When it comes to skincare, I hope for miracles but don’t expect them. That way, when I encounter empty promises, I’m not too disappointed and when a brand really comes through, I’m surprised and delighted.
I am beyond delighted with The Better Skin Co., a relatively new entry in the world of carefully crafted skincare. The charming little company was launched in 2015 by aesthetician Natalya Rachkova, who emigrated from The Republic of Uzbekistan to Seattle, WA, and her business partner Murphy D. Bishop II. Rachkova came to America with secret skincare recipes and a dream of creating her own skincare line. Her signature cream was initially mixed up in her kitchen and marketed through word of mouth. Her friend Bishop, a beauty business veteran, helped Rachkova translate her homespun recipes into something that could be produced on a wider scale. Rachkova worked with a local artist to create packaging designs that mirrored the beautiful textiles of her home country.
I love the sort of earthy design and trippy spelling of Better Skin Company’s literature and packaging. It gives the vibe of a company that’s spending its money on the product and not on a flashy show designed to entice us. The products are enticement on their own.
The line’s signature item, Better Skin Mirakle Cream ($34 for 2oz), is a multi-tasking miracle indeed. Packaged in the cutest cloth drawstring bag (it’s a keeper!) featuring the design Rachkova commissioned, Mirakle Cream is the kind of all-purpose, fast-acting treatment cream that should have its own cult. In fact, I might start one!
The company calls this product its “genius in a jar,” and it really is a “smart” cream. It seems to know where my skin needs extra moisture, and it soothes dry spots as if by—yes—magic! It contains natural ingredients such as coconut oil, sea buckthorn, shea butter, cocoa butter, aloe, and soothing algae, all of which work as a team to soften and brighten skin. Peptides and hyaluronic acid act as powerful anti-agers.
Better Skin Lava Magik ($32 for 2oz) does triple duty as a daily cleanser, an exfoliating scrub and a soothing mask. French volcanic lava is combined with calendula, sweet orange and grapeseed oils, cucumber, parsley and chamomile to create a product that smells good enough to eat. You can use it to gently clean skin, or really scrub away on days when you need a little extra exfoliation. Leaving it on for a few minutes while breathing in its citrus scent is like a mini-spa treatment.
We also received their newest product Better Skin Zit No More ($18 for .2oz) which our editor Stef put to the test on a recent hormonal breakout.
The active ingredient is Salicylic Acid, a popular and powerful ingredient for zit annihilation. But we don’t hesitate to say the essential oils are what makes this product special. Tea Tree oil is the star, but there’s a backing line up of oils that share the bill: Rosehip fruit, Rapeseed and Rosewood oils, to be exact.
Stef reports it cleared up her flare-up in a flash, and didn’t leave the site dried out like a lot of other acne products do.
The Better Skin Company products are all paraben-free, gluten-free and vegan, and appropriate for all skin types. Using them is simple: apply generously, and let the products work their magic!
