It always amazes me when a person is able to take something terrible and create beauty from it. In the case of Violets Are Blue skincare, founder Cynthia Besteman did this literally. After a diagnosis of breast cancer in 2011, Besteman took her own experience and used it as a springboard for the creation of her natural, organic, truly soothing skincare line.

During treatment, Besteman started paying attention to the products she used and the way they were labeled. After she realized that “organic” or “natural” did not mean free of parabens, sulfates or other potentially cancer-causing chemicals, Besteman began crafting her own products.

Violets Are Blue was officially launched in 2013. Besteman says it best: “We operate under the philosophy that skincare does not have to be complicated; in fact, keeping it simple is best.”

This philosophy extends to the product packaging. Even though sunlight makes flowers grow, it also causes essential oils and herbal extracts (and products containing them) to decay. The Miron Violet glass used for the packaging blocks the spectrum of damaging light to assure long-lasting products without use of scary chemical preservatives. The bottles are lovely and reusable, too!

I sampled a selection of Violets Are Blue’s Signature Line…

Facial Cleanser

Facial Cleanser ($35 for 30ml) – Just 2-3 drops of this creamy wash gently cleanses the face. The blend of White Tea, Carrot Seed and Evening Primrose is extremely gentle and smells lightly floral. Appropriate for all skin types, but very dry skin would benefit the most from its non-foaming formula.

Facial Serum

Facial Serum ($48 for 20ml) – This serum blends Evening Primrose, Argan, Rosehip Oil, Jojoba, and other essential oils like Carrot Seed and Lavender into a very potent, concentrated formula. Just a few small drops are enough to treat face and neck. The scent is herbal.

Facial Scrub

Facial Scrub ($36 for 3oz) – Unlike the super-gentle cleanser and serum, the scrub is the muscle of the Signature Line! A blend of Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Almonds, Calendula, and Oatmeal packs a lot of exfoliating power. If your face is too sensitive for all this abrasion, the Facial Scrub would be great as a body exfoliator. Recommended for use once or twice a week.

Body Cream ($48 for 6oz) – I saved the best for last. Lavender is way down on the ingredient list of this rich, moisturizing butter, but the scent is undeniable. For this reason, I’ve been using the cream on my hands and elbows before bed, when the calming scent helps me fall asleep.

Designed to treat inflammation, stretch marks and cracked skin, the cream contains moisturizing butters like Shea and Kokum, and nourishing oils like Sweet Almond and Argan. I’m so happy to report that a little goes a long way.

Safe for the body, safe for the environment, and soothing for the soul, Violets Are Blue Skincare is proof that “simple” is a beautiful concept.

  1. I’m really intrigued by the White Tea & Carrot Seed facial cleanser, mostly because I LOVE the smell of white tea in beauty products. Great post, @turboterp! :D
