A New Secret Weapon Targets Balm Addicts
I am a balm girl. Lip balm, that is. I use it obsessively on non-lipstick days at the beach. I use it to prep my lips before applying lipstick. I never have less than seven in cups, pockets, lockers or purses: some tinted, some flavored, some medicinal.
It’s not that I even have dry lips. I’m not prone to chapping and I live in a mild climate. I was born to balm; from the time I was old enough to eat a tube of Dr. Pepper Lip Smackers to the present day. The reason for it is obvious: we all want soft, youthful, kissable lips. But I have Breaking News! I just learned that I can put the balm down. Dermalogica Nightly Lip Treatment has made balm old news (with every $49 tube.)
As we age, or—if you’re smart—before it, we moisturize. We have light daytime moisturizers, and thick, nighttime ones. This isn’t news. For some reason, though, we don’t think to moisturize the skin on and around our lips differently than the rest of our face. We balm, which essentially forms a protective barrier, but we don’t moisturize. We have specialized eye treatments targeted to those special wrinkles, but not the particular ones around the mouth. The lips and the skin around the mouth are always neglected, clearly the redheaded stepchild of the eyes and face.
Dermalogica is encouraging us to be “smart-mouthed’ and treat your lips, laugh lines and vertical lines with one product. Nightly Lip Treatment is housed in a pump dispenser with a cool, smooth metal applicator that deposits product in a dreamy, spa-like fashion.
The application process is easy-peasy: simply dispense the product on and above the lips, then rub in with the metal applicator. It feels delightful, and the fact that your aren’t using your fingers makes it sterile, too. All that’s left is to go to bed and sleep your rough lips, pucker and laugh lines away!
The scent is subtle and kind of spearmint-y. Some of the natural ingredients are Indian Gentian Extract and Sesame Seed Extract for volume and Shea Butter for hydration. I love this combination.
Dermalogica Nightly Lip Treatment claims to reduce the appearance of fine feather lines and wrinkles and restore skin volume on and around the lips, as well as hydrate and improve the elasticity of the skin while creating a barrier against the visible signs of aging. From my experience, it does these pretty well. I do feel my skin is plumper and those little feather lines are diminished. I haven’t even grabbed a balm since I’ve been using this. Considering that I reach for balm instinctively, that’s an amazing feat!
Now, if only Dermalogica could invent something for my lingering cookie and chip habit…
we heartsters, have you been guilty of neglecting the skin around your kisser? Have you relied on balms to do it all?
