With an invite to a fabulous New Year’s Eve party sitting on my desk, minimal dollars in the budget and a VERY distinct vision of what I wanted to wear; I knew I had some savvy online shopping ahead of me if I still wanted to have enough money in my purse for a 3am breakfast on January 1st. I took to the web, idea in head to recreate my vision via Sears.
Now, if you’re anything like me you may thinking “Sears, really?” Let me tell you, Sears, really! Until now, I thought of Sears as primarily a place for appliances, not one I turned to for fashion. How wrong I was! I found a HUGE selection of totally on-trend pieces. Just how huge? A search for ankle boots brings up 261 pairs. Yep, that huge. Best of all; everything is so reasonably priced that everyone’s breakfast may just be on me on Jan. 1st!
The Dress
Nothing quite says “party dress” like black velvet. It’s perfect for the holidays; a bit traditional, a bit sexy and absolutely glamorous. My inspiration came from the dress shown above left, priced at very unreasonable $879 (marked down from $1,465 though!)
On the right is the Kardashian Kollection Velvet Drape Dress that has the same clean lines, but I like it WAY better than my original inspiration. It has a low cut v in the back that makes for an interesting contrast with the added sash, like little girl meets big girl. And how great is it to prefer a $49.99 dress over a $879 one?
The Coat
I’ve got tons of leopard print in my wardrobe already, but what I’ve really been wanting is something in a snow leopard variation. It’s unexpected and I think it will really turn heads. Shown on the left is the coat I have been coveting ever since I first saw it. But at $995, it’s really not a reality for me or my wallet.
Shown on the right is the UK Style by French Connection Faux Fur Snow Leopard Swing Coat. It’s not exactly the same; but totally cute and such a deal at $69.99. It’s the kind of coat you’ll want to pet all night!
The Shoes
What girl doesn’t want the perfect pair of black platforms? I’ve wanted a patent leather pair for ages now. But at $845, I’d be saving for quite a while.
Shown on the right are a FAB alternative, the Kardashian Kollection Dallas on sale for only $29.99. Sure, you don’t get the iconic red sole, but that’s worth a $800 savings, no? I like the addition of the T-strap, again for that play on little/big girl that you get with the party dress.
The Statement Jewelry
I’m thinking between the coat, dress and shoes – I’ve got a lot going on! So I’m limiting my jewelry to one big statement piece. Since I plan to wear my hair up, earrings are the perfect choice.
I probably could splurge on the $100 pair shown on the left, but why should I when the Kardashian Kollection Multi-Strand 2-Tone Chain Earrings are only $14. Mixed metal, chain fringe, they’re a smart and fashionable choice!
So, an outfit that could have cost $2819 was only $164! That is one epic round of Splurge vs. Steal – thanks Sears!

I am loving that velvet dress! JC Penny is my secret splurge vs steal spot, but I may have to check out Sears now! Thanks for the eye opening post!
Overall, I like your Steal items as much as I like the idea of all that extra $$$ in my wallet. I’ve never shopped for fashion at Sears, and I do love a bargain. Have fun at your party, @stef !
I am also a big black velvet lover! I wore my two piece pant set last week… Not only is it pretty on, it’s soo comfy! I think you’re spot on too @stef, Sears has got some really nice clothes now.. and your also right, you’ll still have money left over for that 3am breakfast!
I love going home for Christmas every year and visiting the Sears that has been in my hometown for ever. it seems every year I buy a sweater and pj’s there (it’s cold in PA).
And I’ve gotta admit, I’m not a fan of the reality show but that Kardashian Kollection Velvet Dress is adorable. It’s pretty and dressy and looks warm (I hate wearing sleeveless winter party dresses – again too cold!) and flattering as well.
Fun post @stef – I always love a good Splurge vs. Steal!
@tyna – I am with you! I am not a fan of the Kardashians but, I really do like the velvet dress and some of their other things. Sears sure has upgraded their image, selection and style!
This is a really fun post, I like the save shoes better then the fancy ones!
Also, that splurge dress costs more then I’m budgetting for my wedding dress… Seriously! I know I’m not a huge fashion person, but I just don’t understand spending that much on a party dress ever, even if I could afford it. Can you imagine if everyone who had the money for that bought a $100 dress instead and donated $700 to feed hungry children? Sorry, I’m on a bit of rant today. Love the post!
@pinkshaya – you’re absolutely right. It’s all relative, of course. $875 is nothing to some people. But yeah, why spend it just because you can?
Great post! I am impressed and really liking the Kardashian Kollection…looks like I’ll have to make my way over to Sears soon!
Nice post! I love Splurge/Steal posts. They really put things in perspective.
I recently discovered the wonder that is Sears…after I discovered the wonder that is Lands’ End and discovered that Sears carries their stuff in store. I always thought Lands’ End stuff was for unfashionable elementary school teachers, but they have some cute stuff. Or I now dress like an unfashionable elementary school teacher. I’m not going to analyze that…
I love those t strap heels! I never thought I’d admit to loving anything Kardashian, but hey- gotta give credit where credit is due! This post has me ready to whip out my Sears card and do some shopping.
I’m not sure I can buy anything with the name “Kardashian” on it…
@lipglossandspandex – oh, I hear you! I am SO not a fan. I also personally cringe when people use alternative letters: kollection, girlz – it drives me batty. But, there’s no denying these clothes are darn cute. So I quickly got over it.
yup ! i totally must visit sears asap !
