Valentine’s Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. Sure, I know technically you shouldn’t need a holiday to shower someone with your love, but who am I to complain if my husband feels inclined to buy me a few romantic gifts? On a typical Valentine’s Day, I come home to some chocolate covered strawberries, a bottle of red wine, a nice dinner, and last but not least…red roses. Believe it or not, I always try to convince my husband to forgo the roses on Valentine’s Day. I hate that he pays way too much for flowers that usually last less than a week. I’m a practical girl and would rather have a gift that would last much, much longer.

Luckily, this year I’ve found the perfect alternative to an overpriced dozen of red roses; Jo Malone’s Red Roses Fragrance Chronicle ($95). What is a fragrance chronicle you ask? Jo Malone, know for the philosophy of fragrance combining, makes it easy for you to create your own signature scent by combining her Red Roses fragrance with three accompanying accords packaged in an adorable story book gift box. The Red Roses Fragrance Chronicle comes with a 30 ml bottle of the Red Roses Cologne and a 9 ml bottle of each of the following accords: Moroccan Mint Leaf, Ice Rose, and Honeycomb. You choose the fragrances to blend together depending on your mood or occasion to create your own custom scent.

Now I know many people out there are thinking “rose fragrances just aren’t my cup of tea”. Let me start of by saying, this isn’t your grandma’s rose perfume. Jo Malone’s Red Rose fragrance is composed of seven of the world’s most expensive types of roses. It’s fresh and sexy and actually smells like a bouquet of freshly cut flowers. Blended with the accompanying accords, the red rose fragrance becomes something even more special. It’s amazing how different each blend smells. Right now, my favorite combination is Red Rose mixed with the spicy Moroccan Mint Leaf, but I haven’t found a combination that I didn’t like out of this set. Talk about getting your money’s worth, this story book collection is sure to last long past a real dozen of roses. Do yourself a favor and talk your loved one into treating you to a new kind of rose this Valentine’s Day. You won’t regret it!

We only got a couple of these. Did the lucky review team members who got to try this fall in love at first sniff? Let us know!

  1. i was not one of the lucky members to try this (i have more then enough perfume at the moment and it doesn’t even work on me) but i did see it in person. Everything about it is beautiful, the packaging, the scents, everything. It actually has a few different ones if i remember correctly. if anyone out there is a perfume/Jo Malone fan i would print this page out and leave it as a hint for anyone you think might be buying you something for Valentines or for anything!

  2. I was not either, but let me just say I love the idea.. Chronicles of anything good has my attention! So, I will march down to the lovely Jo Malone boutique and see it in person! I happen to like Rose – and will chime in after I sample for myself.

  3. I LOVE everything Jo Malone! I’m not a big rose perfume fan, but the way you describe this Tiff makes me want to try it badly!! Plus, I’ve never heard of the scents that come with it to mix – those sound divine!! The names alone make me want them for my collection ~ Ice Rose and Moroccan Mint…mmmmm!

  4. I got the chance to smell this, but only after not taking one for myself as I’m not a rose perfume fan. Of course, the minute I sniffed I realized my big mistake! As Tiffany mentions above, this is not your mother’s rose perfume. The Red Roses scent itself is incredible. If you closed your eyes and smelled, you’d think you had a big bouquet in front of you. But it’s the combinations that really made it into something that I was envying! The Moroccan Mint Leaf is so amazing, so fresh! And the Honeycomb is warm and delicious. You can wear a different scent everytime because of all the combos you can custom make. Love Jo Malone for that!

This would be such an incredible gift. I agree with Winnie, print this out as a not so subtle hint. I’m all for a little direction!

  5. I was the other super lucky tester that got to test out the Rose Chronicles! As mentioned, like every Jo Malone product, the packaging is so lovely and well thought out. This set consists of four, square-ish bottles filled with the incredible JM fragrances. I am a big rose fan, and this scent, Red Roses is the best I’ve ever experienced. As everyone who has smelled this will tell you, close your eyes and breathe in, and your mind will be tricked into thinking you are smelling a fresh rose. It’s a pure, natural scent with nothing synthetic or saccharine sweet.
Top that off with three scents to mix and match with the Red Roses and we have one amazing collection! My favorite mixture at the moment is the Honeycomb and Rose –it adds a green, forest-y scent that I really like. But, I also love the Moroccan Mint Leaf combo (and the mint on it’s own is nice as well) and the Ice Rose scent.

The best thing about this set is that it is goof-proof. I always love the idea of layering scents but get paralyzed trying to mix scents together – it’s hard for me to pick things that will combine well. The beauty of the Rose Chronicles is that work has been done for you – mix and match at will (or use just one scent) and never worry about contrasting scents or one overpowering the other. If you love flowers, especially Roses, this would be such a great Valentine’s gift! You can enjoy the scent of fresh cut roses for years and never have to throw away a wilting bouquet.

  6. Oh, I just read on their website that Red Roses, in addition to the 7 rose scents, contains “crushed violet leaves and hints of lemon and spearmint.”

    YUM!!!

  7. What does Ice Rose smell like? When you combine it with the regular rose, is it a little too rosy?

  8. This set really is a great bargain when you consider how many scent combinations you can make. I was amazed at how different the combinations smelled. It is truly like getting at least seven different perfumes since each one can be worn individually as well.

Melinda the ice rose is described as being reminiscent of the delicate scent of flowers in the morning dew. It adds a freshness to the scent that is hard to explain. It probably changes the Red Rose scent the least of the three, but makes it smell even more like fresh roses if you can imagine.

Another plus about this set is the scents don’t wear off quickly. They last through out the day and you won’t need to reapply.

I would love to smell the other Fragrance Chronicles and am so jealous that some of you can just run down to a Jo Malone store. I so wish we had one where I live. This set gets 5 stars from me!

  9. Oooohhh… I love the scent of roses but, as many have said, rose perfumes never smell like actual roses. I’ve always thought that roses smell a little bit like raspberries! I’m going to have to find and smell this!!

  10. The Ice Rose is hard to explain. Here’s my best effort – adding the Ice Rose makes the rose scent even purer, but kind of softens the scent overall – does that make ANY sense?!

And, I want to chime in that these scents last and last – never overpowering they just linger on the skin all day. I love Jo Malone!

Ooo, I wonder where I could smell this! I love the idea of a REAL rose scent, especially if you can mix it with other scents . . .
