This Green Monday look to the sea for natural skin care solutions

Astara Exfoliating Marine Treatment review photos: we heart this

Common sense is your friend. I think this after every bad decision I ever make: the extra cookie, the cheap haircut, the fourth martini. Skin care is common sense too, and this leads me to Astara Skincare.

Like many of you, I’ve tried skin care products cheap, I’ve tried products expensive. Every once in a while, simple and affordable trump complex and costly. We don’t always need sea minerals expensively harvested by hand before dawn with the aid of military night vision goggles. Generally, healthy and natural do not mean expensive; and this Green Monday we’ll see why Astara is a great example of that belief.

Former supermodel and septuagenarian Sunny Griffin is Asata’s founder. Her marriage of raw food diet (not heated above 105 degrees F) with skincare (“If you wouldn’t want to eat it, why would you smear it on your face.”) makes sense. Introduced to the their array of amazing masks earlier, Astara is a wht favorite because it’s good, it’s green and it works.

Today, I add another great, green product to the list of Astara favorites: Exfoliating Marine Treatment.

Say “sea minerals” and it’s over for me. I love the sea licking my face, leaving it soft and clear to… tighten in the sun. Boo sun. Bad sun.

Fear not, Astara’s Exfoliating Marine Treatment ($34) gives you the best of the sea (antioxidants, compliments of the seaweed) along with lactic and glycolic acids to encourage cell renewal. Plus there’s some aloe as well to hydrate and calm your skin, while Glucosamine is on hand to help renew those cells by attracting water. Crashing waves, sunburn, seagulls and sand between your toes not included.

But, if you really want to spend your day at the beach, be forewarned: Alpha Hydroxy Acids do increase skin sensitivity making skin burn easier, so, as with all AHA products, limit your sun exposure when using this product. I suggest using this treatment at night to lessen this possibility — I did, and my sensitive skin didn’t balk.

In the evening, after your normal routine of cleansing and toning, apply a few drops of the Exfoliating Marine Treatment to the face in a thin layer for two to ten minutes. A quick rinse will leave your skin feeling softer and smoother.

I’ve left this on all night without rinsing (I’ve always been of that stubborn mindset “If a little is good, more is better”) and my skin is no more or less sensitive. Neither is my skin softer or better for the extra time. My unofficial, unschooled, unmedical opinion on this is: though five or ten minutes is fine, it’s better to leave on too long than wash off too soon. My skin looks great.

This treatment is extraordinary for smoothing and softening the skin as well as reducing redness (my biggest problem). Finally, an exfoliating product that is effective, affordable and (like all Astara products) mostly natural!

Pros:
Profound difference in skin texture and tone
Virtually eliminates redness
Very reasonable price
Mostly Natural

Cons:
Plastic-y smell that dissipates quickly

  1. I truly love the Astara Cleanser. So I will absolutely check this one out. Great review!!

  2. I’m so impressed with everything I’ve tried from Astara , and this sounds like the best of the best. This goes on my must-try list, @sherrishera !

  3. @sherrishera –great run down of this intruging product. I cannot wait to hear from the tester to see what their experience has been.

  4. I love this treatment. I feel like it helped my skin in every way. It does seem expensive for the size of the bottle, but one pump goes a long way. It’s definitely a treatment–use it now and then, but probably not every night. My skin is super resistant and stubborn, so I left it on for the full 10 minutes and used it daily for awhile. I’ve also left it on longer without any harm done. If you have any cuts on your skin, it’ll sting like HECK when you first apply it though! If you have sensitive skin, I don’t think that I would recommend it. But for all others, I’d recommend it–just start slow and then add on time to make sure your skin can handle it. Five stars :)

  5. I received Astara’s Exfoliating Marine Treatment in the mail, and I must admit- I’m feeling kinda mixed about it. On one hand I LOVE it. It’s such a great little treat for myself. Extremely affordable, all natural, and my skin feels great when I’m done. On the other hand I’m not sure how “exfoliating” it is as I don’t see much of a change in the texture of my skin. In fact, I don’t see much of a change at all other than the fact that my skin tone seems a bit brighter, which is no small feat in the dead of winter!
Over all it’s a great treat that I enjoy, taking those 10mins of quiet in the bathroom (the only room I get any peace in, haha!). The environmentally friendly nature of all the Astara products adds to my feel-good feelings, so it’s basically win win. I’d give it 3.5 stars over all, lessened for the slightly less-than-amazing results I’ve had, but we’ll round up to 4 stars because I just *like it* that much.

    1. I’m kind of with you on the 3 1/2 stars rounding up to 4. This is a good, solid product with decent results. I do think my skin was much smoother and less red but I’ve fallen in love with another (albeit more expensive ) product that does all that and more (see Dermadoctor). This is kind of like mock lobster–it will work perfectly well when I can’t afford the other. The natural thing gets a big star, too. 4 stars.

  6. I received Astars’s Exfoliating Marine Treatment and I’d love to sing it’s praises!
I tend to be on the sensitive side, but this peel was effective without any itching or redness. I left the treatment on the for reccomended time, and then like @Sherrishera, I left it on overnight with no ill effects.
My skin was left smoother with a more even color. I am not sure whether it helps with breakouts, but I will say yes. This is a great product and the fact that it is mostly natural, is an added bonus!
    5 solid stars for me!

  7. I had the pleasure of testing Astara’s Marine Treatment as well and I really am impressed. Glycolic Acid is so important for cell turnover, especially in the winter months when my face seems to collect excess dry skin. This product was gentle enough that it didn’t bother my sensitive skin and super effective in taking away those dry patches on my nose and sides of nose, as well as evening out my skin. I also love that it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg to get a good exfoliator. I give this a high four stars and would definitely buy it again!
