I’m going to share a secret with you, I’ve always wanted to be a rockabilly girl. That vintage, tough meets sexy, sweet meets pinup girl vibe? I think it’s incredibly beautiful. There was always one problem though. Vintage clothes rarely fit me. Always too tight through the shoulders, and usually in a size that wouldn’t even fit half of me – my rockabilly vision was quickly squelched. Until now…
Heartbreaker Fashion makes my vintage dreams a reality! Retro designs in modern cuts (many dress designs go up to 2XL) allow anyone to get that perfect blend of edgy and oh-so cute. This Mother and Daughter team (love that!) design everything from simple t-shirts to dresses so fancy you could wear them to a ball, and tons of fabulous finds in between. Best of all? Their designs can add a touch of vintage flair to a more conservative wardrobe just as easy as they can go full out Rocking Betty.
Heartbreaker were kind enough to send me a few of their pieces so I could see the quality and cuteness with my own eyes. I’ll be sharing a we heart this/Heartbreaker photo shoot with you in the next few weeks (but here’s a hint, these designs are ah-mazing!) Until then, here’s a quick peek at some of our favorites. And perhaps best of all? Most designs come in multiple fabrics, so you’ll be sure to find the perfect piece.
Super Spy Dress – $54, above right: 100% cotton, 100% va-va-voom! Not too clingy (so it’s comfortable) and hugs in all the right places (so it’s KILLER-looking!)
Monique Dress – $92, above left: Shown here in a print with hints of gold metallic, this A-line dress is simple, sweet and could be dressed up or down. Adorable!
And since we’ve well established our purse fetish around these parts, how cute is this Lux De Ville handbag? It’s called the Kitty Kiss Lock purse ($74) and I need to make it mine. Apparently Diablo agrees, as the price is $66.60 with the wht code…
We got to ask Mandie (the daughter portion of this dynamic duo) a few questions…
we heart this: Tell us the story behind Heartbreaker. Why did you start the line?
Mandie: It was a combination of me being a poor college student and a school project my mother was preparing for students in her fashion class. Because I was broke, I would just make dresses for myself to wear out on the weekend. These were one-of-a-kind-just-how-I-like-it dresses that you simply would never find anywhere else. Most of my dresses would be used once and I would turn around and sell on eBay.
My mother’s class project was teaching the concept of designing a comprehensive line (which had a vintage inspired theme). We decided to put one of her class project dresses up on eBay as well. The bids went crazy. Mom looked at me and said “I think we can make a business out of this”. Now, 6 years later, Heartbreaker is now a full-time job for the both of us.
wht: Do you have a design background?
Mandie: I have some background in fine arts, but I chose to study music all through high school and college. So no, I never formally went to fashion school to study design. I grew up watching my mom design and sew in our home for as long as I can remember. She taught me how to sew when I was very young so that I wouldn’t break her machines. I made a lot of my own clothing in high school as well.
wht: You and your Mom are business partners, is that something you imagined you’d do? How do you work as a team?
Mandie: I never thought I’d end up sharing my career with my mother, but it’s turned out to be pretty awesome and well balanced. I have always know from a very young age that I wanted to be my own boss.
Mama Heartbreaker (Teresa) has the background and years of experience in the fashion industry. We both design and choose textiles together. My mother oversees the production of garments from start to finish- this includes creating our patterns, perfecting fit, communicating with our contractors, and communicating with wholesale customers.
I handle the retail marketing aspect- scheduling photoshoots, maintaining our web site and social media sites, attending different events, advertising, customer service, etc… We’ve created a very efficient system by focusing our strengths properly. I can’t do the work she does and she can’t do mine, we really need each other for the success of this business to continue.
wht: Does your Mom wear your designs?
Mandie: Mama Heartbreaker wears Heartbreaker almost every day! It just goes to show that ladies of all ages comfortably wear our dresses.

I love Love LOVE this site, @stef ! The dresses alone are putting me in a frenzy of shopping desire. Are the pieces you tried cut true-to-size?
Oh, that leopard bag! How will I resist that?!
I love the leopard bag too! I’m glad to hear the sizes are even for bigger women like me! I hate when I love something and it’s not available in my size. Great site @stef. I like the price tags too.. not out of sight at all! :)
