Don’t you just love when something is aptly named? To know immediately what’s in store? Much like you trust when you slip on a Snuggie that you’re going to feel all snuggly, Benefit Velvet Eyeshadows tell you right up front what you’re in for – a shadow that you just may mistake for velvet.

It’s no secret that we’re a bit sweet on Benefit around these parts. How could we not be? Great packaging with a retro nod, cheekily named products, and best of all- amazing quality. Well, you can check off all of those points for their Velvet eyeshadows ($18). Like the see-thru, bird adorned cases. Love the amount of pigmentation (a lot!) But I literally want to marry the texture. Seriously, where have these been all my life?

These shadows feel like they melt into your skin, rather than sit on top of them. The shimmer becoming a part of your eyelid, rather than covering it. These are powder shadows that wear like a cream (minus the tell-tale sign of a cream; creasing!) So, so good.

(Top: Bo Peep, Bikini Line, Shamrocker. Bottom: Nice Melons, Where There’s Smoke)

They’ve got quite a few shades in the collection, but there are also six vibrant, limited edition shades for Spring. Of which we got to test: Bo Peep (a, light and shimmery lily pink), Shamrocker (a pastel, iced mint) and Nice Melons (a gold-flecked coral. Tee hee, I said melons.)

We also got to test two shades in the permanent line up: Bikini Line (a sweet, sandy gold) and Where There’s Smoke (which has quickly entered into my taupe hall of fame).

Pick up the Limited edition shades at Benefit or the permanent line at Sephora. Your eyelids will thank you.

  1. Oooh, Where’s the Smoke has me weak in the knees! The question I must ask myself is- Do I need another shimmery silver/grey eyeshadow? No one ever said the answer would be easy…

  2. I’ll second that, Amanda– Where There’s Smoke looks like a color I could wear every day.

@Stef, I can’t wait to check these colors out in person. Limited edition? Guess I’d better hurry!

  3. I have always loved Benefit, and I especially love their fun collections (I still covet the brown eyeshadow I have from their Cowgirl Collection from years ago). So when I saw that I had received Shamrocker (a pretty mint pastel green) from this new collection I was SO excited. I mean, what’s not to love? A gorgeous, on-trend shade of eyeshadow encased in one of the prettiest packages I’ve ever seen.

But sadly, this one was a bit tricky for me. First, I learned quickly that I can’t apply this with my normal eyeshadow brush. With a brush, I experienced a good amount of fallout on my cheeks because this shade is uber-sparkly. So if you get Shamrocker, try applying it with a sponge-tip applicator. It’s a lifesaver.

Second, I totally agree with Stef that this shadow melts into your skin. It’s super soft and I would consider Shamrocker as more of a wash than a traditional eyeshadow. It’s very sheer, which isn’t a bad thing if you’re looking for a soft eye look. BUT, on my skin, I could barely see this shade after I applied it, which made me sad because this shade would be so pretty for springtime.

So my suggestions are: apply Shamrocker with a sponge-tip applicator, and use it for a lovely, sheer wash of iridescent color. If you do these two things, I think you won’t be disappointed.

I am going to try layering Shamrocker over a darker shade (maybe a matte black) because I bet it will add a beautiful dimension to some of my existing eyeshadows.

  4. @turboterp, @mandaleem – Oh, you so need Where there’s Smoke! I LOVE this shadow. It’s everything I look for in a taupe, that perfect “greige” (grey + beige = fabulous!) It’s very similar to Stila Diamond Lil, but the buttery formula of these shadows takes it just a notch higher on the ultimate taupe scale.

@nouveaucheap – I’m sorry to hear the pigmentation isn’t as rich on Shamrocker. It’s super rich on the darker shades. But I love your idea of adding it to a black. These work really well over cream shadows too, like a setting powder.

Love these, and have my eye firmly cast on Bikini Line (I have a weakness for golds!)

  5. I was super excited when I pulled Bo Peep out, the package is adorable. I’m a bit obsessed with birds so this case of eye shadow had me at hello. The shadow itself is such a pretty purple/pink with just a hint of shimmer. Perfect for Spring. I thought it would even go with my UD Crush eyeliner.

But sadly, I have to agree with @nouveaucheap, it’s too sheer, I couldn’t see it on my eyelid, even when I put a primer on Bo Peep was not showing up. I have been using it more as a highlighter along my brow line and in the corner of my eyes, which is nice. I just wish there was more pigment in it so I could wear it as an all over shadow. I do like the idea to try it on top of a darker shadow. That might make some of my grays and purples pop more and look more like spring colors.

  6. @tiffany, you won’t be disappointed by Bikini Line! That’s the one I got to test, and I love it!! It’s the perfect base, highlighter, and all-over shadow. I’ve been wearing it almost every day since it arrived, whether it’s paired with another shadow or alone. I actually wear it alone mostly lately – it’s a perfect brightener for the eyes. It has a beautiful shimmer. I layer it on top of my black liquid eyeliner and it gives a beautiful pop of shimmer. It has great staying power and does NOT hang in the creases, even though it is silky smooth. This is a definite 5 star for me!!

  7. Nice Melons! (Intense giggling – it makes me laugh every time I look at the back of the package!). I love the gold-flecked peach–it’s an awesome everyday, all over color that really wakes up your face. Plus, it double as a good highlighter in your night-time looks

I concur with @Stef. The texture is dreamy. I just might marry it!
