I have curly hair that I pretty much let do its own thing. (And attempt not to anger lest it take revenge upon me…) But sometimes, I get a need for a sleek, straight hairstyle and my hair needs to be tamed and occasionally beaten into submission. It’s a struggle, and the style only lasts about a day or so before I give in and go back into my curls. With this head of hair, I’m thanking the Hair Gods for Alterna Haircare.

As we learned last week when we checked out their Bamboo Smooth line, Alterna melds innovative science and technology with eco-friendly (and often vegan!) products to give you solutions to those pesky hair care problems like frizz, thinning hair and damage from age and environment. And they do it without any parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes and other harsh ingredients.

Not sold already? How about testimony that Alterna products really work? My unruly mane and I got to try two products from the Caviar line: one each to alternately tame and baby my hair. And I’m in love.

The Caviar collection contains Alterna’s renowned anti-aging products packed with Caviar Extract and Vitamin C for improvements in shine, vibrancy and elasticity. In fact, the Caviar line is “clinically proven to minimize the visible signs of aging – 100% of women showed visible improvement in shine, texture, softness and manageability after just one use.”

My hair bowed down to the power of the Alterna and Caviar! The Perfect Blowout Crème ($24) rivaled any other heat styling product I’ve used. This new creme helps to protect hair against thermal damage while conditioning hair and taming the frizzies. The “perfect blowout” was indeed in reach, as the creme transforms my tresses, making my coarse curly hair smooth and shiny. It stood up to the Texas semi-humidity of late winter exceedingly well, making me hopeful for the summer months.

To baby my hair after subjecting it to the hair dryer and flat iron, I applied the Overnight Hair Rescue ($35). This deeply conditioning treatment “repairs and replenishes damaged hair…and reinforces hair strength” while you sleep! And I was really pleased to see it stayed ON my hair and not all over my pillow. In the morning, my hair felt nice and soft after washing, and not greasy at all. However, I only see improvement if I keep using it 2 to 3 times a week as suggested.

Our review team also put two more anti-aging products to the test, the Caviar Full-body Volume Crème, a root lifting medium hold crème and the Seasilk Oil Gel, a styler and treatment all in one for dry, damaged hair.

Pros:
Not a lot of product is needed with any of them to do its job.
Scent, clean and light.

Cons:
More pricey than I’d usually pay for styling products. However, if this is a special occasion product and not for everyday use? Completely worth it.

I’m definitely going to continue buying Alterna products; anything that brings harmony between me and my hair is worth sticking with! we heartsters and Testers – are you and your hair living the good life with Alterna’s Caviar Anti-Aging Hair Products?

  1. I’ve always found Alterna to be the rare luxury haircare line that does just what it promises, and the Caviar products I’ve tried in the past have been wonderful. Thanks for your take on these new products, @lyssachelle ! Perfect Blowout Crème is now on my shopping list.

    1. I must admit, I was a little shocked when I realized how well these AND the Bamboo line worked. I’m so used to products not living up to the hype, but these totally do! So glad you’re convert, @turboterp! :-)

  2. Great post! I have heard of friends that use the Caviar line and rave about it. I wonder if it would be too heavy for my fine hair? This post may just be the thing to push me to spend the money!

    1. @glamazon56, I would definitely see if you can snag your friend’s bottle and try out the Blow-Out Creme before you buy. I THINK it would be good for fine hair because it’s rather light for a heat-styling product, but my hair is thick and border-line coarse so I don’t have the best perspective. I’d hate for it to weigh your hair down and you have you be disappointed! :-)

  3. I tested ALTERNA CAVIAR Anti-Aging Overnight Hair Rescue. What big claims it boasted! I have hair that is in constant need of special treatment and honestly, It can look like I’m part wild women if left alone.. I swim, I wash, I condition, I blow-dry, I flat iron it and yes, ½ my head is grey underneath it all, so I color! I am pleased to say I have approved this product for all it’s claims. The best part is it works while you Sleep- nice.. It penetrates deeply into my hair truly mending – I noticed it after the first use. Crazy stuff! My hair has written a thank you note to Alterna, cause it likes this. It looks better for it, and has less breakage. It’ s easy to use and smells AWESOME! I rubbed together a small amount about a half dollar in my palm and applied mostly to the ends of my hair and throughout evenly. About ½ hour before bed. I use this only once a week. Love it! Four stars! The price is steep but worth it… Would like to see this in a bigger bottle!

    1. I’m so glad to see you have a difference after only using it once a week! I think mine is so think and stubborn is just resists change! :-) I would love a bigger size also, especially for the price, but this is definitely a five star product from me!

  4. I definitely don’t need any help in the categories for the Caviar line (shine and softness are two things I have plenty of with my fine, super oily, sensitive strands….as long as I wash it every day. If I don’t wash it, that softness turns into slime and the shine looks like grease. Yea, NOT CUTE).

Now, if they had something that worked for extremely delicate and sensitive, extremely oily, fine-strand, slightly limp hair (that was preferably non-scented) I would be going woo hoo, let me have a sample. Otherwise, I’ll stay with my Aussie/Neutrogena diet. Things that add nourishment just add slime to my hair!

Sometimes a certain line takes longer so don’t give up yet! I know in about a week because my hair is fine and sensitive. Thicker hair generally takes longer!

  5. Good review, Alyssa! :) I personally don’t like to shell out a lot of money on haircare products–I’ve just found a great leave in conditioner that’s only $4!

  6. I tested the Seasilk Oil Gel, a one of a kind oil-gel hybrid designed to provide hydration/smoothness for dry hair (the oil part) and styling definition (the gel part). It’s a great idea, and I have a hard time knocking this company I love so much, but this particular product did not win me over. The smell is gorgeous and I wish I could bathe in it, but that’s all I’m a fan of. First, the pump let’s out too little of product for the dime size amount you want to use – and even that amount is way too small to cover my hair. I do have very thick shoulder length hair- and it’s dry and pretty frizzy – so this product should be made for it. After putting on triple or quadruple what it calls for, I can start to see it tame the frizzies and hold a decent style, but it feels to wiry now and not smooth enough. It doesn’t then make for a very easy blow-dry. It’s a little better on my dry hair for taming frizzies, but I’ve used other less expensive products that give me better results with less separation and more softness and shine. I think my thick hair needs more oil/silicone to be happy. This may work better for thinner hair? I hope someone with finer hair can chime in on it! Great concept and I can see it getting there with a little more development. Unfortunately for me for now, I can only give it two stars :-(.
But, I have to say that although we are not reviewing them for this particular post, I am in love with the shampoo and conditioner from this caviar line!! Those I give five stars and consider them my best ever shampoo/conditioner combo! My hair’s never looked better after using them. The price is pretty high but the results are unmistakably worth it!!
