My newest obsession is The Nostalgia Machine, a website that encourages you to “get your childhood jam on.” Plug in the year you want and you get an instant video mixtape from your youth. And in all different genres – I put in the year I graduated from high school and got videos from Hanson, Ginuwine, Celine Dion, Third Eye Blind and Spice Girls. I felt like I was lying in my daybed back home, reading Sassy and repeatedly hitting the ‘Seek’ button on my bedside clock radio…
Watching all those artists from back in the day made me think about trends from my teen years; what worked, what didn’t and a few things I still secretly miss. So this week, let’s play a round of 3 things all about the teen trends from the years YOU were a teenager!
Your Defining Trend in High School: Oversized button-ups over tank tops. I cannot tell you how many flannel shirts I bought in the men’s section of Wal-mart my senior year.
Trend You Never Got Into: I’m sorry to betray you, 1996, but body glitter. I wore it when my friends did, but it felt like rubbing gritty hair gel onto your skin.
Trend You Wish You Could Have Pulled Off: Having curly hair and living in humid Texas kept me from pulling off a lot of the popular hairstyles of my teen years. So, unfortunately, no pictures of me rockin’ some mini-buns and butterfly clips, a spiky ponytail or the ultimate prom hair – a gelled updo with spiral curls and two perfectly straight tendrils running down either side of my face.
Then again, that’s probably a blessing in disguise. Your turn, we heartsters. Cut and paste the following into the comments and tell us these 3 Things!
