Plus 4 steps to a light retro makeup look – perfect for spring!

photos: we heart this

Be it a pair of rhinestone earrings, or a head to toe look including pin curls and kitten heels – there’s something vintage happening on me everyday. I know I’m not alone. I’ve seen liberty rolls, cat eyes and red lips all over the NYFW runways.

But with spring just around the corner, us retro gals like to lighten up a bit. Because unless you’re Dita Von Teese, it can be a little much for an easy, breezy sort of day. Here’s how you (and I) can still rock a vintage makeup vibe.

See? Vintage light!

4 simple steps for what I call vintage light, perfect for spring:

1. Ditch the black and reach for brown eye liner for that cat eye. All the impact without the harshness.

2. Full false lashes can be a bit too much drama sometimes. But individual lashes placed just at the outer ends will give you a light, flirty look.

3. A bright pink blush, concentrated on the apples of your cheeks, is perfect for a spring day and gives you a vintage kewpie doll look.

4. Lipstick can feel a bit heavy, so a sheer, shiny red gloss completes the look. And have I got a sweet one for you…

Literally sweet too! Covergirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm smells like an updated version of the lip balms of my youth. The mango and shea butters not only add a sweet/tart scent, but moisturizing properties that make your lips feel amazing.

Add to that SPF 15, and the fabulous sheer red I found within the tube of the shade Anemone, and I’ve got a balm that hasn’t left my purse since its arrival (a hard handled 50s patent leather purse, of course).

Want to see so for yourself? You can pick up this shade and other Covergirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balms at the Amazon Store.

Till then, see you Dolls later!

Has anyone tried Covergirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm yet? What did you think?

Get the sheer color and shine of a gloss with the soft, lightweight feel of SPF 15 balm. Fortified with mango and shea butter, this feel-good formula leaves your lips feeling decadent and delicious.

  1. I am loving your retro vibe, @Stef! I have been rocking some red lips lately which always remind me of the classier days gone by!
This gloss sounds fab and right about now, I need extra moisture on the lips. I will be picking one of these Covergirl balms up pronto.

  2. I love, love this look @stef !! Nobody does vintage better than you do. I am for sure going to give these tips a try. I will especially pick up a tube of this new Cover Girl Gloss. It is so pretty!! It seems like a really easy way to do a red lip.

  3. @stef –VA VA VOOM!!! Thanks so much for breaking this look down so it is accessible for all of us. I love that lip color. Covergirl is affordable, you can find it anywhere makeup is sold and has SPF!! What more can a girl want?

Confession: I am very good about mixing my sunscreen in with my moisturizer in the morning and even reapplying sunscreen on my face when needed. However, I often forget about my lips. REMINDER to self: lips need sun protection too!

    1. Good for you for being good about SPF at least with your skin! I’m terrible about SPF period, so I’m always happy to sneak it when I can.

Thanks for the nice words @hao9703

  4. So pretty, and affordable! I love posts like this because it remind me that a retro look doesn’t need to be overt; it can be lovely and subtle. Thanks, @stef, you look great! :-)

  8. Beautiful hair, shirt (color and bows!), eyes, lips – wow, the whole package! Love the brown liner idea, too – and I’m in the market for a new red gloss too – I would not have gone to the drugstore to pick one up before…but now I am!

  12. You look fabulous, and I totally agree about the Covergirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm! I got Anemone too, and it has not left MY purse, either! But I have also succumbed to Coral, (which is TOTALLY amazing, btw) Peony, and Hibiscus. (not to mention backups of Anemone and Coral…)
    I LOVE them!
Now let’s talk about that marvelous sweater you’re wearing in these pix- it’s gorgeous.
    So Spring-y!

  13. @stef – I love your retro waves! I’m jealous about the $5 cashmere. I never find anything that cute at thrift stores. I find things like Billy Ray Cyrus Achy Breaky t-shirts or things someone probably died in. *sad clown*
I have that Anemone shade, too, and I love it–it really brightens my face.
I think my favorite Covergirl NatureLuxe Gloss Balm is the Pinot shade–it’s a perfect shimmery rose color. It also smells like cherries. I have a few of these and only a couple have the cherry smell, which is weird to me :/
