We ask how cute? MAC answers, quite! The Quite Cute review

photos, swatches and thoughts…

photos: we heart this

You hear that? It’s the sound of giggles and cheers everywhere because today MAC releases Quite Cute! The new 23 piece collection may just be the most aptly named launch yet, it’s cute defined. Think everything little girls of made of. Now take a spoonful of mod and a huge dollop of kawaii and you have a launch so sweet it just may give you a cavity!

The collection is also super cool. Cool as in fab, but more so, cool as in warm toned girls are going to feel a bit left out. That’s not to say there aren’t products you can wear, there are. But cool girls – this one’s for you.

So, just how cute is Quite Cute? I give you, the Mineralize blushes

Miss Behave

Sakura

Yes, that’s a heart in the center of each. Couldn’t you just die? We got a look at two of three limited edition blushes in Quite Cute. Miss Behave is a beautiful, sheer peach with a shimmery green heart. On my medium skin, all I saw was shimmer, not much color. But I think this will look beautiful on pale skin. Sakura is lilac pink with a shimmery magenta heart and a satisfy amount of pigment (it’s the blush I’m wearing in the photo below).

Candy Yum-Yum, Play Time, Quite Cute

Lipsticks

Here are three of the five rather extreme lipsticks of Quite Cute (four are limited edition, Saint Germian is a repromote). Candy Yum-Yum is neon pink with a matte finish. And they do mean neon, this looks like it’s electric. Like a lot of mattes, I also found that it magnified imperfections (like dry lips). Combine that with it’s intense brightness and I found it pretty unforgiving when applied full strength. But, when I dabbed it on and added a gloss, this shade is gorgeous and a real stand out in the launch.

The two cremesheens of the bunch are Quite Cute, a cool lilac (very similar to I ♥ U plushglass) and Play Time, a magenta purple. Like Candy Yum-Yum, I had the best luck applying just a wash of color and adding gloss (even though the cremesheen finish is much more forgiving than matte). But honestly, these paired with my warm skin made a pretty sickly combo.

Ice Cream Cake, Little Girl Type, I ♥ U

Nail Lacquers and Plushglasses

The launch contains three creme nail lacquers. Ice Cream Cake is pure bubble gum pink. I found the formula to be a bit thick on this one. But once applied (two coats on both of these shades) the color was quintessential pink. Little Girl Type was my favorite of the two, and had a thinner formula as well so it was easier to apply. It’s a beautiful cool lilac (again, very similar to I ♥ U plushglass and Quite Cute lipstick).

Speak of the cute devil – I ♥ U is the only of the four limited edition plushglasses we got to take a look at. I’m a big plushglass fan, it’s probably my favorite plumping gloss. They have a vanilla mint scent to them and leave your lips feeling tingly and yes, plumper! The cool lilac shade is very sheer and creamy, so I think it’s the most wearable adaptation of this color in the whole launch. (Check it out over a nude pencil in my photo below, pretty right?)

Cutie Eye Shadow Quad

Eye Shadow Quad

Cutie is it’s name, and guess what it is? Super tough! Just kidding…it’s cute. Moshi Moshi is a pale and frosty green with chunky shimmer (and lots of it!) Goody Goody Gum Drop is a light pink that disappeared on my eyes. Neither of those shades worked for me. But Boycrazy, a pale lavender with silver shimmer, and Azuki Bean, medium toned gray violet, worked surprisingly well on purple-fussy me. Overall, the shadows are all on the sheer side in varying degrees and I do prefer a bit more pigment personally.

In Synch, Naked Liner

Lip Pencils

I’m rarely excited about lip pencils but these were my favorite part of the launch! (All three are repromotes.) I checked out two of the three pencils Naked Liner is a hardcore nude lip lover’s dream. The equivalent of putting concealer on your lips! It totally blocks out your lip color, allowing for a pure, pale nude lipstick or gloss to go to town. In Synch is a light yellow based pink, so it’s like a pale coral. I’m a fool for coral so I instantly fell for this.

Here’s a closer look at Quite Cute…

Overall: I think Quite Cute well lives up to it’s name. But with it’s extreme pale pastel shades, I also think it’s a collection that will speak loudest to the younger set, and a cool toned younger set at that. That said, this warm toned elder found a few gems within!

Quite Cute is available in store and online from April 7 through May, 2011. Readers and testers, will you be adding a bit more cute to your life?

How cute? So cute! The promo pics for this collection were totally and completely adorable, I’ve been so excited. While initially I was disappointed that the collection was so cool, like @Stef I’ve noticed a few gems in the collection for we warmer gals.
I’m a total sucker for mineralize blushes, and the addition of the heart is just slaying me. The little green heart in Miss Behave?! So cute! I’m also loving Ice Cream Cake (what a perfectly girly pink), Playing Koi, and Saint Germaine. MAC, how do you do it over and over again?!

Lucky me, guess who just got “Miss Behave” in the mail? It’s just as adorable in person as it is in photos!
Even with my pale skin I still get more shimmer than color, so Miss Behave has just become my favorite new highlighter. The finish is smooth, easily blended, and lasts all day. I’m in love! Run, don’t walk for this one! 5 Stars!!

A new MAC collection can make me rush to the store in a frenzy, and Quite Cute is no exception. The colors remind me of the Tinkerbell makeup I played with as a toddler… and in a good way! From your swatches, it’s the lilacs that are tempting me. I love a lilac blush, and Sakura is so pretty on you despite your warm-toned complexion. I’m positive I would love it. That little heart alone makes it a must-have. And Little Girl Type is the perfect spring nail polish. I think it would be great for a pedicure. Thanks for all the temptation @stef – can’t wait to check everything out in person!

I’m a sucker for bright lipsticks as @mandaleem knows! I adore Madly Magenta and I had my heart set on Candy Yum Yum the moment I saw it. It’s selling out quickly on other sites, but it’s just made it to the MAC site(I snatched it up at 3am). Anyone considering Candy should grab one quick.

Looking at the rest of the collection I wish I had the extra funds to pick up Miss Behave and the palette as well. I’m fairly pale which lends well to this collection. It is adorable overall!

@stef – You look so girlie in your pic–those are great colors on you! The purple shadows make your blue peepers pop :)
Dear Sakura and Playtime, please be mine? How cute are these??? I’ve never tried MAC’s mineralize blush, but Sakura is calling my name—the little heart in the center is too precious! As for Playtime, I don’t typically go for a violet/purple lippie, but that one makes me want to believe it could work on me. I typically shy away from pastels, but I think I need to hit my local MAC counter and check these out. Too pretty!

Pretty Cute! I was drawn to the lip pencils too – and think that maybe Miss Behave just may work with my skin tone; I’ll have to see in person. MAC is always inventing or as you say it so aptly- re-promotes. I’ve never seen collections move in and out and resurface so fast. Once again, great job with the post @stef, especially the nail polish-impressive!

Agreed that @stef looks quite cute herself in that picture – love the hair too!

The MAC Quite Cute collection is super cute! I am loving the look of the Lip Liners – my very first “fancy” lip liner was MAC and they really have a great formula. Smooth, great pigment and great at locking in glossy lip colors on top.

I’m also liking the look of the Nail Lacquers – both hues look so pretty – and Little Girl Type looks like a soft cool hue that will work with my fair, cool skin.

Can’t wait to see the entire collection in person but these photos and swatches are a great preview!

Ahh, yes, I’m a warm girl too, so there are very few things I can wear without looking ‘off’ in this collection for sure.
I love the look you pulled off with the colours @Stef
But I love Moshi Moshi! Such a nice colour… too bad its only sold in the quad. Oh well. I’ll definitely need to pick up Naked Liner though!

      Hi @brittaholic
It’s true, warm girls like us will have to be a bit inventive to pull most of this off.
      But it can be done!

I’m so excited for Surf Baby this summer, which I’m sure will be warm, warm, warm!

Great opening pic, Stef! This collection is adorable looking in the bottles and pans…it will definitely be tough for most of us to pull off, though. The swatches look quite a bit different than the colors in the product! In the tube Play Time looks like a color I’d never go for, but on your skin, it looks beautiful – and your skin in that pick looks about like mine. In Synch looks perfect on your skin, too in that pic. On first glance Sakura looked like the item I’d buy in the pan, but it doesn’t show up as much as I’d like on your arm – that’s one I’ll have to check out in person – but I’m definitely looking for a light pink blush. I love Ice Cream Cake – that’s a no-brainer. The eyeshadow quad looks gorgeous – I doubt it’d work for me – but I can see Erin rocking those colors for sure! So a really good looking collection, MAC, but if it’s wearable will have to be determined in person – I wouldn’t order anything online this time!

I loved almost all of this collection, and I’m definitely not part of the younger set, but these colors work for me. I passed on the quad, cuz when I swatched it, it seemed to lacking in pigmentation, but seeing it on the eye, I wonder if passing was a mistake. great pictures.

SO pretty! But so not for me! Boo. I think Ice Cream Cake is the only color I’d try, everything else is do cool and pastel. But all very pretty. I really like the hearts in the center of the blush, they’re adorable and the names and theme of the collection are great, very kawaii! :-) I love MAC’s names, always so fun.

A little birdie sent me the Play Time lippie to try out and let me just say, I was pleasantly surprised. This is definitely one you need to try on. Just seeing this in the tube really doesn’t do this shade justice. In fact, it can look a little bit scary. However, once swiped on lips it is TRANSFORMATIVE. Seriously. Usually coral is the main shade that brightens up my whole face, but pale purple lipstick is being added to my list of surprise beauty finds. I don’t think I could get away with wearing it past the Spring/Summer, but the color really pops against my pale skin/dark hair. Loving this! 5 stars!

That same little birdie sent me Sakura, the lilac pink blush, to check out! I was so pleasantly surprised, as well. I love this and it’s my go-to blush now for the spring/summer. I would not have thought I could’ve worn the color very well but it gives a rosy glow to my cheeks that is perfect. I’m fair with pink undertones, but also consider myself a neutral. There’s some slight olive in my skin too, and this still works just fine on me. I would just say check it out in person if possible to be sure it works for you, but I think I’m successfully wearing it in all sorts of color combinations. It’s a winner to me – and I’d buy it over and over! 5 stars!

I, too, had a birdie (awesome birdie friends we have here) send me Candy Yum Yum lipstick which is BEYOND intense. So neon your eyes might hurt. It’s truly unique and really fantastic though. It is matte which indeed shows imperfections BUT like Stef said, a gloss changes things big time. I also prefer to dot it on rather than smear it on because it lessens the intensity but still gives a great deal of color. To be honest, this is not a lipstick for shy gals or those who prefer safe colors. I think this is a fun lipstick. Not for everyday, but it is gorgeous and from what I have been seeing on the interwebs, kind of hard to find right now. Eek! If you want it still, go find it asap :)

I had the delightful pleasure of testing Cutie the eyeshadow quad and I’m really enjoying the colors! While the green and pink don’t provide a ton of pigment, when put with the Azuki Bean I thought it made a fabulous spring look for me. Boycrazy is also quite striking and looks great too with Azuki Bean. All in all MAC pleases me again with more fun colors to add to my growing collection. You just can’t beat them when it comes to their shadows… 4 solid stars from me only because I wanted a little more pigment in a couple of the colors, but loving them nonetheless!

I received the “I Love You” Plush Glass. And I was very dubious at first. I love purples! But this is so pale. So I was really worried. But this stuff is great! Granted I would probably not wear it alone. But it layers beautifully over a large variety of colors. And it morphs them into super cool new colors. I love how long-lasting, non-drying, and non- sticky this stuff is. An overall great gloss-4 stars from me!!

I got to try Ice Cream Cake nail polish, and I love it! I’ve used it many times this summer. It’s a good pink that works well with my summer wardrobe, and its bright enough that I certainly notice it when I have it on. It does take 3 coats of polish to not be streaky, and because of that I’ll take it down to 4 stars. I love this color and will enjoy using it regularly though out the summer, and can’t wait till winter to use it to cheer myself up.
