It’s no secret that we heart this hearts subscription boxes. But really, who doesn’t? A box of surprises dropped on your doorstep, valued at more than what you paid for it? Duh. But when said box can give back too, that’s when the love is TRULY felt. Enter GlobeIn.

GlobeIn curates theme boxes that bring the world directly to you. Literally, the world. If one of your favorite things about travel is shopping, then this is the box for you.

But these boxes are so much more than just exotic gifts. GlobeIn partners with artisans in small collectives all over the world. Those colorful coasters from Ghana that sit on your table and make your house look internationally cool? Well, GlobeIn also assisted the artists with tools to build a sustainable business to take care of themselves, their families and their communities.

How amazing is that?

I received the Entertain Box, but past themes were Laundry, Picnic, Wander and Kitchen. Upcoming in September is Wellness. These Artisan Boxes are $35, including shipping.

So, what’s it look like to Entertain around the world? It’s rather fabulous…

You need some decorations, of course. For that there’s the beautiful Tea Time Bunting ($8). Made from upcycled Indian saris by woman artisans in India, each bunting includes 7 triangles and spans 92″ with 18″ of string on each end for tying.

As festive as they are, they’re made in a region of the world with conditions that are hard for Westerners to comprehend. The women who make these buntings belong to male dominated, conservative families and usually are not allowed to work outside the home due to social limitations and family responsibilities.

This artisan collection that makes these buntings brings the women together to “share their issues and work collectively to protect and strengthen each other, thus helping them to become independent both financially and emotionally.”

It’s a theme that carries through all the GlobeIn selections, and it’s a very worthy one.

Back to entertaining, you need snacks! The Sun Dried Tomato Caper Spread ($8) is a delicious option. It’s a savory spread made from native Palestinian tomato varieties, sun dried then blended with wild capers and organic olive oil. It’s good as a spread or a dip with bread and crackers. Or, toss it with pasta. Or just eat it with a spoon. I can attest that way is just fine too!

This delectable spread helps a tomato drying cooperative in Palestine, specifically a woman’s who’s son was diagnosed with leukemia who found a “sisterhood” amongst the group despite the region’s restrictive political environment.

You also need somewhere to set your cocktails. The aforementioned Coasters ($12) will do it with style. One side is recycled plastic, the other hand-dyed batik fabric. All handmade in Ghana by young mothers learning sewing skills to get themselves out of poverty. One purchase, $12, provides one month of savings for an artisan to put towards her future.

Finally, who doesn’t need more containers? The GlobeIn Signature Handwoven Basket ($12) is stand in any box. Woven from discarded palm leaves by indigenous Oaxacan artisans and colored using natural, water-borne paints. The steady sales of these baskets help the artisans create predictable, sustainable income.

Let me tell you something about palm leaf baskets. I went to Mexico once as a photographer’s assistant. We traveled rural parts of the country, shooting its beauty and it was an all around memorable trip. I didn’t have much money but I wanted to bring a memento home. So when I met a group of women selling palm baskets at the base of a mountain, I knew I had my item. Beautiful and useful, I brought that basket home with such pride.

But here’s the other thing, palm leaves smell delicious; sweet and earthy. My dogs agreed and ate the basket the first night I got home. I have mourned that basket ever since! Well, until now.

This one will sit high on a shelf, far away from dog noses and teeth.

So, that’s GlobeIn; delightful, useful and vibrant goods that bring joy to you and the folks who made them. Purchase a Benefit Basket ($19.99 with free shipping), which is 1 item in a signature basket. Or, sign up for the Artisan Box ($35 with free shipping), a curated theme of 3-4 items.

  1. Darn it Steph, I do NOT need another subscription box, but this one really appeals! I love the story behind the selections and the do-good aspect of each one.

  2. Oh WOW, this looks so cool. I love subscription boxes, they’re like grab bags for grown-ups. But GlobeIn seems so different, I don’t think I’ve seen a subscription box like it before, and definitely not one that’s socially conscious like this!

  3. This is such a cool idea! I love international culture and bringing pieces of it home without ever leaving is brilliant! It’s not a bad price either…

  4. What an awesome idea for a subscription box! I love that idea of supporting artisans all over the world.
