Forget OJ & champagne, Kahlúa spiked coffee is the new Mimosa
Spring is the season of brunches – from Easter to Mother’s Day and all the bridal parties in between – a fabulous brunch is where it’s at. While the food menu is endless in its possibilities, the drink of choice is always the same – the standard (dare I say boring) Mimosa.
Recently, with some tips from the Delicioso Brunch Club we hosted a brunch of our own where we served the tried and true drink of every morning, coffee. And what’s the best way to add some festive flair to your java cup? Kahlúa, of course!
There’s no better addition to a steaming cup of joe, than a shot (or two) of sweet Kahlúa, the classic liquor concoction of coffee and sugarcane with hints of vanilla and caramel.
We decided to take a cue from the coffee cupping craze, but added our own little twist. Instead of serving multiple types of coffee for examination, we offered our guests a variety of yummy additions to enhance their Kahlúa and coffee cocktail. Guests were free to add one or two ingredients or let their tastebuds run wild.
Then everybody took turns sharing, sipping and debating the results. The verdict? It all came down to personnel tastes, but every single cup was delicious.
Setting up your own brunch coffee bar, in lieu of Mimosas, will not only delight your guests, it’s easy and economical as well. A bottle of Kahlúa will stretch much farther than a bottle of champagne. And you can purchase a handful of high quality ‘a la carte’ ingredients with the money you save skipping the orange juice aisle.
Start with the freshest and richest coffee possible, preferably beans if you own a grinder. For the best flavor, we recommend a French press. Of course, a good ground coffee made in your standard brewer will work as well. Afterall, it’s the accompanying bottle of Kahlúa that’s the star of the show.
Stage a table or counter with the fresh pot of coffee, the Kahlúa, a number of coffee mugs and some shot glasses. Next add your picks for making some flavorful concoctions.
Coffee Bar Suggestions:
• organic cream
• speciality sugars – we used tangerine and cinnamon
• fresh fruit – citrus goes great with Kahlúa, we went with oranges
• spices – like nutmeg, cinnamon and cardamom
• blocks of dark and milk chocolate – we used chocolate spoons
• caramel drops
• extracts – like vanilla and peppermint
• whipped cream (especially if its homemade!)
Then let your guests have at it and start creating their own customized brews. We tested out almost every combination possible and the stand out favorites to our Kahlúa and coffee were tangerine sugar with whipped cream and a cinnamon sugar rim mixed with a chocolate spoon.

I do love brunch… especially if there are breakfast potatoes like potatoes o’brien! Or scones with clotted cream! Or eggs benedict with crabcakes instead of canadian bacon!! And while mimosas are a traditional brunch drink, I personally prefer a cocktail with a little bit more oomph to it. Kahlua coffee is great… and I love all of the add ins that you mentioned. Baileys and coffee is also delicious, but my favorite would probably be an Irish coffee with freshly made whipped cream. Okay, so maybe it’s more of an after dinner drink for some people. I call it straight up deliciousness.
I love a good brunch too – in fact I think, when its done right, that it’s my very favorite meal. Some perfectly cooked eggs, buttery toast, salty and greasy potatoes and lots of coffee – mmmm.
Kahlúa and I are friends.. Yup, cream and coffee go together like a dream! This looks awesome!!! Thanks for making me drool! :)
Yum! This looks so delicious!
It was delicious @mandabear! I’ve got to say a coffee bar brunch with a bottle of Kahlua is a lot of fun for guests and so much cheaper than mimosas. It’s a great way to save some money that can go to other, high-end ingredients.
Hahaha, I’m so boring with my coffee. My preferred blend- black. LOL! But if I was in just the right mood I bet mixing in a little Kahula and a few fancy toppings would hit the spot. And so much more cost effective and versatile than mimosas! Very yummy post @Tyna !
