I’ve known for a while now that Vitamin C isn’t only good for staving off colds and scurvy. Pure Vitamin C is a big-time antioxidant with powerful skin protection. That same Vitamin C you take in a pill or in your OJ to protect your body internally, also can be applied topically to protect your body externally. It seems only natural to look to one of the oldest and most trusted names in skin care, Kiehl’s, for a good, reliable Vitamin C concentrate.

Kiehl’s made a name for itself as an apothecary in New York City (that “since 1851” on its labels is legit). There they made their own concoctions of teas, herbs, tinctures and scents. They proudly introduced the “try before you buy” sampling that is ubiquitous and expected in today’s market. Kiehl’s also listed all of the ingredients of its products on the label, many years before it became legally necessary. All of this was to build a trust and relationship with the consumer that has lasted over a hundred years.

Over the years, science and the beauty industry has expanded exponentially, and Kiehl’s has kept up the pace, somehow maintaining its simplicity while staying on top of things scientifically.

Case in point is the Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate ($65 for 50 ml), containing potent amounts of pure Vitamin C (10.5%), Ascorbyl Glucoside and Hyaluronic Acid (a major skin plumper). That’s a lot of bang in this concentrate.

So, how does it work? Overall, I am pleased with my results. After using the concentrate regularly for a couple of weeks, my skin does appear plumper and generally of better texture. The smooth, rich formula applies easily and smells bright and citrusy.

The product does say that it is “carefully formulated for all skin types, even sensitive skin.” My rosacea-prone skin is increasingly sensitive these past couple of years, and I did have a minimal reaction upon initial application. The concentrate stung and did cause some redness at first. These both quickly dissipated, ultimately revealing softer, smoother skin. To this I’m going to apply my mother’s logic of “if you can feel it, it’s working.” My mother is not a doctor, just an 88 year-old sage.

This concentrate also contains Dimethicone and Polysilicone-11. Usually my skin reacts poorly to any silicones, as they tend to clog my pores. This has not been the case for me so far, and because it promises to reduce the appearance of my pores in 8 weeks, I’m definitely going to stick it out-because, you know, I trust this brand.

If you’re ever in NYC, the original Kiehl’s location in the East Village is like a trip back in time. I always spend way too much there, but I’m never disappointed.
