased to see him spread his wings a bit and write beyond the college years. Still, angst is abundant in this novel and you will soon see just who are the Little Children in this tale as immaturity, selfishness and bad decisions surround the cast of flawed, oddly sympathetic characters. The superb film received three Oscar noms; Best Sporting Actor (Jackie Earle Haley), Best Actress (loved Kate Winslet in this role) and Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay (Todd Field, Tom Perrotta).

All the President’s Men – I just reread this fast paced, thrilling novel from Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein for the first time since college. At first, a little burglary at Democratic Headquarters seems almost quaint, but you will soon be riveted to the detailed, chronological investigation of these two detemined journalists. Their dogged pursuit of the story lead to one of the US’s biggest sandals and the resignation of a President. The 1976 film stars the ever gorgeous Robert Redford as Washington Post reporter Woodward teaming up with Dustin Hoffman as partner Bernstein. The film was up for 8 Academy Awards and walked away with 4, including Best Supporting Actor (Jason Robards) and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium (William Goldman).

Rebecca – Here’s a classic that you may have yet to read or see. Yet once you’ve experienced Rebecca, (paraphrasing the much quoted opening line) you may find yourself dreaming of Manderley, the lush English country estate where the story takes place. The Daphne Du Maurier novel, like the film, is full of intrigue, mystery and suspense (it’s a Hitchcock film after all) with a plot that moves at just the right pace leading to a couple shocking reveals. The film received 11 nods and won 2 for Best Cinematography, (Black-and-White Category – sigh) and the biggie, Best Picture.

Up In The Air – This novel is one of four books that served as the inspiration for a Best Picture nominee in 2010. I enjoyed the wry, sweet and slightly smug film and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on the book from Walter Kirn. This one has mixed reviews from the readers at Amazon, so I can’t wait to see the source material for the well-received film. Have any we heart this members read this book?

Three additional Best Picture nominees began life as a book. If you are rooting for any of these films this Oscar Sunday, you may want to check out the book:
The Blind Side (Evolution of a Game) by Michael Lewis
Push (the novel that became Precious) by Sapphire
An Education by Lyn Barber

As a bonus, I asked my Mom (she’s both a big biography reader and a Hollywood buff) to share her favorite bios and memoirs about Oscar winning and nominated actors. Take it away, Mom!

Pickford: The Woman Who Made Hollywood by Eileen Whitfield. Mary Pickford rocked! Seriously, this Best Actress winner was so ahead of her time and was a very savvy businesswoman. If those who came after her had followed her lead, women would be kicking more butt at the box office!

Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland by Gerald Clarke and Me and My Shadows : A Family Memoir by Lorna Luft. I have two favorite books on the life of this two time Best Actress nominee. I love the first book because it covers the good times and not just the drama of Judy’s life. The second, Lorna Luft’s book about her mother really gives you a personal sense of the woman and her family. Plus you actually end up liking Sid Luft, her second husband. Or maybe that’s because he’s Lorna’s dad . . . nah.

Natasha: The Biography of Natalie Wood by Suzanne Finstad. This is my personal favorite of all the books written about this beautiful woman since her tragic death. There are others that are more lurid . . . but most of them read like a tabloid.

So simple, so yummy - Vegan "Tuna" Sandwich

March 1st, 2010 in eat, drink, be merry, green monday by Tyna Werner

photos: we heart this

We’ve got a fantastic, yet so simple sandwich this Green Monday for we heart this readers! As a vegetarian of over 15 years, one of the questions I am asked the most is “What do you eat for lunch?” Many people trying to go veggie or those just cutting back on meat have difficulty with lunch. Breakfast is easy and with a bit of research, a veggie main course for dinner can be planned with little effort.

It’s that middle meal that can be difficult, especially if you want to pack a lunch. For years, I went with two staples – salads and the occasional cheese sandwich. I seemed to have a mental freeze when trying to plan a yummy, easily prepared lunch. After some time, I gathered a few lunchtime basics that I’ll be sharing in upcoming posts. Today, I need to give a shout out to wht writer, Recessionista, some time ago she shared the ingenious idea of replacing canned tuna with garbanzo beans to create a vegetarian (or even vegan) tuna salad substitute.

This salad is a cinch and takes all of five, maybe up to ten minutes to make. Refrigerate the unused potion in an airtight container and use within a few days (though it’s never lasted longer then 24 hours in my house). I promise, this will soon become a lunchtime staple!

Best of all, you likely have all the ingredients in your kitchen right now!

If you don’t have garbanzo beans on hand, grab a few cans the next time you are at the grocery store. Since so many dinner recipes start with celery and onion, you can use some to mix up a batch of Garbanzo Bean Salad as a side project, while fixing dinner. Presto – you’ve made your lunch for a day or two at the same time!

Garbanzo Bean Salad
• 1 can of garbanzo beans
• 2 stalks of celery, chopped
• 1/4 onion, chopped
• 2 or 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise/Vegenaise
• Juice of half a lemon
• 1/4 teaspoon Salt
• 1/4 teaspoon Pepper

** Feel free to add garlic powder, sweet pickle relish, sun dried tomatoes, diced cucumbers, raisins, etc. Whatever items you like in your tuna salad, add into this veggie alternative.

– Rinse and drain the garbanzo beans.

– Pour into bowl and smush beans until desired consistency. I use a potato masher (pictured) but a sturdy fork can do the job.

The great thing about these tasty little beans (besides the fact they are full of protein and fill you up) is that the soft outer shell separates from the mashed bean and forms a texture very similar to tuna fish.

– Add the remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly.

–If possible chill for at least one hour, of if you can’t wait, no worries – start eating!

A quick note on the Vegenaise – before you turn your nose up at the thought, give it another try. They have worked on the taste since I tried it years ago and imo it’s a pretty great vegan alternative to mayo. It used to taste more like Miracle Whip spread (I’m not a big fan of the Whip) but they’ve softened that tangy taste. However, whatever you have in the fridge – fat free mayo, Miracle Whip, ranch dressing, and of course, even full fat mayo (lucky you) works here.

I love this simple salad on toasted wheat with fresh lettuce and tomato. It also travels well when spread generously on fluffy, fresh bread, wrapped carefully and carried to the office. Of course, I’ve devoured it on all types of crackers – what a fab midnight snack! Or top a bowl of fresh greens with a scoop of salad, lightly toss with Italian dressing and you get a very satisfying salad. Enjoy!
