You want what you can’t have. Sigh, isn’t that the truth? For poker straight haired me, that equates to curls. Not only do I not have them, but I’ve been cursed as curling iron illiterate. I never know which way to roll them, I always get a kink from the clip and more often than not, I end up burning myself.

Completely resigned to my curl-free life, I receive an email from a lovely rep asking if I’d like to try the amika tourmaline curler wand ($199). I’d love to, I say, but share my curling incompetency for full disclosure. She tells me she used to be the exact same way, but thinks I will love this…

Guess what? I love it! I don’t think I’ve EVER had a head full of curls like this, especially not that I produced myself. And the best part, it was not hard. Way easier than a traditional curling iron.

On a superficial note, how cute! I received the zebra print as shown, but it also comes in solids, other jungle prints and even a vintage tattoo design. I found the 19mm wand to be the perfect width, but it’s available in a smaller 13mm and larger 25mm width as well.

Thanks to the tourmaline and ceramic infused barrel, it heats instantly (and I do mean instantly, ready to use in under 60 seconds!) And because it’s a wand, there was no clip to perplex me or give me kinks. I rolled up, I rolled under, I rolled sideways (spirals); producing a rather natural looking head of curls.

One small complaint; it does come with a glove, but it’s Ill-fitting and not much protection (holding the wand longer than a few seconds with it on produced an “oww!“) There are truly heat resistant gloves on the market, and I will be buying one. I would like to get the curl closer to the ends of my hair and that would do it.

Curls, I can hardly believe it! I owe it all to the amika curler wand. It’s a big investment, but well worth it if you want to be amongst the curly for the first time in your life. (Short on cash? You can buy the solid black version for just $121 on Amazon.)

  1. Your hair looks adorable @Stef. Just curious…do the curls stay longer with this? My hair is very straight and it doesn’t take much to make my curls fall flat.

  2. @tiffany – I’m sorry, I can’t really tell you if they stay longer as it’s kind of my intro to curls. But I can say this, I did this in the AM, then went to a neighbors to water his plants in 100 degree heat and I still had curls when I got home! I did use HerCut as well (for layers) and I think that helped a lot for keeping volume.

  3. Holy Gorgeousness Batman! @Stef your hair looks so great all curled up and snazzy! I’ve been reading about this and wanting to try one out, sounds really worth while… curls lasitng in 100 degree heat is no small feat!!!

  4. That’s mighty impressive, @Stef! One question: how long did it take from start to finish?
In general, I am curling iron challenged, but I think I could handle this one!

  5. Your hair is sick @stef !!! Wowzers!! I am impressed. I have very naturally curly hair. But the weight of the hair makes it less curly on top. So there are times when I would like to curl it up there. But I am not good with the old iron either. So I am very interested to hear about an easy to use piece of hardware like this that gets such great results. Exciting!

  6. Wow, those curls look great! I’m crazy enough that I actually have natural curls, but I straighten my hair, and then use a curling iron if I ever want just a few curls! This gives that perfect wave though, which I’m always trying to achieve, so I might be checking this splurge out!

  7. Those curls are adorable!! I’ve recently started using the Curly Girl routine for my hair and it has worked WONDERS. My hair was wavy to begin with but since changing my routine I’ve got some awesome S curls going on that I’ve thrilled with! It’s amazing what little changes can achieve :)

Oh Ma Wurd…Stef you so sassy!!!!

  9. @Icemaiden013 , I LOVE the Curly Girl routine! It seriously does wonders, doesn’t it?! Though I admit, I still shampoo my hair e/o day. I can’t get past the habit!

@Stef – Your hair looks great like that! And it’s true, we always want what we don’t have. I would LOVE to have straight hair, even if for just one day, and I’m seriously straight-iron deficient. I’m terrible at it!

  10. @stef – Love the curls on you! I can’t remember any time in the 20plus years I’ve known you that you had curls. Very cute.

And I am loving the sound of a curling iron without that stupid clip! I always get a weird opposite way kink with them no matter how hard I try. I also like how these are sort of soft waves vs full on ringlets.

@tiffany – I have the same issue – my hair can barely hold a curl (when I was little barrettes and ties would just slip out of my hair), so when I get to try @Stef‘s iron, I’ll let you know how it holds. I suspect it’s more about finding the right product to help your hair hold the curl, then the method of curling…

  11. Cuuuuute! I love the curls!
I’m intrigued by this. I have naturally wavy hair that responds well to curling, so this might be worth the investment.

Also, totally digging the leopard print couch @stef! :D

  12. Absolutely gorgeous, @stef! If I didn’t have naturally wavy hair, I would be ALL over this. The wave pattern in your hair looks as natural as you can get! It’s truly stunning on you.

  13. @turboterp – well, it wasn’t a super quick process! I’d say 20 minutes? Not an everyday thing, but well worth it for something special.

  14. @spitfire77 – you crack me up! You have curls, but straighten them and add them back? Do you need a hobby? I’m worried about you! :)

  15. I love it, so gorgeous..I definitely want to try!

ps..I think I get better results when I’m doing curling when I blow-dry, then straighten, then let it sit a little..then curl :p
