Michael Todd's Naked Kiss lipsticksphotos: we heart this

I’d normally call myself a lip gloss girl. But as the temperatures drop, and my makeup coverage amps up, I find myself reaching for lipstick over gloss every time. Only problem? I’m really picky about how my lipsticks feel. Even a hint of dryness, it gets banished to the back of the vanity. But a lipstick that has been in heavy rotation since it’s arrival? Michael Todd’s Naked Kiss.

Of course if you received a gift bag in our Raffle for the Rescues, I’m going to be preaching to the choir (as they were big supporters of the event). But if not, let me tell you a bit about this company.

Their line contains over 1,100 products. Go on, wrap your head around that for a minute. So, that means if you tried a new product every day, it would take you 3 years to get through the line. (Luckily we only got four lipsticks to try!) Made entirely in the US, the company is co-owned by Michael Todd and Lewis Hendler, co-founder of scunci International (readers know I proudly let my scrunci flag fly!) But none of that is what you really need to know. What you need to know is how nice these lipsticks are!

Naked Kiss is their newest formula, packed with moisturizers and what they call an “anti-aging concentrate”. I can’t attest to my lips looking any younger. But I can say that these are very smooth. How smooth? Lip Balm smooth. The kind of lipstick that feels good on your lips. The kind that you reach for over and over again.

We got to try:
Courage – shimmering rose brown
Hope – shimmering brick red
Affection – bright red
Guilt – medium dusty pink

Catch the theme? All the Naked Kiss lipsticks are named after emotions. Give me Courage any day of the week over Pink 104! Another thing to love about these? The compact size which stealthly hides 4 g worth of lipsticks (for comparison, MAC lipsticks are 3 g).

Last but certainly not least, the price! You can find a large range of Michael Todd lipsticks on the All Cosmetics wholesale site for just $9.99! (And if you’ve never been to that site before, you’re welcome.) If it’s not there, you’ll have to head over to their own site for the entire range, where the lipsticks are $16 (sorry, but boo!)

Four of us got to try the “expressive” new Naked Kiss lipsticks. And many others got to try their existing formulas. So, what did you think? Are you feeling joy, satisfaction, even lust?!

  1. I did receive a Raffle for the Rescues gift bag, so I’m shouting AMEN to your post, @stef! Your story about switching from gloss to lipstick when the weather gets cooler– that’s me! And Michael Todd’s lipsticks are so smooth and soothing, I can’t think of a lipstick line with a nicer formula. I am a huge new fan!

Thanks for the All Cosmetics link. Picking up a few new Michael Todd colors at a discount will be nice, but I love these so much, I’d pay full price without flinching.

  2. I got Cocoa in my gift bag, I love love love that the color is build-able. It looked almost too dark for daily wear when I opened it first but it goes on almost sheer. This formula is amazing, I love it!

  3. I got Hope. And look at it. I mean, seriously, LOOK AT IT. How can you not be in love with that sparkly brick red?
I am NOT a lipstick fan. But this lipstick is a great gateway drug. It’s smooth, light and applies easily. And I wear it fairly often now, instead of my beloved lip stain and gloss. (Okay, so I applied a little gloss over top. I can’t help myself.)
It’s just such a wearable color, not too dark or pigmented that you’ll be scared off, but enough that you know you’re applying color and don’t have to goop it on.

    I give this 5 stars.

(I also want to say that I got another color, but it’s name escapes me as it was overshadowed by my Hope love. I’ll comment again when I get home and get the name.)

  4. I’m not a huge lipstick fan either but I did like this lipstick. I’m kind of eyeing the Guilt though…I might look into purchasing that, I really like the shade. I rarely wear lipstick but I feel like the shade is pretty doable for many events/occassions/etc. Great review, @Stef!

  5. Guilt looks great. I had one of their lipsticks called “truffle” in my R for the R gift bag. It was a little too brown for me but I liked how sheer it was. Guilt would be a great nudish lipsheer it seems.

  6. I must get my hands on Guilt. It looks gorgeous!!

I did have the distinct pleasure of trying Michael Todd’s lipstick in the shades of Affection and Maple.

I love this lipstick! I am super serious about my lip products. I tend to get dry and gunky lips. So I try very hard to choose products that won’t contribute to those problems. This formulation is amazing! It is so smooth and comfortable. And yes, it is kissable. My husband hates when I have anything particularly tacky, sticky, or heavy on my lips. But he was pleasantly surprised by this lipstick. As was I!

Affection is a very bright red. But it can be blotted and muted for more of an everyday look. But it is a bold and beautiful choice for holidays, evenings, and anytime you are looking to be daring. The perfect classic Christmas shade!

Maple is a gorgeous nude of sorts. It is a slightly sheer and shimmery light “maple” brown. It is very pretty and perfect for everyday or for days when you are emphasizing your eyes only.

I give both shades and just the overall Michael Todd lipstick formulation 5 stars!! Delightful!!!

  7. In my gift bag from the Raffle for the Rescuers’ I happily discovered Michael Todd’s Naked Kiss in Truffle and Cocoa. Both are gorgeous on- noticeable yet subtle enough to wear at work. They are nice in that they offer great coverage and are super smooth in texture. I had no idea how enormous this cosmetics company was and always appreciate learning such facts as it’s not another imported product but made right here in the greatest nation! This is very creamy and both are in constant rotation just as @stef mentions in her uses of hers. She is the lipstick/gloss guru!

  8. My other color I tried was Truffle, and I must say that at first I put it on and went “yuck.” It is a brown with a cool purple tone that I thought looked a little blah.
However, since I am a Very Serious and Scientific Tester, I put it on and then walked away for a while and then came back to get a second look. I was pleasantly surprised, the brown is nothing to write home about, but if I was going for a brighter or more emphasized eye, this would be great.
The formula is still great, smooth and silky and slippery enough for a habitual gloss user like me to be satisified and not to do running for my tube.
    Still 5 stars from me!!

  9. I’m a lipstick more than gloss girl and these look gorgeous. Great post @Stef. Will have to check these out.

  10. I don’t know how the new Naked Kiss formula stacks up against the older formulas (everyone who got a lipstick in the gift bag got the older formula, anything that isn’t named an emotion). But they say it’s their smoothest formula yet. Which is so interesting because all the girls who got them in gift bags are commenting on how smooth they are! Ya’ll will flip if you try Naked Kiss then!

  11. I was lucky enough to receive “Guilt” to review. I have to be honest, over the years I have kind of fallen out of love with lipstick. No matter what brand I tried luxury or drugstore they all dried out my lips. Overtime, lipstick fell out of favor with my beauty routine.

This is not true with the “naked kiss” formulation. It was moisturizing to my finicky lips that normally crack and dry out in nothing flat. This lipstick feels like silk and my lips literally sing “AAAHHH.” It feels like a therapeutic.

In my mind this is a decant product for a reasonable price.

    5 stars for me.

  12. @stef, I honestly can’t tell much a difference between the two. The Naked Kiss formula seems slightly lighter and the more balm-like of the two, but I didn’t feel a definite difference.

But I can say that Truffle, the older formula, does not feel like a typical lipstick. So if Naked Kiss is the improved version, they’re improving on a product that already pretty dang good!!

  13. I Got “Cocoa” in my gift bag and it has become one I reach for constantly! I love the texture, consistency and color, which is a lovely brown/red burgundy type color. I also am loving the size of this one… nice and compact. I will definitely be checking out the other colors!

    Solid four stars!

  14. I received the Naked Kiss lipstick in “Rose” to test out. I found the moisturizing factor to be pretty average, which was disappointing given their claim. It didn’t fade or feather, and was fairly long lasting for a lipstick. The “Rose” color is a lovely natural pinkish mauve color that looks like my lips but better. I love the color. While I’m not a huge fan of lipstick, I do love that there is 4g of product in a nice compact tube, and it’s a pretty decent product. Three stars.

  15. Hey review team, the colors that are named after emotions are the new, smoother formula. Rose, Truffle, Cocoa – they are all the older formula.

  16. I got one of the old formulas, Maple, in my gift bag and while the color is not the best for me (a very light, sheer brown – I’d actually say beige almost), the formula is absolutely amazing! I carry this in my purse and use it almost daily when I need moisture. I would love to have this same formula in a more pigmented color – probably Hope or Affection. Can’t wait to see more from this company!
