5 Must Have Looks in the Altuzarra for Target collection

One of my favorite harbingers of fall is quickly approaching: another designer collaboration at Target! This time around, we’re being graced with the presence of Joseph Altuzarra, a designer renowned for clean, architectural lines and striking colors.
Altuzarra’s fashion resume is impressive, y’all – before launching his own line in 2008, he freelanced for Proenza Schouler and assisted Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci. And in 2011, he won the fancy-pants CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize. Capping it all off, he also took home the 2014 CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Award.
Celebs like Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain are fans, and I can actually see Lawrence picking up some of these Target collab pieces—because a) there truly are some standout items in this line and b) Lawrence just seems low key enough to hit up Target, right?
If you’d like a gorgeous statement piece that’s actually affordable, then you’ll want to check out the Altuzarra for Target collection. There’s a diverse range here – everything from printed sweatshirts to sleek suits. There’s even a lace sleep mask that is perfectly—ridiculously—louche and glamorous. So without further ado, let’s take a look at 5 must haves from this collection:
1. The “It’s-so-vintage-Mick-Jagger-that-I’ve-died-and-gone-to-heaven”suit:
You guys, feast your eyes on this scarlet stunner – a ruby red velvet blazer with matching ankle-length tuxedo pants. It’s not going to be for everyone, but for those of us with a predilection towards grungy rocker-glam, it’s a dream come true.
You could definitely stalk a stage in this, or at least look cool while knocking back a neat whiskey at your favorite watering hole. As a bonus, if you happen to run into Mr. Jagger, I’m like 90% certain that he’d totally compliment your style.
2. The “Just-wanna-to-lounge-around-and-be-fed-grapes-while-looking-sultry-and-mysterious” sleep-set:
Clearly, this satin cami and matching tap shorts are a sleek and glam upgrade to ratty pajamas. The set itself is sexy and pretty, while still offering coverage. But the thing that absolutely cinches this for me is the aforementioned lace sleep mask (it’s included with the cami set!).
It’s completely over the top in the best possible way; you can wake up in the morning, pretend you are the Countess of a dark and mysterious kingdom, and immediately demand espresso and diamonds from your devoted minions. That’s what I’m planning, anyway.
3. The “Need-to-make-a-grand-entrance-and-still-be-totally-comfortable” gown:
This black orchid print maxi dress is kind of breathtaking, no? It’s a shining ebony column, accented by a spray of the most gorgeous, O’Keefian white orchids.
With such a bold print, you can get away with minimal jewelry, and a simple up-do would be so pretty with the plunging neckline. I also feel like you could actually eat in this dress without Spanx, thanks to the gentle ruching at the waist—canapé camouflage, guys.
4. The “I-run-this place-like-a-total-boss” suit:
If you want to have that “I got the power” feeling (sung C & C Music Factory style, obviously), you may need to slither on up to this python print suit. The sharp lines of the blazer are arresting for sure, but check out what’s underneath…
…that’s not a separate shirt and skirt, but rather a one-piece dress. Can power suiting get any easier? It’s bold without being too over the top; I’d wear this to head up a corporate takeover, but I’d make sure everyone got really nice severance packages.
5. The “How-to-Netflix-binge-while-working-on-your-night-cheese-and-still-manage-to-look-like-a-chic-off-duty-ballerina” sweater:
I mean, I don’t think I’m alone in my occasional night cheese and Netflixing bouts. Problem is, I don’t want to look like a complete slob while doing so. This black sweater, graced by embroidered golden cranes at the shoulders, might just be the solution to this serious problem.
You can slouch the neckline down for that effortless dancer looker; add some leggings and bam—you are now like the perfect combo of Liz Lemon and a Prima Ballerina Assoluta (that’s way fancier than a regular Prima ballerina, so good on you). And of course, when you are ready to leave the house, you can dress it up with a pencil skirt and ankle booties.
The Joseph Altuzarra for Target line debuts on September 14th, at selected Target stores and at Target.com. If you’d like to see the entire collection, check out the lookbook.
we heartsters – Any pieces grabbing you? And what has been your favorite Target designer collab so far?

Amity writes and teaches in Central PA. Her obsessions include: Rodarte (she can’t afford any Rodarte, mind you, but a girl can dream), espresso, books, vintage/thrift fashion and fountain pens. She thinks you should dress like a weirdo once in a while, just to shake things up.
skin tone: NC15
skin type: Combination
favorite beauty product: felt-tipped eyeliners
Yay! I love these Target collaborations. And this post cracked me up – love all of your situations for wearing the outfits! Have to admit I am not so familiar with this designer – but I do like the clothes! So far – after checking the look book too – I am digging the colors and cuts of this line. And that sweater in your last pick is fabulous. I’ll be trying to get my hands on it on the 14th. May even brave a trip to my local Target that morning to see these in person.
Yeah, this line is really interesting–I didn’t even touch on the black fuzzy jacket, which I’m pretty sure is made of Muppet fur. Get that sweater, girl!
You are a mind reader! I have been thinking what is next for fall and what do I need to add to make things more “current.” The Crane sweater is the thing that I can most relate to. I like that it could be versatile for work or plat.
Yay, glad this could help. Even though some of the looks are kind of out there in this line, there are definitely colors and cuts to take as inspiration. A touch of python, like a scarf, if you can’t deal with a whole suit; the ruby shade of the velvet suit, etc. The crane sweater is perfect all on its own, though. Happy musing and shopping!
I LOVE this collection. The updated 70s vibe is just so perfect. I’m in love with the red suit and the crane sweater, plus the over the knee boots and the 2 luxe hippie-looking dresses. I think I’ll be stalking the Target site Sept. 13th at midnight, like I did for Phllip Lim!
I’m pretty sure there is gonna be a bunch of weheartsters walking around in that crane sweater! And I’m torn on the boots–I LOVE the photo of them on their own, but on the model they do that weird scrunching thing that I hate. If they have those at my local store, I’m definitely gonna try them on and see what’s up.
Even your fashion recaps make me laugh, @amity ! I LOVE that #1 velvet number. Ooh, and the cami set, too. This collection is going to be trouble. Thanks for the heads up!
Thanks! And sorry for inducing any reckless acts of shopping.
