Easy DIY Project #1 – Give Thanks Bunting

Give Thanks Bunting

Supplies:

    1. Pre-Cut Burlap Bunting Kit (or hand-cut 5×6” with triangle cut out from bottom)

    1. Twine

    1. Spouncer

    1. Brown Acrylic Paint

    1. Plate

    1. Letter Stencils

    1. Burlap Flower

    1. Hot Glue Gun

    1. Newspaper or Scrap Paper

    Hairdryer (optional)

Tip: You can purchase burlap kits on Amazon or in a craft store – or hand-cut your own rectangles, adding an upside-down ‘V’ cut to achieve the same look.

Directions:

Before you begin, be sure to cover your workspace with newspaper, as the paint has a tendency to leak through the burlap.

Pre-Cut Burlap Bunting Kit

1. Take one rectangle and start by folding over a 1/2 inch of the top edge.

2. Next, flip the burlap over and center the first letter stencil on the front.

3. Apply a small amount of paint to your plate. Take a spouncer and apply an even amount of paint, by moving it in an up and down motion on the paint.

Tip: The key is to not use too much paint, otherwise it may bleed under your edge.

Painted stencil

4. Carefully apply paint onto stencil. Be cautious of the edges of your stencil, to avoid paint going where it doesn’t belong.

5. Remove the stencil. Take a hairdryer and blow dry the paint dry for a minute or two.

6. Continue the stenciling process for remaining letters.

7. Once you are done stenciling your letters, it’s time to string them up! Decide on the length of the cord depending on the space you will be hanging the banner and the length of your message. Tie a loop at the end of your twine for hanging, and place your first stenciled bunting flag face-down, moving the twine inside folded top edge. Hot glue the folded edge over the twine.

8. Continue the process, placing a new letter every inch or so, making sure the space between each letter is even.

9. Add a plain flag between the words ‘Give’ and ‘Thanks’. To spice things up, I crafted a quick burlap flower and hot glued it onto the plain flag.

10. Hang the bunting, step back and admire your work!

    1. Letter Stencils (2 inches tall)

    1. Brown Acrylic Paint

    1. Spouncer

    1. Plate

    1. Masking Tape

    1. Paper/Pencil/Paper

    1. Newspaper

    Ruler

1. Start by centering your burlap table runner roll (found at Amazon or your local craft supply shop) on your dining table, allowing the same length of overhang on each side.

Grateful stencil

2. Use a pencil to stencil the words ‘grateful’ and ‘thankful’ on a piece of paper. This will act as your guide for letter placement.

3. Secure a ruler with masking tape to the burlap runner, one inch from the table edge. This will help to keep your stenciling straight. Tape the stenciled paper above the area where you will be stenciling on the burlap. Be sure to center your word.

applying a coat of paint

4. Starting about 3 inches from the edge, carefully begin to apply an even coat of paint with a spouncer for each letter of your word.

5. Once you have finished stenciling your first word, repeat the process on the opposite side of the runner, using a second word or phrase.

6. Let dry

  1. I love BOTH of these projects-so rustic and pretty, and totally do-able! I’m thinking the runner would look so lovely with bowls of gilded pears; thanks for the inspiration!

  2. I love these ideas! Mostly because I love burlap probably more than is healthy. It’s just so rustic! I used it to make drapes in two of my bedrooms and to make the valance and door covering in my kitchen–it’s just so CHEAP and manages to look warm and homey at the same time. It also looks awesome swaddled around the base of a Christmas tree.

    Thanks for sharing, @rachelshay!

    1. Krista – Burlap curtains – BRILLIANT! I’m having quite the love affair with burlap these days too!
