I’m a lipgloss junkie. I have it all, my trusty Blistex, painful plumping versions, Lip Smackers á la eighth grade…well, you get the idea. But until now, I’ve never found a gloss I was willing to go nude for.
As soon as I got my hands on MUD’s full line of Lip Glazes (3 carefully selected shades) I was hooked. These little tubes of perfection are truly the “grownup” answer to the middle school era gunk that I just couldn’t completely cut ties with. And at only $12 each, a bargain!
MUD, or Make-Up Designory, is a particularly fun makeup line because it’s a spinoff from their schools in Los Angeles and New York. You know it’s got to be good when it’s being put to the test every day by makeup artists and industry experts! The best part is that MUD provides shoppers with all the tools to get the same looks that they put together, like the professional-quality lip brush (need!) that retracts for the perfect throw-in-your-purse favorite to get glam on the go.
My favorite Lip Glaze was most definitely Bare. MUD describes the color as a warm beige-pink, but I don’t think that even comes close to doing it justice. This is the first nude glaze I’ve ever tried, and it has kicked off a whole new look in my makeup repertoire. I’m very fair, and it gives my lips a natural-meets-glam shine without any shimmer. I pat a bit of face powder over my lips before applying this to neutralize my natural lip color and give it a really great base. I love to wear this gloss with a peachy blush and soft pink eyeshadow for a really youthful glow. Bare is really the perfect color for summer and would pair wonderfully with all those China Glaze pastels we’ve been eyeing!
Magnolia, a light blush color with soft flecks of gold, definitely lips up to its description. The golden flecks add a ton of depth and really dress this gloss up for a very polished look. The base color, a deep rose, strikes me as one that would be very universally-flattering, and the shimmer brings this glaze up to a nighttime-caliber look. Magnolia’s warm glow pulled me and my dried-up pucker out of a fierce winter slump. This shade could flawlessly transition from winter to spring and well beyond with its incredibly versatile tones.
The last shade in my new arsenal is Java, a deep, rich chocolate with hints of berry. I have to give the MUD masterminds credit – they’re quite adept at describing a color to a T, and this one really takes the cake. Java really is a deep, chocolatey tone. I think that this would be gorgeous on olive-skinned (my mother – *sigh*) or African American women, but on somebody as sheet-white as myself, it was a little overwhelming.
All three shades went on smoothly and lived up to their reputation of never being sticky. The color lasted longer than most tinted glosses, and the shimmer sticks around even after the color’s gone. I really like that the glazes had only a very subtle, adult scent (because a strong scent can be a real turnoff for me). The squeezable tube applicator delivers the perfect amount of color and is great for on-the-go touchups without a mirror. The MUD site suggests makeup pairings for each gloss, so the whole thing’s completely foolproof. I can confidently recommend these glazes to any woman out there.

Great review Lindsay! I got to test the Bare color and it’s fantastic. Like Lindsay, this was the first nude glaze I’ve ever tried as well and I have to say, it’s found it’s way into my regular makeup routine. The color is subtle but the shine is outstanding! Bare is great day makeup without being boring. Plus it smells really nice, like strawberries.
And Lindsay, you are so right about the package design! One of the first thoughts I had after using it the first few times was how easy it is to apply without the use of a mirror, which makes it a great mobile makeup item.
I’m thoroughly impressed by the MUD Lip glaze so I think I’ll have to check out Magnolia and Java. My lip gloss collection is starting to get a little bit out of control with all of these fantastic glosses lately….
Kari – I know just what you mean about getting out of control, and I can totally relate!
Like I said, love love these glazes! It’s pretty telling that I’m sporting Bare as I’m writing this… Enter the giveaway, people! Free gorgeous glazes!!!
I got to try Java and OH MAN…LOVE IT. In fact, I just had a minor freak-out this morning because I can’t find my tube. (STILL can’t…grrr….)
Lindsey’s spot-on about the color for olive-toned or darker skinned girls; the deep berry/brick color is just awesome. It’s sheer and stays without being too sticky or slippery. It hasn’t QUITE replaced my CO Bigelow Mentha Lip Tint in my heart, but it’s come close. 5 Stars from me!!!
MUD Lip Glaze is new to me and you’ve made the products sound so enticing, Lindsay. Great review! I am a gloss fanatic and can’t wait to check these out.
Addicted to gloss! I love that the site helps with colors…
Great review!
Alyssa – I’m also a huge fan of C.O. Bigelow gloss. Amazing products.
I got to try Bare and this is also my first time wearing a nude gloss! Although I’ve been wanting to. I thought it would wash me out because, like Lindsay, I am sheet-white. However, it gives enough color to not fade into the background. I am really pleased with this gloss.
Lindsay gave me a great tip awhile back – apply powder to your lips and then apply the gloss. You get a fantastic canvas for the gloss to truly shine! It looks very nude and subtle. With a subtle eye (achieved with my E.L.F. products) and a gentle glow (my Senna blush) – this gloss became the center of a fantastic look!
I’m definitely a fan! 5 stars from me too!
Like Lindsay, I got the chance to review all 3 shades. Because looking at them and trying to pick just one was way too hard for a gloss junkie! I could see all 3 of them working for numerous types of applications. And I was right…
These are on-the-go glosses, as some of the reviewers have already mentioned. Squeeze tube with a slant tip top. Perfect for quick application or for when you don’t have a mirror (like, when you’re driving with your knees and applying makeup. Don’t do that though, that’s dangerous!) Personally I prefer a doe foot applicator, because I can get more precise with application. But these do come in handy.
Bare is a great nude, as the gals have pointed out. It looks to be a solid shade at first, but upon really close inspection, it has a bit of super fine gold shimmer. The shimmer doesn’t even really register on your lips, but it gives it a bit more oomph. It’s pretty sheer, but does show up really well on your lips. And I’ve found it works well with EVERY nude lipstick I own. Because it’s so neutral (a true nude), it’s a real workhorse.
Magnolia is beautiful, a medium pink with gold shimmer that you CAN see. This has become the gloss I keep in my purse at all times, because it pretty much works with whatever kind of colors I have going on.
Java is the real special one to me though. Rich and chocolatey, with berry toned shimmer. It’s like a raspberry chocolate cupcake! It’s pretty deep, but sheer enough that I can get away with it during the day without looking too gothy. But over red lipstick? Oh my, it’s just beautiful! Tones down any garish-ness of the red and gives it warm depth.
These don’t have a ton of scent to them either, just a light berry that fades quickly. I appreciate that.
If they were doe-foot applicators, I’d love them even more. But as is, a beautiful range of colors in a very user friendly package. Good stuff!

What can I add to Lindsay’s review that hasn’t already been said? I tried the MUD Lip Glaze in Java, and it was a very lovely deep dark berry shade with a mix of chocolate. (I put some on this afternoon as a matter of fact.) It came out the tube very easily. It wasn’t too thick or too thin. It gave my lips a very nice hint of color. It didn’t last as look as some of the lip glosses I own, but the texture was smooth enough that I could reapply without my lips feeling gunky.
I got to try Bare as well. I can’t really elaborate any more on what everyone else has said. I would just be repeating them. :)
I will say this, I usually only wear chap stick or balm on my lips and call it good. But lately I have been wanting to add some light color or at least a shine. If you are feeling the same way then I would defiantly recommend this color. It really enhances your natural lip color and gives a great shine. I have been putting the gloss on over my chap stick and love the way it feels, it doesn’t get sticky or clumpy. MUD Lip Glaze Bare is great for the low key kind of girl like me. 5 stars
Magnolia looks fab for my coloring!
So it sounds like the gloss is not super long lasting but is also not very sticky or gunky. So as Rakisha said it would not be bad to reapply often if needed. Does everyone else agree?
The colors looks very nice! It seems like a must have for sure! Thanks for the review!!
Kellie I just put some on about 2 hours ago and it still feels great. I just now applied it about 3 times to see if it would feel sticky or gunky but it feels awesome!
Thanks for the info Cori! It just keeps sounding better and better !!
I’ll admit, I wasn’t wowed by the packaging of the MUD Lip Glaze at first glance. BUT, after 5 years of reviewing beauty products (and countless dollars spent since my teens on pretty packages)I’ve learned that you can not judge a product on the package! MUD – the actual Lip Glaze exceeded my expectations for a gloss!
I went out of the box and instead of testing the Bare I went with the medium shaded Magnolia. Love it (and want to get my hands on Bare next). Lindsay is right that this deep rose would flatter many complexions – normally the gold flecks in glosses work against my skin but this gloss is pure pink shine with a golden glow. I wear it alone during the day when i want some color insted of a plain balm. And I use it during the evenings with a nude or rose pencil/lipstick to add some pizazz and shine.
Turns out, I ended up loving the packaging in the end. No frills, just a simple, portable tube (clear, so you can see the shade at a glance) that I can pull out and apply whenever – no mirror needed!

I also got to try Bare and I do have to say I love it. This is one of those glosses that went straight into my purse because I knew I would use it often. The color is just as described with a little shimmer to it. Keeps my lips nice and moisturized. I do wish it had a wand type applicator like Stef mentioned, but that would not keep me from buying this again. Java looks equally as gorgeous. Just might have to take advantage of that 15% off coupon.
I heard from a lil’ birdie today that MUD are releasing 3 more lip glaze shades very soon…

I’ve slowly become lip gloss obsessed and this was a welcome addition to my collection. I tried Java, and as everyone has said Lindsay’s description and Muds is spot on. Im on the pale side too, but I also tried it over red and wow does it ever look good! I’m giving this 5 stars, A for color, B for texture and C for staying power. A really fine product, I will anxiously await their new colors and am totally going to try more from this line.. just a really good product!!
Great write up Lindsay :)
Great post, Lindsay!
I got to try out the Magnolia shade and it’s a medium rose shimmer that applies sheerly, but still pigmented enough for this finicky gloss wearer. I like that the little bit of shimmer gives it dimension, but isn’t too obvious. My lips just looked juicier. The gloss had a muted strawberry scent to it, which I’m a fan of anything vanilla or fruit scented, so that was a win for me. I like that the gloss was smooth and not sticky. This vain reviewer applies it before her nightly walk and is happy to report that when the wind blows her hair into her face, it doesn’t stick to her lips.
Like Tyna said, if you want a little more sophisticated evening look than just the gloss, this looks gorgeous applied over Wet n’ Wild 666 lipliner (applied to the entire lip).
I now want the Java shade…it is calling to me…
