Fighting with your hair? Smooth things over with the Bamboo Smooth Collection!

Alterna: Bamboo Smooth Collection photos: we heart this

Many years ago, my hair and I finally came to an agreement.
Hair: “Stop fighting me and I’ll stop making you look stupid in public.”
Me: “Done.”

Since then, I’ve let my natural curls do their thing. I don’t use harsh shampoos, always use conditioner and have learned to blot and then air-dry my hair (no towel-drying or using a hair dryer). And we’re both much happier. In accordance with the deal with my hair, I try to use nice, gentle, Green Monday approved products that help it be as healthy as possible. Luckily for me and my hair, I was sent some Alterna products from their Bamboo collection to test for my latest wht review.

Alterna is a line that started in 1997 and has been a pioneer ever since. The first to use THC-free hemp seed oil in hair care products? That’s Alterna. Anti-aging products for hair? They started it. Sulfate-free hair care products that are all the rage? Yeah, they’ve been doing that since 05.

The Bamboo collection contains three lines, Smooth, Shine and Volume to help lock in on your main concern. I tried three products from the Smooth line; the Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner and the Kendi Oil Pure Treatment Oil.

Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner and the Kendi Oil Pure Treatment Oil

First things first, let’s talk about the Bamboo Smooth Anti-Frizz Shampoo ($20). Like the other items in the Smooth line, this shampoo uses Organic Bamboo Extract (one of our most resilient botanical resources) to increase hair strength and encourage healthy hair. The Shampoo was gentle on my hair, but did it’s job and lathered well. Who doesn’t love a good lather? (Especially from a green shampoo!)

The Bamboo Smooth Anti-Frizz Conditioner ($20) was great, thick but not goopy, and it allowed for nice coverage. This super moisturizing conditioner is made for unruly hair (yay!), yet still rinses cleanly away.

Best of all, with regular use of the Anti Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner my hair is feeling stronger after just a month!

However, it’s the Kendi Oil Pure Treatment Oil ($24) that is my favorite. This lush oil is rich with strengthening Organic bamboo extract, and just a few drops adds shine, hides split ends and flyaways and protects hair from further damage. Oh, and it’s multi-functional too; a styling product that can double as a conditioning treatment, this little wonder is great used either way.

Applied as a hair treatment, it helps repair locks that have been damaged by the environment or styling. I used it as I would a hot oil treatment and was really pleased with the results – softer, more manageable, shiny hair.

As a styling product, I replaced my normal silicone serum with the Kendi Oil and only needed about half the amount for the same results. The oil keeps the frizzies in check without weighing hair down (although it is best for medium to thick hair – fine haired gals can use very sparingly). It also has a lovely light smell, VERY faint but it has a warmth to it that’s comforting.

Our review team got to try sample some items from the Bamboo Shine line, a collection geared to produce the shiny, glossy hair of your dreams. I can’t wait to see what they think of Alterna’s latest, especially the Kendi Oil infused Luminous Shine Mist (looks perfect for those fine haired ladies) and the new Luminous Shine Shampoo and Conditioner!

Pros:
A clean and light scent that reminds me of sun-warmed glass.
Controls hair with a light feel, never heavy.
Hair feels healthier and stronger.

Greens
The bamboo extract and kendi oil in these products are Eco-Certified and certified organic.
They are also Fair-Trade compliant and the sale of these sourced ingredients help support their of local communities.
Formulated without parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes, phthalates, GMOs or triclosan.

Cons:
The Kendi Oil is dispensed with an eye dropper which is drippy and MESSY.
The shampoo and conditioner would benefit from a bottom dispenser rather than top. (Also, the shampoo makes a rude noise when stored upright that you cannot convince your husband that did not come from you.)
A little pricey, but Kendi Oil is worth every penny.

Overall, Alterna’s Bamboo line is lightweight, eco-friendly line has my hair healthier and happier!

  1. It’s funny you mention having a conversation with your hair, because I’m constantly talking to my hair, but it never listens! I am always begging and pleading with it to tell me how to fix it, but it’s like an unruly teenager and it just scoffs at me and does the opposite of what I tell it to do:(

Anyway, I haven’t tried Alterna but it sounds really good. I’m always on the look out for new sulfate-free shampoos, and the oil treatment sounds exciting too.

    1. Oh, it’s stopped making me look stupid, but I didn’t say that it behaves.

I think you’d like the Alterna line, Jeni! My hair really does feel stronger; whether it actually is or I’ve just stopped damnaging it so much, I don’t know! :-)

  2. This line sounds really, really great for my curly frizz prone locks! I am super excited to give it a try-especially the oil! Great review @lyssachelle!

    1. Oooo, you’ll love the oil, Kellie. Use a light touch and ignore the dropper gives you fits and you’ll be SO in love….

  3. This whole line really got my frizzy head’s attention. I’ll be on the look out for this. Sounds like really great stuff! Great review @lyssachelle!!

    1. Thanks! I really am a fan, and sad that my bottles are almost empty… :-)

  4. This IS a great post, @lyssachelle !

I’m a longtime fan of Alterna’s products, so I was excited to test their Bamboo Smooth Kendi Oil Dry Oil Mist, a very lightweight oil that really does make my hair shiny, soft and manageable without weighing it down. It sprays out in a fine mist, which keeps the mess to a minimum. I’m able to use just the right amount to fight frizz without making my hair look oily or flat.

The only thing I wasn’t crazy about was the scent, which is pleasant but always makes me sneeze for some reason. In an unscented version, this would be the perfect finishing spray. 4 stars.

    1. Thanks! And I’m glad you got to try the mist, that’s next on my “WANT IT” list. It sounds like it’s perfect for those days when you need a little extra frizz control midday, or you just don’t want to have a lot of product in your hair…

  5. Oh I was so tempted to test the Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner (matching S&C is one of my fave items to test!) but I knew the Anti-Frizz was not a match for my fine, thin hair. I’m glad it went to a good home!

Now, however I want to get my hands on Alterna’s newest Bamboo line – Abundant Volume – that sounds perfect for my limp locks! I’ve only heard great things about Alterna, so the matching set is going to the top of my shopping list.

    1. I’m glad your loss is my gain! :-)

And honestly, I’m super impressed with Alterna as a whole. I wasn’t familiar with them before, but now that I am I think they’re a great company!

  6. Ooh @Lyssachelle , can you come and mediate an agreement between my hair and I? We’ve been at an impasse for about 26 years now…

While I’m waiting for you to get here I’ll have to check out Alterna! I’ve never heard of this brand before and I’m a sucker for new shampoos, “green” shampoos especially!

And seriously, you’re cracking me up with the rude bottle noises because my husband would be equally unconvinced, LOL! I can imagine the conversation now…

  7. I just read about this line! Sounds amazing…I’m trying to go green with my hair care as well :)

  8. I’m into the sulfite free shampoos – my hair always gets thicker when I use them. It has just been hard to find a good one. Looks like this it is!

  9. Reading your comment, was just topping on the cake. I used so much products and it just continued to damage my hair. I bought so much leave-in conditioners, hoping that it would do what it acutally says on the bottle. But it contunues to make my hair frizz and look poofy… Don’t like that damage look, tried cutting and layering my hair to get rid of all my dead weight split ends.
Finally i went on Sephora to order me the best eyeliner that I need to have, perversion from urban decay. Sephora had 3 smples for free, so I took advantage of their sales and I tried our Bamboo products that came in 3, shampoo, conditioner and oil treatment. Omgoodness.. It was off the hook exceedingly magnifical perfecto. I tell you, I used it once and I am already excited to go to Sephora to buy my must have shampoos.. My hair is very polynesian curled out and these products has tremendously worked out what they put out on the label. I love it..
