Life – and Lips – are a Cabaret!

OCC lip tar

I started the summer smitten with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmeticsicon Stained Gloss Lip Tar, and now I realize this wasn’t just a fleeting summertime romance. OCC’s fall release, Moderncrafticon, has reignited the love in my heart with this collection that includes six “boldly decadent new shades” in all three categories of Lip Tar: Matte, Metallic and Stained Gloss.

Occ Sebastain lip tar

Inspired by the moody drama of the arts and culture of 1920s Weimar era Berlin (think Cabaret, old chum), Moderncraft brings us tools to reinterpret this classic look in a very modern way.

Each Moderncraft Lip Taricon ($18) includes OCC’s #010S Short Handled Professional Lip Brush, the perfect tool for applying the pea-sized pearl of product it takes to cover both lips (this still amazes me). One tube of Lip Tar seems to last forever because it takes so little of it to create the perfect lip.

I tested four of the six new Moderncraft shades:

Mein Herr – pale glossy nude (Stained Gloss)
I can’t describe this better than OCC’s “transparent neutrality.” Mein Herr is a creamy, milky beige in the tube, and glossy perfection on my lips. Of course, it’s not as long-lasting as traditional Lip Tar, but who cares when it looks this good?

Sebastian – pale plummy taupe (Matte)
This is Lip Tar for the risk-taker. More mauve than taupe on my lips, Sebastian is packed full of pigment and drama. I thought it would be too light or too purple, but it’s stunning, different, and surprisingly wearable. I got a lot of double-takes (mostly in a good way) when I wore it.

OCC Anita lip tar swatch

Anita – dark and vampy red brown (Matte)

Black Metal Dahlia – dark berry red with red pearl (Metallic), billed as “seductively dark and industrial”

Role Play – bright yet dark red with red pearl (Metallic)
Brighter than I expected, the color is a true cherry red with a metallic micro-sparkle finish. When the finish wore away (after about four hours), my lips were still stained cherry for several more hours.

Dekadent – melted grape popsicle (Stained Gloss)
Okay, I’m usually not a fan of purple, but Dekadent’s glossy sheerness makes this blue-tinged purple work. The color is short-lived compared to regular Lip Tar, but I still got about four hours of wear before I needed to reapply.

Pros:
Range of colors and finishes offers a way for anyone to update her Lip Tar wardrobe
Brush and vinyl carrying case are included
Contains Peppermint Oil, Organic Hemp Oil and Soy-Derived Vitamin E
OCC products are 100% vegan and cruelty-free

Cons:
If you have sensitivity to Peppermint Oil, Lip Tar might not be for you

Frankly, I don’t know which of these Lip Tars to reach for each morning, I love every one so much. It’s time to step into a bold, new OCC romance this fall, and Moderncraft invites us to leave our inhibitions at the door.

  1. Anita is gorgeous, and Role Play looks really striking! I especially love the inspiration; Cabaret is a favorite of mine and I think these colors capture the time period perfectly.
I don’t own any Lip Tar YET, but I’ve heard SUCH great things. I need to rectify this situation…

  2. This is probably the most wearable set I’ve seen from OCC! Totally LOVING these for the perfect vampy fall lip.

  3. Note to self… Must get me some of OCC lip tar! These look fantastic! I love the brilliance of each one.. Learning to wear reds and darker colors, so this is a great way to get started! Fall, here I come!

  4. I’ve never used OCC lip tars, but Anita looks awesome. That’s the color I’ve been gravitating towards this season. Wishlisted :)

  5. These are truly fabulous and I love them all! Sebastian keeps growing on me because it’s different from anything else I own, and is dramatic without being dark or bright. No matter which one you try, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

  6. I agree, these look very wearable for fall. I thought for sure the purple would be a big no no, but it looks subtle in the swatches…

  7. “Anita” and “Black Metal Dahlia” are quickening my pulse . . . love the coverage of these!

  8. Lip Tars are AMAZING. I have been testing out Rhythm Box (it’s from the Stained Gloss collection earlier this year) and it’s fantastic. A bit of metallic, a bit of microglitter, some really rich color, and good staying power. It looked so fantastic. And one tube will last me FOREVERRRRR. I’m pretty sure anyone would love the product and formula, it’s just a matter of finding the right shade! And there are so many :)

  9. I love the whole Cabaret-y vibe of these–such gorgeous winter colors! After I tested a regular Lip Tar and a Stained Gloss one, I fell in love. Dekadent is calling my name out of this bunch, for sure.

  10. Anything that comes with accoutrements catches my eye!

What an awesome inspiration – 1920s Weimar era Berlin. So cool!

  11. Black Metal Dahlia is just gorgeous! That sheen is perfect, and it would go great with my pale skin.
