If you’re like me, you’ve been seeing all this talk about micellar waters. It’s one of the latest beauty trends and it’s like almost every major brand has something with the word “micellar” in it. Again, if you’re like me, you’ve probably uttered the phrase, “What IS micellar water?” Well, before I go any further, I’m going to break down the mystery of micellar water for you.

It’s basically teensy, tiny molecules of cleansing oil, called micelles, suspending in water. The idea is that these micelles attract dirt and impurities without drying, so micellar water is a great product for makeup removal, cleansing and moisturizing–all in one. It’s a multi-tasker, y’all. And you know how much we love a multi-tasker!

Fun fact: While it seems like the latest innovation, micellar water is actually a product that originated in France over a hundred years ago, before traditional plumbing and in deference to their harsh water. What was old is now new again.

Which brings us to our review of Nuxe Micellar Cleansing Water with Rose Petals ($20). As indicated on the label, this offering is good for sensitive skin types. Seeing as how I have extremely sensitive/breakout prone skin, I love when products cater to my skincare needs. The instructions are to simply apply the product with a cotton pad and that there is no need to rinse. I don’t think it gets easier than that.

First impression: micellar water does not feel like your standard water. As it has tiny beads of oil suspended in it, when I squeezed a little bit in my hand, it beaded up on my skin. When I rubbed it between my fingers, it felt very soft and moisturizing–it does not feel oily at all, but it doesn’t feel like your typical water, either. Nuxe Paris Micellar Cleansing Water contains rose petals (in the form of rose water), so you definitely get a rose scent. It’s mixed with another scent, though, that reminds me of artificial grape. I’m not really a fan of whatever they combined the rose fragrance with and I wish they’d kept it simple and subtle. Fragrance is the fourth ingredient on the label, which seems high in my opinion.

As a makeup remover, this fares well against most cosmetics. As the micelles attract dirt and impurities, it was kind of trippy seeing how the cotton pad soaked in micellar water kind of pulled the makeup off my face like a magnet–there was no streaking like I’d see with a typical makeup removing wipe. However, it struggled against anything I’d describe as long-wearing. It was no match for my Kat Von D liquid lipstick. It had some difficulty with my long-wearing eyeliners, too. It didn’t really do much against mascara. My sensitive skin is breakout prone, so I did feel like I had to wash my face after using this product when I used it as a makeup remover.

I found that this was best for cleaning my face after a hike or after the gym, when I’m not wearing much, if any, makeup. I hate letting the sweat sit on my face for too long, so this was good for tossing in my bag for a quick touch up after a workout. It was so refreshing and I felt so much cleaner after a few swipes of this cleansing water. I really love how baby soft it leaves my skin, with zero oily residue. And no breakouts, either!

I think Nuxe Paris Micellar Cleansing Water would be a solid addition to most skincare routines, especially for you sensitive-skinned gals.
