Fear of chocolate? We’ve got the answer!
Growing up I had (and still have!) one of those aunts. Her house smelled of vanilla, she was always on trend with the latest health food, and she had a natural remedy for everything. Don’t get me wrong, I loved going to her house (and she’s half to “blame” for my hippy-dippy tendencies) but some things just wouldn’t fly with me, like carob as a chocolate substitute. No matter how she cajoled me I wouldn’t budge.
We’ve come a long way since those days, but most of the chocolate substitutes still leave me wanting. When I want chocolate I want chocolate! So what’s an eco-conscious and nutritionally concerned girl to do? Don’t worry, be Fearless!
Fearless organic super chocolate, created by Jordan Michael Schuster out of his kitchen in Oakland CA, is the ecologically and socially conscious answer to all your chocolate desires. Organic, raw, vegan, kosher, soy and gluten free; this chocolate is available to those with even incredibly restrictive diets.
The chocolate bars ($5.99 each) are raw, not roasted, meaning the entire chocolate making process never exceeds 118 degrees. This ensures that the nutrients, minerals and antioxidants aren’t damaged by the heat and promises a more beneficial experience in terms of nutrition.
Fearless offers five different varieties of chocolate including the bold and fruity Sweet & Hot Hibiscus Ginger, the tropically tinged Exploding Coconuts and the mighty (it’s full of Omega3 and amino acids) Super Seeds (as seen above).
In my opnion, the Dark Midnight is something that everyone must experience. The depth of taste is one that chocolate fanatics dream about.
Not so dark as to put off the average person but dark enough to have considerable bite, and with enough natural sweetness to give it a hint of what I can only describe as raspberry. It’s the perfect introduction to dark chocolate for those who have been hesitant thus far.
While the dark chocolate bar was my favorite, the first one I opened was the Matcha Green Tea Peppermynt (their spelling). I was excited because doesn’t that sound like an amazing combination?
I had a hard time tasting anything other than the chocolate itself, sadly. I get a tiny taste of the peppermint but not much, and no “tea” taste. However, it was still amazing. Smooth, rich chocolate with not a hint of bitterness. Lovely!
With super cute recycled packaging, organic ingredients and a company policy that devotes 1% of profits to change-makers suggested by customers (represented by the bite taken out of the corner of each bar) Fearless is a company I can get behind! Thank you for showing me that raw chocolate can, in fact, actually be chocolate-y and amazing! My chocolate cravings will never be the same again.

I can attest that this appeals to another subset, us lactose intolerant folks! I can generally tolerate chocolate, but with vegan chocolate I don’t even have to try!!
I think Exploding Coconuts would be my flavor of choice. Or Dark as Midnight…ooo, this could get dangerous! Thanks, @mandaleem, like I needed something ELSE to fuel my candy obsession! :-)
Hahah, you’re welcome @Lyssachelle ! At least you can justify this chocolate as health food chocolate? So, really, it’s as “bad” as eating a salad, right? :P
my son adores carob chocolate it is really strange he love it more than a real chocolate …
I have a friend who is the same way. Heh, more chocolate for us then, right?
This chocolate sounds AMAZING!!! I am a huge fan of coconuts-that would be the one that I would start with! Yummy!!!Yummy!!!
Coconut is my go-to summer flavor, I could go for some of that variety of Fearless right now!
I got to try the Exploding Coconuts version. Yum, yum, yum – although that wasn’t my first thought. I went in first bite with traditional chocolate in my mind. This is much, much different. First of all, you have to be a dark chocolate fan to like this (which I am). It almost taste like baking chocolate. It’s not sweet, it’s really kind of earthy tasting. So, once I wrapped my head around all that (and expelled any visions of melty, Hershey’s type chocolate) I really got into it, savoring every bite.
It’s worth noting that this bar only has 3 ingredients: organic raw cacao, whole cane sugar and raw shredded coconut. I think because the coconut is raw, it actually doesn’t have a traditional coconut taste that you’d expect. Again, not sweet – it’s a subtle earthy flavor.
And I love the packaging. The bite removed is just too sweet. I’m going 4 stars on this good for you/good for others treat!
It’s funny, the taste we most often associate with “coconut” is so laced with sugar it doesn’t bear much resemblance to the actual thing. And you’re right, you have to be able to get past the Hersey’s mentality when getting into this chocolate. But once you’re there, it’s SO GOOD! Glad you liked it @Stef !
Oh yum yum yum, @mandaleem ! I love chocolate, and I don’t know if I’ve ever had raw chocolate. Sounds like a must-try!
It’s definitely a must try @turboterp . Everyone I’ve introduced Fearless to has become a professed convert, so be prepared for a treat!
Oh my, these look amazing. I am a chocolate fan and making it vegan just sweetens the deal for me. Those packages are super cute and the little star imprints too!
I’ve never heard of raw chocolate, and am definitely intrigued by the concept. The Sweet & Hot Hibiscus Ginger is totally calling my name.
I don’t know how to say this. Really, I don’t know how to say this. I tried the one that sounds most interesting to me of the five, Hibiscus Ginger, and I really didn’t like it. At all. The components sound great; I loved that it’s organic. Ginger is especially awesome. But this tasted wierd in a perfumey meets bitter kind of way. This was the first chocolate I probably never finished. I wanted to love it and gave it multiple chances over more than a couple weeks’ time. I tried it with coffee, with milk and with wine. Nada worked for me. Oh this hurts me. I’m going to give it two stars: one for the promise of the other flavors, a half a star for the IDEA of this flavor, and another half a star for the organic thing. Kuddos for that. Sorry.
As someone who didn’t test these, I like to hear all opinions, even if it isn’t a positive one. @sherrishera, it sounds like you did a stellar job as a tester, really giving it multiple chances and trying it different ways!
I really appreciate your honest review, since that’s the one I wanted to try! Bummer :(
Hibiscus Ginger does sound like a pretty ambitious flavor, one that I was unsure about how well it would translate over into taste. While I tend to enjoy floral flavors in foods it’s more often jasmine or lavender.
Thanks for your honest review, and your super thorough testing! I’m still interested in trying it, but maybe I won’t seek it out quite as much now.
That packaging is absolutely the cutest thing ever! The Dark Midnight sounds right up my alley. I’ve never tried raw chocolate so I’m very curious about this product.
it sounds soooo good. too bad international shipping is about a 100$… no food is THAT good.
Woah, $100 for international shipping?! Yikes bikes! International shopping gets expensive, fast, I guess. Maybe you’ll get lucky and be able to find it locally some time!
I got to try a bar with “SEEDS”. It had flax seed in it. I really was not sure what to expect because I am not the hugest fan of flax seed. (I have tried flax seed in many healthy shakes. I always can taste it and the usual taste and flavor usually makes me gag.) However, I was pleasantly surprised because this bar was delicious. I savored it, eating one or two squares at a time and enjoyed EVERY BITE of it
Four Stars for me.
I actually kinda like Flax seed (I eat it in my yoghurt sometimes, or I swallow the oil straight!) so I think I would probably LOVE this variety. That, and the addition of flax seed just makes the bar even healthier, right? So I can totally replace a meal with this chocolate, right? Hahah. Chocolate as health food! It’s a wonderful thing.
I love the packaging and I love the bite out of the bar! I also love that they mention they make it unroasted and with low heat under 118 degrees preserving its natural nutrients, minerals and antioxidants. I also tested Dark as Midnight and love that it only has 2 ingredients: organic raw cacao and organic unrefined whole cane sugar. I’m not the biggest dark chocolate fan, and personally I like a little of that unhealthy refined sugar in my diet – at least in small doses! So, I was probably not the best tester of a dark bar, but for dark, I thought it was pretty good. It does taste a bit like baking chocolate before you add much sweetener – but it also tastes rich and dare I say, healthy. I’d love to have tried the slightly sweeter varieties more up my alley, like coconut, for a more accurate personal review, but trying to take subjective opinions out, I’d give it 4 stars.
I’m glad you liked it despite not being a big dark chocolate fan! Though I’m not sure about the other varieties being “sweeter.” The 70% Matcha Green Tea Peppermynt wasn’t that much sweeter than the 75% Dark as Midnight, it was just smoother with a tiny bit less bite. @Stef mentioned that the Exploding Coconut doesn’t taste as traditionally sweet as we expect coconut to be.
I definitely give Fearless Chocolate 4 stars. One star deducted for the lack of green tea or peppermint in the Matcha Green Tea Peppermynt bar and the slightly higher price. Ideally I’d like to give it 4 and a half stars, haha!
I’ve never tried these but the design is awfully cute! Dark Midnight sounds absolutely amazing. I love dark chocolate above all other chocolates! The coconut one sounds delicious too..mmm!
I tried Dark Midnight; it was interesting, to say the least. It took a little getting used to, but I ended up liking it. 4 stars from me!
