I’m so excited that artisanal cocktails have really taken off in the past few years. There are tons of options of unique drinks to try, and fancy cocktail options just make imbibing so much more fun. The thing is, they can easily run well over $10 a pop (more if you live in a big city) and a nice cocktail shouldn’t only be reserved for a special occasion.

You work too hard to kick back with a mediocre drink. Thank goodness you don’t have to be a cocktail aficionado to craft fresh cocktails from the comfort of your own kitchen. It’s actually pretty darn simple.


The number one rule for artisanal cocktails is to use good ingredients, which means ditch the mixes and head to the produce aisle. Fresh produce and herbs do so much to brighten the flavor of a drink and make a world of difference from over-sweetened, artificially flavored cocktail mixes.

Also, do yourself a favor and get a halfway decent bottle of alcohol. You don’t have to go all out – as a matter of fact it’s considered sacrilege to mask the purity of alcohol from the highest echelons by mixing it in a cocktail – but at least look a little higher than the bottom shelf. You’ll notice a difference in both the flavor and the way you feel the next day – no matter how much you drink.

The artisanal cocktail recipe for today is the Raspmary Smash, a riff on the classic smash cocktail. It’s the perfect drink to celebrate summer produce, and you’ll be taking the edge off in no time! We’ll be learning a simple syrup recipe, and then the actual cocktail – let’s get started.

Raspmary Smash Cocktail


Rosemary Simple Syrup:
1/2 c sugar
1/2 c water
2-inch sprig of fresh rosemary

Raspmary Smash Cocktail:
8 large raspberries, washed
2 oz gin
1 oz fresh lime juice (approximately 1 small lime)
1 oz rosemary simple syrup
3 oz sparkling water/seltzer
2-inch sprig of fresh rosemary

Tip: If you prefer your drinks more sweet than tart, only use half an ounce of lime juice.

Rosemary Simple Syrup Directions:


1. Pour the sugar, water and rosemary into a small pot and heat on high, stirring constantly until sugar dissolves (approximately 3 minutes). The mixture will go from cloudy to clear once the sugar has dissolved. Turn off the heat and remove pot from the heat.

2. Let cool completely before taking out the rosemary and transferring the syrup to a glass jar. Do not leave the rosemary in the jar or the flavor will turn bitter over time. Simple syrup will keep for approximately two weeks in the refrigerator.

Raspmary Smash Cocktail Directions:


1. Muddle the raspberries in the bottom of a tall glass. If you do not have a muddler, just smash them as thoroughly into a pulp as possible.


2. Pour gin, rosemary simple syrup, lime juice and sparkling water on top of the raspberry pulp and give a light stir.

3. Fill a separate glass with ice. Using a cocktail strainer (or the edge of a large spoon if you don’t have a cocktail strainer), pour the liquid over the ice, filtering out the pulpy raspberry seeds.


4. Garnish with the second rosemary sprig, kick back, and enjoy.

Note: The ingredients constituting a smash are pretty loose, making it a great template to use for creating cocktails to fit your personal tastes. A smash must include seasonal fruit, an herb, ice, a spirit (of course!) and some seltzer. So get creative and have a smashing good time!

  1. This looks very thirst quenching after a long hard day! I have a rosemary plant in my herb spiral. It is time to take some cuttings and have drinks.

  2. This looks so delicious and refreshing–definitely a must make! I’ve always wanted to try lavender in an herb-y cocktail; maybe with a vanilla simply syrup?

    1. @amity that would be delish! If you want to make lavender simple syrup wait to put the lavender in the syrup until you turn off the heat – it can get very strong and bitter in too high of heat.

  3. Yeah!! I’m making this.. but just need some good Gin.. I have plenty of vodka and think that may work or even some decent rum would work with this. I love lavender too so I’m getting ideas to make a nice lofty beverage soon!
