Jump into fall’s intense shadows with this LE collection
With its uniquely soft, lightweight formula and striking, shimmering colors, MAC’s Electric Cool Eyeshadows have arrived to jolt us into fall in shocking style. Springy and soft, Electric Cool’s formula is like nothing we’ve seen from MAC before. With sensational blending power and medium-to-high coverage, Electric Cool sets out to transform eyes in a flash.
This Limited Edition release brings us twelve stunning shadows ($18.50) to spark it, amp it, shock it MAC style. I tested Blacklit, a deep black with tiny flecks of multicolored micro-sparkle. This shadow, while extremely dark, can be applied in a semi-sheer wash, or built to the medium-to-high coverage Electric Cool is designed to provide.
The texture reminds me of MAC’s Big Bounce release – kind of spongy and soft, not a cream exactly – but Electric Cool shadows are ultimately different. The texture is almost as dry as a powder, with a bouncy foam core that feels creamy. MAC describes it as “soft, lightweight, springy,” and although it blends easier than the challenging Big Bounce formula, I still struggled a bit with uneven pigment on my lids.
MAC suggests using a large eye shadow brush, like their 249 Large Shader Brush, to maximize pick-up and distribution of the shadow. But I had the best luck applying Blacklit with my fingers (I know, I know… sorry, germ-phobes!). Once it was in place, I couldn’t really tamper with it or it would blotch up unevenly. A primer didn’t really help with blending, although the shadow wasn’t as sheer when applied over a primer.
Because Blacklit is so dark, I especially loved it as a sheer wash. My struggle to get even coverage was worth the results: a stunning black with depth and subtle sparkle.
a blurry shoot to bring out the sparkle…
All the colors in this collection look gorgeous, and I’d love to see how Blacklit blends with Electroplate or Fashion Circuit – if I can find them. These Electric Cool hues are going fast, so bolt to MAC before they’re gone!

Superwatt sounds awesome!! I love a good taupe. Blacklit is very pretty. Not an everyday kind of a shadow but a great night time kind of a scenario. Great review @turboterp !!!
WOW! These colors bring a colorful, sparkly punch. How I envy the gals who get to wear fun eye makeup like this to work. (I am in a conservative workplace.) MAC always has such great LE collections.
Looks pretty!
Love the sparkle, but OMG I remember how poorly the Big Bounce shadows applied… I love MAC but I don’t think I’m going to invest in these Electric Cool shadows.
Ultimately, this formula is different from Big Bounce’s, and the color I tested was beautiful. You should test them at MAC and see if they work for you before you invest, @lipglossandspandex .
@turboterp, it just seems like MAC’s new formulas for eye colors have been pretty underwhelming lately (Big Bounce, the dual ended shadow pencil/greasepaint stick).
Oh these look nice! I love the shimmer and they sound excellent for smokey eyes.
Sooo pretty! Cant wait to see the rest!
I’ve got Superwatt and Electroplate on my radar. I really want to know what they look like on…
