Five Key Elements for a Fabulous Party

Plus, a we heart this signature cocktail with BACARDI® Mixers: the Kumquat Kick Back!
It’s no secret, we love to throw a fabulous party, and we take it pretty seriously (see exhibit A and exhibit B.) If we hear at least one person say “Wow, you went all out!” at some point in the evening, we know we did our job.
Our BACARDI® Mixers signature cocktail
So, when we were selected to throw a party to celebrate BACARDI® Mixers and their 99 Days & 99 Drinks campaign, we knew we were up for the challenge. The fact that they were going to develop a signature cocktail for us only sealed the deal.
Although parties like these may look hard to pull off, they’re really not. With just five key elements (and a few time-saving tips) you too can have a shindig that will look like it was WAY more difficult to plan than it really was.
1. Pick a theme. A theme can help create a cohesive party and give direction for every necessary planning step. It can be as simple as a color; with flowers, table linens and even food selections made accordingly. Or, as elaborate as a concept; like old school Hollywood with guests dressed in their most debonair attire, classic black and white movies in the background and a soundtrack of Frank Sinatra songs on top. Because our signature drink included the BACARDI® Mixers Margarita Mix, we went with a Summer Fiesta as our theme.
2. Pour a signature cocktail. This is a sneaky little step. It instantly elevates any party to “fancy” status, but secretly makes things much easier to not have to stock up on every type of ingredient under the sun. Plus, it’s guaranteed to be one of the items your guests will talk about the most. BACARDI® Mixers had that covered for our fiesta. And deliciously covered, at that!
I filled out a questionnaire about my cocktail and party preferences, and they came up with a drink “in honor of (my) laid-back attitude and love for sophisticated flavors…”
Kumquat Kick Back (serves four)
Ingredients:
1/2 can frozen BACARDI® Mixers Margarita Mix (thawed)
1/2 cup BACARDI® Superior Rum
6 kumquats
4 mint leaves
1 cup sparkling wine
6 kumquats halved for garnish
4 cocktail picks
Directions:
1. In a cocktail shaker, combine BACARDI® Mixers Margarita Mix, kumquats, and mint.
2. Muddle to combine and add BACARDI® Superior and ice, and shake vigorously for about 10 seconds.
3. Strain into 4 champagne flutes and top with sparkling wine. (We went with high ball glasses instead.)
4. Garnish with 3 halved kumquats skewered onto a cocktail pick.
I am so proud of this tart and tasty cocktail. BACARDI® Mixers couldn’t be easier either. You can use them either blended with ice or thawed for an infinite number of flavor possibilities (way beyond just their namesake Margarita, Strawberry Daiquiri and Piña Colada.) Most Mixers are even made with real fruit juice, with a fresh taste to match.
(Like them on Facebook to see a new cocktail daily and share your own ideas – they may just transform them into a personalized cocktail recipe like they did for us.)

3. Plan your menu. I have a tendency to go overboard when it comes to food, but I recommend you don’t. You don’t need countless food options. Three or four recipes that fit your theme, in quantities large enough so no one is hungry, is perfect. Don’t be afraid to ask guests to bring a dish with them. If you’re fussy and want it to fit the theme (I am and I did), work out in advance what they should bring.
For the fiesta main dish, we grilled carne asada from our local carniceria for tacos. For sides, I made my go-to guacamole, a red cabbage cole slaw and fiesta beans (refried and pinto beans mixed, then baked with scallions and cheese). And a couple of my lovely guests brought the two dishes that starred alongside the tacos; elote (a creamy grilled corn dish) and Mexican hot cocoa cupcakes.
4. Décor to dazzle. Festive decorations are the kind of special touches that really bring a party together. You can keep it simple or you DIY types can really go to town. Best of all, you don’t have to spend a lot to do something really fabulous. I brightened the house with sunflowers and gladiolus ($6), strung Mexican cut paper banners over our picnic table ($9) and made tissue flower disco balls ($4 each) for an easy and colorful look. I added a few pieces from my collection of vintage Mexican tablecloths and was all set.
5. A game and a prize. I don’t care how old you are; it’s fun to play games (especially once you’ve had a few signature cocktails!) And if the winner gets a prize, even better. Again, it doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, a silly gift is even better. I was extremely lucky in that BACARDI® Mixers provided muddlers, visors, coupons and recipe booklets for my guests, so I was able to do gift bags for everyone. I found a funny coffee mug to enhance the winner’s bag, and we played a few very fun rounds of Mexican Bingo.
See how happy people are when they win?

Your party looks like it was so much fun! How sad I am that I do not live anywhere near you! Your yard is so cool! The cocktail sounds delish, and how fun it’s in your honor! Onion goggles? Seriously? Where can I get those, and are they for real? Love your post, mama!
The onion goggles are the bomb @rachelshay! If you hate chopping onions because your eyes burn and tear up, they are a life saver. Fun too!
@rachelshay – next to my Clarisonic, bug vacuum and iphone; my onion goggles are my favorite gadget! If you’re a big tearer when you cut onions, these are godsent.
Good kitchen stores have them. Google them goggles!
@stef – It sure looks like you know how to throw a festive party. You out did yourself — the pictures made me feel like I was there to experience it. Well done.
BTW- I used to love Bacardi Mixers in college. I guess I have completely forgotten about them. Thanks for the reminder.
@stef, you sure KNOW how to have a fun time.. Just throw in some fun food, fantastic bevs by Bacardi and friends and you have all the makings of a perfect party .. Love the decorations and the table is REALLY COOL!! Awesome!
Isn’t that turquoise table amazing @irene!? @stef borrowed it from a neighbor for the festivities and everyone at the party was drawn to it. Such and amazing color and it could fit a dozen (or more) people around it. I’m hoping they forget to return it for a little while and we can use it all summer long!
Wow this party looks amazing! You guys did such an awesome job. I love the scenery too – always jelly when I see your home pics! It’s a beautiful day out in NYC today…would LOVE to be sipping on a Kumquat Kick Back :)
Some great tips here, @Stef! You need to share the recipe for the Mexican hot cocoa cupcakes; they look so artfully done!
Oh my gosh, the Mexican hot cocoa cupcakes were so good @marissa – I think I had 2 or 3 the night of the party. And then woke up and had one for breakfast! We’ll have to work on sharing the recipe with all of you.
Yum, love the idea of kumquat cocktails! And the mexican bingo looks awesome too!!!
This looks like an awesome party! Wish I’d been there.
Wish you could have been there too @phyrra! The next time you make it to California we will have to get you out to the desert so you can enjoy a wht hosted party!
That @stef sure knows how to plan a party! My favorite part -besides the cocktails of course – were the decorations. The Mexican cut paper banners looked amazing against the bright blue desert sky and the DIY tissue paper disco balls were so bright and cheery! Plus they are so affordable and easy – what’s not to love about that?
And I’ve got to give shout out to Tip #5 – the Bingo game and excitement over who would win the “big prize”. Plus it was nice to have the entire guest list at one table and all talking together.
As for the Bacardi mixer cocktail, the Kumquat Kick Back was delish! A little sweet, a little tart and very refreshing. We will be drinking these again!
What an awesome party! I would totally crash it if I lived near you. Maybe I’ll drive down to crash it. It’s tempting :) Those drink glasses are beautiful, I love your garnishes, and OMG KUMQUATS–I haven’t had one of those in forever.
I never would have imagined a Kumquat cocktail would sound so delicious, but I’m sold! I love margaritas, and can’t believe I’ve never tried BACARDI mixers– thanks for giving me great reason to buy them.
The party looks like it was SO much fun! Thanks for giving us all a chance to experience it, and for sharing your party tips, too!
Thanks for all the nice comments everyone! I wish you all could have been there. I really do think I missed my calling as a party planner. Give me a theme and a budget, and I’ll obsessively plan something pretty fab, like this!
I can’t believe only one dog made it into my pics! They were never more than a foot away from anyone at all times, as there were a lot of table scrap feeders in attendance!
I must say, the Kumquat Kick Back is REALLY good. It’s kind of like an tart orange margarita. Super easy to make too (the hardest thing was finding kumquats in my two horse town!) It was my first time using BACARDI Mixers, and it absolutely won’t be the last. There’s about 10 drinks over on their Facebook page that I want to try already!
@stef, those onion goggles are something else.. I cry like a fool when cutting onions, so they are very appealing! The matchstick tip in your teeth really doesn’t’ work! Did you ever see “The Help”? That’s where I first heard about the matches!
This will help in the meantime if you don’t have those fashionable onion eye goggles.
Chill onions in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before peeling or chopping them. Sulfuric vapors move more slowly in the cold — think about how garbage smells worse during hot weather.
Leave the onion root intact until the last possible minute to prevent irritants from escaping into the air. The root contains the largest concentration of sulfuric compounds in an onion.
Chop or cut the onion with a sharp knife. Fast, clean slicing puts less pressure on the onion tissue and minimizes the release of sulfuric compounds. A sharp knife also allows you to expedite your slicing and reduce your exposure to the onion fumes.
Open a window or light a scented candle close to your chopping station. The hot flame of a candle attracts tear-causing vapor and reduces the amount of vapor circulating in the air.

The drink sounds tasty, but I have to say @stef – Your onion goggles are identical to the doggles my dog Matilda wears when we ride in the Jeep with the top down. She even makes that same, exact facial expression. Your pic brought me joy :)
Wow, you ladies really know how to throw a party! I love the onion goggles, they really make the outfit, haha!
I’m going to have to keep a look out for Bacardi Mixers. Where do you think I’d find it, the freezer section or the beer section?
