BPAL for Japan

we heartsters of we heart this know we’re huge fans of indie darlings and cult icons, BPAL. Not only do we love their never-ending line of dark, moody, romantic oils, we also adore their DIY (and do it your own way) vibe, artistic stylings, love of literature and big ol’ heart.

BPAL was a generous contributor to wht’s Raffle for the Rescues and their community supported our efforts in a big, big way. It’s no surprise that the kind-hearted people over at BPAL rushed to do something for those suffering in Japan.

Last week, BPAL made the unusual move to shift their calendar and release one of their highly anticipated, limited edition collections, Holding Back the Night a few months early in an effort to help those suffering in Japan. This collection of dark musks mixed with spices, fruits and flowers was “inspired by the vivid beauty” of Japanese artist Taiso Yoshitoshi’s imagery.

This series is now available and all proceeds from the online sales of these five scents benefit Doctors Without Borders. If you always wanted to purchase a BPAL scent, but didn’t know where to start, we highly suggest purchasing one of the five oils:

• Kusunoki Tamonmaru Masatsura Surprising a Ghost – deep blue musk, olibanum, passion flower, galbanum, immortelle, and sweet myrrh.
• Lord Teishin with a Demon Behind a Screen – blood red musk, Spanish mandarin, candied red fruits, Chinese geranium, red pepper, and effervescent tangerine pulp
• Ii No Hayata Kills the Nue at the Imperial Palace – brown musk, antiqued amber, black pepper, tolu balsam, and West Indian Bay
• Minamoto no Yorimitsu Cuts at the Earth Spider – toasted sandalwood, tobacco flower, teakwood, castoreum accord, bourbon vanilla, and patchouli
• Enlightenment of the Courtesan Jigokudayi – silken coconut, angelica, soft golden incense, tiare, carnation, and Asian pear

The five oils ($23 each) in the Holding Back the Night collection will run through May 19th, so act fast. One final note, Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab will also be donating proceeds from all March sales of their Shanghai and Kyoto perfume oil blends from the Wanderlust collection to the American Red Cross.

  1. I adore this. Considering the cult status that BPAL has among their admirerers, I know these would sell out fast even if they weren’t for charity.
And for those who are new to BPAL, their Kyoto and Shanghai scents are among the “Wanderlust” section on their website. I’ve smelled Kyoto and it’s soft and lovely. Defintely worth the purchase.

Thank you Tyna and Stef for continuing to showcase great products with a cause!

    1. Thanks for the reminder on where to find Kyoto and Shanghai – I’ve updated the post and included a link!
