New Products from Burt’s Bees, a Favorite Good-for-You-Good-for-the-Planet Company

Natural is all the rage these days. The tougher and more chaotic life becomes, the more we crave the simple, back-to-nature lifestyle. Nowhere is simple, natural movement more prevalent than in the cosmetics we use. And no cosmetic company has such a long-standing reputation for natural simplicity than the 30-year old Burt’s Bees.

We’d like to take a moment to mention the recent passing of Burt’s Bees co-founder Burt Shavitz; the dog-loving, motorcycle-riding, former photojournalist beekeeper who was, and still is, the inspiration for the line. The company promise to always honor his impact and legacy, and to continue to make products that Burt would be proud of.

Like these, The trio of products I received for review, Burt’s Bees classic Lip Balm in a new form, along with their newer endeavors, Sheer Body Lotion and Renewal Refining Cleanser.

First, the classic. Burt’s Bees Squeezable Beeswax Lip Balm ($4) is a perennial favorite of just about everyone. Besides the moisturizing beeswax, there is also Vitamin E and tingly peppermint. So what’s to add? How about the new squeezable container? The consistency is softer and smoother, melting across your lips like, well, like beeswax! As economical as effective, there is always room for a tube of this in your pocket/purse/glove compartment/nightstand.

Burt’s Bees Sheer Body Lotion ($10) is destined to become a staple on bathroom shelves and beach bags everywhere. Never have I experienced a product so sheer that has provided such softness! These lotions are available in three scents: Violet & Mango, Cucumber & Aloe, and Clementine & Calla Lilly. The scents are as sheer as the lotion, very noticeable at first, but quickly transparent.

Since I don’t like to attract summertime bees when I’m out and about this time of year, I avoid daytime scents or thickly perfumed lotions. I sampled the Clementine & Calla Lilly, which seems more floral upfront, with a sweet citrus coming through on the backend. The other scent I tried was the Cucumber & Aloe. I enjoyed the perceived coolness of the cucumber, as well as its faintly sweet scent, particularly after spending the day in the sun. These lotions are quickly absorbed and leave no greasy residue.

The one thing that I’m unsure about with all the Sheer Body Lotions is the spray pump bottle. The lotion is quite light, but it is also not quite a liquid. Repeated spritzes onto my body resulted in stray drops in my eyes and in my hair. It also clearly needs rubbed into the skin after application so I think a classic pump would be a better choice.

Overall, The Sheer Body Lotion is another fabulous product, moisturizing far better than I ever expected for such a light lotion.

The last product I tried was Burt’s Bees Renewal Refining Cleanser ($10). This was the one product for which I did not have high expectations. My face is very difficult to please and quite sensitive. This cleanser has the grit of a scrub and the creamy consistency of a rich moisturizer. For me, that’s usually not a good combination, with grit usually irritating my skin and rich moisturizers clogging my pores.

Amazingly this didn’t happen, likely because the cleanser is soap free and noncomedogenic. The cleanser is also infused with a Hibiscus and Apple Rejuvenation Complex that is shown to improve skin’s texture and smoothness. I even skipped a facial moisturizer—that’s one efficient face product!

My only negative is that the scent is a little wonky, with two strong scents (hibiscus and apple) competing for dominance. The scent doesn’t linger, so I’m fine with that.

With all this talk of nature, it’s also important to mention Burt’s Bees commitment to sustainability, offering mail-back recycling programs, responsible packaging and careful sourcing of ingredients. Sustainability reports are also available online. Also, 10% of the low purchase price of their products goes to The Burt’s Bees Greater Good Foundation. That’s good for everyone!

How exciting is it that companies like Burt’s Bees offer up naturally good-for-you products at bargain prices, and possess the commitment to honor and care for our planet? That’s a lot of goodness! Burt would be proud.

  1. Great review–I love Burt’s Bees. I have the spray lotion in the violet scent and I like it a lot, although I agree the spray nozzle is apt to get a little wild. I also have the refining cleanser; it’s a great product for the second step in oil cleansing, when I want to make sure my skin is clean as can be!

    1. The violet scent really intrigued me – I have a sugared violet scent from BPAL that I could bath in, I love so much (It’s Faith, and it was LE, sorry!)

And I’m not sure I can carry on until I have a squeezable Burt’s Bees lip balm.

  2. Yes @stef, this squeezable balm made me put down my fave Embroylisse! I didn’t think that ultra-smooth butteriness could be found elswehere. Yay squeeze tube!

  3. I had no idea Squeezable Beeswax Lip Balm existed! Tracking it down is now the #1 thing on my to-do list this weekend!

  4. Love me some Burt’s Bees! I have yet to use a product that left me disappointed. Current fave – coconut & pear lip balm.
