There’s no denying I’m way to old to be browsing catalogs aimed at teen-agers. Not too mention, I can’t wear the sparkly make-up or use the super fruity lotions and shampoos found in tween collections. And I stopped being able to fit into junior sizes ages ago. I was sad to be losing a great way of staying stylish on a budget – shopping the kids and teen markets for trendy, style on the cheap.
Thank goodness for the popularity in home decorating shows and the emergence of fun, affordable decorating wares aimed at teenagers and young adults. Here’s one area I can still raid items for the younger generation! If your looking to add a splash of color, or a bit of whimsy to a room, shop the teen department of catalogs and stores for of-the-moment pieces at great prices. You’ll find plenty of house items to add some pop to your space and still work with your more refined style.
Take this flannel digi dot sheet set from pbTeen (as in Pottery Barn) that would add some color and spunk to a more sophisticated light blue or sage themed bedrooms. They would also be a happy welcome to visitors in the guest bedroom! (Full $59.99, Queen $69.99)
The Floral Eco-Chic Patterned Table Lamp, also from pbTeen, is stylish enough to work in many areas of your home. A little reading nook, your work desk or a bedside table would instantly be more cheerful with the striking, (and not at all too-girly) flower pattern. The Asian inspired shade will emit a soft, flattering glow – who wouldn’t like that?
I’m in love with this black cotton pillow with a silver heart foil design from dELiA’s (oh boy, just typing those letters made me feel old). I’ve always dreamed of an all black and white room and these pillows would be a great accent. They would be striking against a white couch, chair or bedspread. ($29)
Another fabulous find in dELiA’s Victorian themed collection are these dramatic black and white curtains that would demand attention in any room. (two panels for $48)
Finally, another great resource for a few signature pieces is Philadelphia’s own Urban Outfitters. Aimed more towards the college and just-after set, you’ll find everything from kitchenwares to lighting to window treatments. I love the look of these Rose Hooks that could turn you purse collection into an artistic statement arranged just so on a bedroom wall or lined up down a hallway. ($10 each)
Other standouts include this bright turquoise Mini Punch Lantern for use with candles that can be used indoors or out and has a hook for hanging – try stringing a row on your patio or balcony. ($12 each) Or check out this colorful set of four Confetti Mixing Bowls made from recycled melamine to brighten up your kitchen. ($28 )
