Naked Bodycare – review

The British are coming! The British are coming! And let’s hope they get here soon! We’ve been a little obsessed with England this last week and it’s no wonder. Our review team has been scrubbing down with Naked, the cheekiest, natural bath and body line in all of England. Sadly, they have yet to make the trans-Atlantic jump to be available here on the continent. But keep your eyes open for the next British Invasion and keep your fingers crossed that Naked bodycare will be leading the way!

Our British readers should already be familiar with this affordable line of beauty products “crammed with gorgeous high quality botanical extracts” and created with plant and mineral derived ingredients. You’ll find creamy, foamy body washes with tantalizing scents (like White Ginger and Minty Menthol), shampoos and conditioners tailored to your hair type (straight or curly, normal to dry, etc) as well as soothing body butters, exfoliating scrubs and daily face washes. Every item in the Naked line is free of parabens, petrochemicals, sodium laureth / lauryl sulfate (SLS) and phthalates and is made from at least 97% natural materials.

Why only 97%? The ever helpful team at Naked provides the answer on their fun and informative website:

“Well, the remaining 3% is made up of things like the preservative system (stops the product going bad after opening) plus things like emulsifying agents which are necessary to stop ingredients from separating (we don’t like divorce). However some of our products are actually 99.5% natural as they didn’t need as much help to behave.”

The founder of Naked, Louise Potts, a mom of two, was unable to find affordable and natural body products for the whole family (her kids had very sensitive skin). Louise took matters into her own hands and launched her own line. The philosophy behind Naked was clear from the start a brand that is safe, natural and free of harmful chemicals that can be used by women, men, babies, children, even pets. Additionally, Naked is fairly priced so it’s accessible to all for daily use.

Refreshingly, Naked is also a brand that “doesn’t take itself too seriously despite its strict criteria.” You’ll find this cheeky attitude all over the Naked line, from the just chatting vibe on their informative website, to the playful product descriptions on the bottles, to the doodle like images that classify their categories, especially the sassy bum representing the body products that has become synonymous with the Naked line.

Our stateside team got a peek at some of the most popular products in the Naked line, including luxurious body butters and foamy body washes in their signature scent Coco de Mer (a coconut based scent) and the absolutely divine Heaven Scent Rose Body Wash. If you love fresh, soft rose scents – this is for you. It’s a modern take on rose that has become my go-to wash (How am I going to restock this? Naked, get thee to the States soon!)

By the way, those of us outside England and left Naked-less can join the Naked Facebook page for a further peak at the line, the latest in quirky Brit pop culture or just to leave a meassge on the wall begging for access to Naked. And yes, this sweet and snarky line can be followed on twitter, as well!

The team will be here soon to let you know what product they tested and their thoughts on this exclusively British line. In the meantime, we would love to hear from our friends in England. Have you made Naked a part of your daily routine?

  1. What a fun website! Very informative healthwise and in a cute way – love all their graphics. I also like how they say on their products “we don’t believe in testing our ingredients on Bambi, Lassie, or Skippy.” Ok, I’m an idiot – what would Skippy be? A dog maybe? Anyways, I tested the 97% natural 24 hour naked coco de mer body butter. Wow – what a great cream – everything a butter should be. The first thing I noticed when I opened the jar was the potent scent. It’s coconut plus some other floral scents – passion flower it looks like. This sounds like it should be just intoxicating to me – right up my alley. Unfortunately, there’s something in the scent that doesn’t agree with me. At least in the top notes of it when I first smell it. After it’s been on my skin a bit, it does smell really pretty, but at first, it hits me personally in not such a good way. (But anything too floral doesn’t agree with me). I’d have been happier with the scent if it was mostly coconut. On to the consistency – this is a home run in my book. Incredibly thick – truly like butter – but not greasy whatsoever. It goes on so smooth and rubs in perfectly and leaves absolutely no residue. But it does what it claims – moisturizes your skin ALL day long. This will be nice in the winter when you need the moisture as well as smelling like a tropical escape. It is very softening to the skin as well. So I’m loving having this, I do wish I liked the scent more – if I did, I’d be wearing it constantly – so that makes me really want to try another scent or some of their other products. Unfortunately with them not being available in the states – can we even order this? I noticed on the site there’s a shopping basket, but the prices are in pounds. I went to a converter site, and I think the body butter costs about $7.77 in US dollars, but am not sure that’s correct or if it can even be bought. So, I’m rating this 3 stars for me personally. One star off for the scent, and 1 off for the availability. But the other stars are very strong in my opinion for the texture, lastability, and moisture.

  2. Duh, Lassie’s the dog…I still can’t figure out Skippy… Oh, and I also love how they say you can use their products on the whole family – kids and pets…don’t want to try the lotion on my newborn yet, but would love some shampoo for the dog!!

  3. I received the Naked Gorgeous Curls Curl Taming Cream to review, and I’ve got to say that my expectations were a bit neutral for this product. I’ve seriously lost count of how many styling products I’ve tried over the years for my long, inconsistently wavy hair. So with cautious optimism I embarked on the journey of testing this product for two weeks.

I had never heard of Naked products before, but the first thing that caught my eye was that this product is 97% natural and contains no silicones. That already is a HUGE plus for me because silicones tend to weight down my already fine hair and leave my waves anything but springy and full of life.

The second thing I noticed about this product is how thick it is. I had to squeeze pretty hard on the tube to get out a few pea-size drops of product to coat my hair. The directions say to use enough to coat your damp hair from root to tip, but I found that although this product is thick, it warms in your palms and putting in your hair is actually a breeze. I immediately loved the feel of my hair when I ran this product through it, and it was very easy to comb it through as the directions recommend.

After I worked it through my hair, I let my hair air-dry as I often do. I started to scrunch my hair and what I saw was amazing. I don’t know how they did it, but this product literally transformed my hair from flat, inconsistent waves to long, beautiful ringlets. I watched this transformation literally before my eyes. With every “scrunching” motion of my hands, my waves turned into RINGLETS. I am not kidding. At first I thought this was just too good to be true and that once my hair dried, the beautiful, consistent curls would fade into frizzy out of control waves. But NO. My hair dried into the most beautiful, amazing curls I have ever seen. And they stayed that way ALL DAY without the help of any other products.

Now, let me remind you that I’ve tried enough styling products for curly hair to fill a large closet. But I have got to say that I’ve never used a product that has worked so beautifully on my particular kind of hair. I have long, fine hair but lots of it. My roots are oily but my ends are dry from color treatments. Like I said earlier, I have natural waves but they need a lot of TLC to get them to look consistent and I have to work really hard to get that coveted beachy look.

That said, Naked Style Gorgeous Curls Curl Taming Cream is now my holy grail styling product. I love every single thing about it, from the beautiful, natural fragrance to the consistency and ease of use. But what I love most of all is that this is the ONLY product I need to use to get the curls of my dreams. Everything I’ve used up until this point simply pales in comparison. Oh and I also love the way this product rinses out of my hair. Odd, I know, but I felt like I should mention that my hair feels wonderful in the shower when I’m rinsing this out! It feels soft and moisturized and it makes me think that this product is actually doing some long-term good for my hair.

Lastly, let me say that my boyfriend immediately noticed a change to my hair. The first time I used this he said, “Wow, look at those pretty curls! Did you do something different to your hair today?” Um, that never happens.

So will I use this product again? You’d have to pry it out of my hands at this point. This is one of the only products I’ve tested (and I’ve tested many, many products for my own blog) that has instantly become a permanent product in my routine. I have not stopped using it since I first tried it. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do when I run out because this isn’t yet available in the US. I’m already thinking of bribing one of my UK friends to ship me a carton of this ASAP.

I’ve got to say that if your hair is similar in texture to mine, and you desperately want long, consistent, beachy waves and/or ringlets, you own it to yourself to seek out this product. It doesn’t weigh down your hair at all and it magically transforms the most inconsistent waves into the most beautiful curls you’ve ever seen. I know this might sound like a bunch of hype, but the only reason I’m going on and on like this is because this product actually works in a way that I have never experienced before. I feel like going on all the curly-hair message boards to share this with all of my fellow curly-haired girls who are on a quest for that one perfect product. This is it, ladies.

Five stars from me, and I would give it ten if I could. Thank you Stef and Tyna for introducing me to my holy grail styling product. My search is officially OH-VAH.

  4. I received the Ooh La La Naked – Coco de Mer Body wash. The name alone made me excited to jump in the shower, and when I looked at the bottle, I was thrilled that is is 97% natural! YAY! I have been looking every where for natural products and it’s harder to find than you would think with everyone trying to be green lately. So I was very happy with this. Then upon further inspection I saw that the sent was from a coconut and passion flower. Coconut! Yes my fave!

So the next morning I was up early and excited to make my bathroom smell of coconut and to take my mind to the beach where it longs to be. However, the passion flower overpowered the coconut smell. So needless to say I was a little disappointed in the fragrance.

On to the lather. I was very happy with the lather consistency. I didn’t have to use a whopping amount of soap to get a lot of lather. I just put a quarter to half dollar size on my puff ball and soaped away. And that may have been to much, but I do like a lot of soap. :)

I did like this bath wash over all. The scent lasted all day and it 97% natural. The only thing I was a little sad about was the smell. I was hoping for more of a coconut smell rather than a flower smell. I’m not a big fan of flowers, as they tend to give me headaches.

I do have a word of caution, If you plan to be outdoors for the majority of the day, I would suggest not using this scent. Maybe go for the Minty Menthol, because I took a bike ride and sat outside for the evening and I was being attacked by bugs! They seemed to love the scent of the body wash! It was kind of funny, I had to move inside so I didn’t get eaten up by the pesty little guys.

  5. Wow, after reading Noveau’s review, I think it’s the first time in my life I wished I had curly hair! Don’t you love it when you find your holy grail product?

I received the Buff Up, Glowing Skin Rice Shower Scrub. Being a lover of scrubs, I was very pleased. It’s in a creamy base, which I really like. I’m kind of over oily scrubs. And it’s rice (actually it has more almond shell than rice, but I’m just happy it wasn’t salt. I’m over salt too!) And it lathers slightly and leaves you really moisturized afterward. BUT, the bad part for me? I don’t like how it smells. They say it’s citrus oils with a touch of Far Eastern Spices. Which sounds like it would be good to me, but it’s odd. It’s kind of peppery (there is black pepper in it) and kind of menthol-y. Give it a good sniff before you buy, you Brits. You might love it. Me, not so much.

  6. Hey Veronica! lol!! Thank you. :) Curly hair is a blessing and a curse sometimes. lol.

Oh and I just have to add that after I wrote this review, I went to Sally Beauty to pick up some nail polish remover and the minute I walked in the door, the Sally clerk said to me, “Wow, your hair! Are those extensions?” I laughed and said, “Yeah right!” and she said, “No, seriously. Your curls look so good, I thought for sure they were fake.”

If I can’t get someone to send me this stuff from the UK…I’ll just have to hop across the pond and get it myself. :)

  7. I really loved the look of all these products and wanted to test them all. I tried the Heaven Scent Rose Body wash. I love a good rose scent, but I’m pretty picky (too sweet or synthetic and it can smell too little, old lady-ish) However, Naked’s rose scent is exactly what I love – very fresh and very pure but not overwhelming. The body wash forms a sort of foamy/creamy lather and cleans well, without drying or tightening my skin. The rose scent lingers very softly for some time after my shower. My only issue was that I broke the bottle cap almost immediately. If you turn the cap too hard/long it breaks fairly easily. One star off in want of a packaging edit, but a solid four stars for scent, product quality and price!

nouveaucheap – wow! I’m so happy you have found the perfect product for your hair! Isn’t it the best feeling?

  8. I got to test drive Naked Rescue, an intensive repairing & renewing hair treatment. It contained Argan Oil, conditioning Meadowfoam, and UV damage protecting Sunflower extract. The package also promises that regular use can prevent hair breakage, boost resilience and shine, and help detangle. And, of course, it’s 97% natural!

Similar to other hair treatments (like hot oil, 3 Minute Miracle, etc.), you work it into your hair after your regular shampoo, comb it through, and let it hang out for 3-5 minutes. It also recommends a final rinse in cold water for added shine (I gave in and tried an icy finale but regretted it right away – I’m sorry shininess! Nothing personal!)

By the time I hopped out of the shower, I had tangle-free, nice-smelling hair. My hair was softer, but I feel that my results weren’t quite as good as results that I’ve had with some other hair treatment products (though I can’t say that any of those were as environmentally or animal friendly). I feel that part of my problem was that I only was able to squeeze one treatment out of my sachet as my hair is fairly long. I would imagine that the more you use the treatment, the better the result.

  9. I was lucky enough to receive the Naked Heat Defender. First I love that its a spray! I hate getting my hands sticky with other products plus the coverage is much better. Usually, i don’t notice much right away with hair, but this product i could really see a difference as soon as i blew my hair. It gave my hair a healthier chunkier look. Which is good because even though i have a lot of hair, the actual hair is thin and this gave it the right amount of texture. I’m just bummed i can’t buy it here. I’m going to have to hoard it! This was real easy to use and gave great results. That’s awesome that it can be used on pets as well. I might have to try it on Adam my Jack Russell because his hair is like a wild boar. all dry and scratchy! I’ll let you know the results if he lets me do it.

  10. Skippy is Skippy the Kangaroo – or, officially, the Bush Kangaroo.

    See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skippy_the_Bush_Kangaroo

I bought a few Naked products in Boots (the UK’s national pharmacy/chemist chain) before I moved over to the US. I was impressed with them then, but I’ll try some others when I pop back over for a visit in November as it seems like the line has expanded quite a bit since I left.

If anyone really really wants something, let me know and I’ll try to get it for you when I’m over there…

Also, I’m wondering: If they’re sold at Boots in the UK, maybe they’ll be picked up at some point here eg by Target or CVS, who stock other lines available at Boots (eg Boots No.7 and the Sanctuary spa’s range). Fingers crossed!!

I Tried out the Detox Shampoo and Starflower body wash while on a visit to Scotland. LOVE LOVE LOVED! I assumed I would be able to order via their website once I got home but, alas, they don’t ship outside of the UK. They asked if I had any friends in the UK that would be willing to be a “middle man” but, I know absolutely no one in the UK. Please please PLEASE come to the USA Naked!

I am blessed (???) with curly but very fine, dry and demanding hair. I’ve tried hundreds of styling products before I’ve found one that would be fairly satisfying. But it was discontinued and so I panicked. I was in urgent need for a replacement so I just grabbed 1st thing that came in front of my eyes in local drug store. I just followed “97% natural ingriedents”. pharase. That was Naked Style Gorgeous Curls curl taming cream. I was very very sceptical, but to my suprise, I found out that THIS IS IT!!! Not pricey, but natural, without silicones. My fine, usually falat hair, got a lot of volume, curls were defined and truly transformed. This cream leaves hair very soft and shiny, without oily resididue and not crunchy at all. Just pretty. It smells great, it’s natural and you only need tiny amount to create great hair. There is a down side though. It does not provide protection from humidity. In wet weather or after a bath, the hair absorbes water and it looks different. Not bad, but different. My previous product would protect me from this. But overall, it is great and I will not be spending so much on hair products from now as it cost only about 5 quid. My onlu hope is, that they will not discontinue this one, as it often happens to my favourite products…..
