For my first venture into Green Monday, I jumped at the chance to review Dr. Hauschka cosmetics. Because healthy makeup is something that I really support. Don’t get me wrong, I try to make green choices whenever I can. But I’ll be the first to admit, I find myself buying things from time to time that I know are not good; for either me or the environment! But as for cosmetics, think about it, you’re putting it on your face. Near your eyes, on your mouth. Doesn’t it make sense that you want it to be as pure as possible?
Dr. Hauschka are well known for their body line. As well they should be, they’ve been making it for over 40 years and are a leader in the field of natural, good-for-you products. (And popular with our testers too.) But I was less familiar with their cosmetics. I happily discovered that the same high, organic standards are met with their makeup as well.
With a botanical and natural mineral ingredient list that takes it’s cue more from the farm than a lab, the products not only enhance your beauty, they nurture your skin. Filled with extracts of biodynamic, organic and ethically wild-harvested botanicals, they don’t just cover your skin but help it glow at it’s natural potential. They advise “Live life naturally. Live life beautifully.” It’s easy to see how that’s possible with such high quality products as these!
Of course, quality has it’s price. But this is not a drugstore line, filled with ingredients you can’t pronounce. Think of it as an investment in your skin. Just as you should when you purchase skin care.
We received an array of naturally beautiful items to test…
Volume Mascara – Natural mascaras make more sense to me than any other cosmetic item. I mean, I can’t count the number of times I poked myself in the eye with my wand! This won’t make me any less clumsy, but at least I know what I just got in my eye! Beeswax and rose and candelilla waxes are combined with silk powder to plump and protect lashes and Neem leaf extract strengthens lashes. All the while being smudge resistant.
Lip color – These are a brilliant lipstick meets gloss hybrid that can be applied by brush or finger. Four shimmering, semi-transparent tones carefully chosen from nature to highlight your natural coloring. Brimming with ingredients your lips will crave; extracts of anthyllis, carrot and rose hip to keep them moist and nourished and rose and jojoba waxes to soften and protect.
Translucent Makeup – A gentle liquid foundation that doesn’t cover your skin, rather enhancing it to bring out skin’s naturally radiant glow. Anthyllis, carrot and witch hazel extracts calm, nurture and tone. Mineral pigments blend uneven pigmentation. And Avocado and Jojoba oils join rose wax to moisturize and protect.
Rounding out the extensive list is their gorgeous Rouge Powder and handy eyeliner duo.
Review Team; what are your thoughts on Dr. Hauschka cosmetics? Think they’ll help you to live life beautifully, naturally?
I chose the Dr. Hauschka eyeliner duo to test. One side is a medium smoky grey, the other side white. I picked it because I have been wanting a white eyeliner to line the lower inside rim of my eye and have tried a few, but they’ve always made my eyes irritated. I figured a high quality, organic liner would be the way to go, and it was! No more tears.
These Kajal liners glide on your lids super smoothly, no dragging at all. They blend really well too.
Only drawback? Kind of expensive ($30) But, in it’s defense, I keep my liners standing up in a glass on my vanity and this one towers over the others by over an inch. So, it is way longer than typical liners.
As I said above, quality has it’s price! And the fact that I don’t cry it right off my eyes makes it worth it.

I received the Volume Mascara which i’m always happy to try out a new mascara, mostly because its really the only makeup that i wear (along with foundation) on a regular basis. I of course heard of this brand but like Stef not with makeup, more skin care. I loved the fact that the wand was long and has a thick brush. Went on very smoothly, no clumps, and had almost a broken in texture to it so it went on well for me right away. The only problem i had with it, and i’m curious if others had the same experience, as soon as i put the wand near my eye to apply, i got this strong scent that actually made my eyes water. I thought at first it was because it was the first time using it, but i noticed it the other times i used it as well. So, overall the application and the end result i was happy with, but i don’t think i would buy it only because something in it makes is too strong for my eyes. I don’t normally have sensitive eyes, so not sure what it is.
In an era where some of us are fearful of lead in our lipsticks, it was a breath of fresh air to receive Dr. Hauschka Lip Color to review. I tested “01 Beige” which is a light neutral bronzey shimmer that is perfect for lighter makeup days. I love that this product contains no synthetic preservatives (paraben free!) and no artificial scents or flavors. I was sort of expecting the scent and flavor to be strong, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find that both the scent and flavor are very soft. This lip product has a nice, light herbal quality to it and it makes you feel like you’re doing something good for your lips.
As for the lip product itself, it comes in a compact with a mirror and a tiny lip brush. Very sleek, which I like. What I don’t care for is that I have a heck of a time opening this compact. It doesn’t open easily and can chip your mani if you’re not careful. Also, I think that the price is a little steep for a sheer lipstick/gloss/balm hybrid ($23.95) but then again, you’re getting a paraben-free product that is loaded with planto extracts and uses only natural micas for coloring. So if you find a color (there are four shades available) that works for you, it could be a good investment.
I’m going to take away a star for the packaging and a star for the price point (I would be more inclined to purchase another color if it were maybe $15). Three stars for me.
I had high hopes for this product because I loved their Rose Body Oil so much; I wasn’t disappointed (terribly).
I received Dr. Hauschka’s Lip Coulour 03, a sheer, shimmery burgundy color. I wasn’t overwhelmed by the color in the box, but liked it on me. In the box it looked a little bit dated, on me it looked like a natural, deeper shade of my own lipcolor. The shimmer wasn’t too overwhelming either.
It’s really nice that this is an organic product and the scent of the Lip Colour does belie that–it’s very pleasant.
I’m not really sure why the compact includes a brush, though. It’s pretty useless.
I really don’t think that I would be inclined to purchase the product on its own because of its expense and lack of variety of colors (if there were 50 colors, I still MAY end up with this one, but I like freedom of choice). I also tend to like a little more drama on my lips (for me, natural means colorless high gloss). Also, Burts Bees makes some fine natural tint sheer lip colors for a lot less.
Final Answer: nice product, but limited selection (especially for the price); silly lip brush. If I could give half-star ratings it would be 3.5; as it is, I’m sorry but I think I have to round down to 3
Hey Sherrishera–do you find that your compact is difficult to open? I was wondering if maybe I just got a bad one because I really have a heck of a time opening it. :(
I received Dr. Hauschka’s translucent liquid foundation in no. 4 to try, and I was immediately skeptical. I was expecting it to be a near colorless foundation, but it appeared to be heavily pigmented. I worried that I would get clown-like coverage with a heavy foundation that didn’t exactly match my skin tone. I was mistaken!
I applied it to my face using my foundation brush, and blended with a sponge. As I blended, I was surprised at how well the foundation complimented my skin tone and appeared to disappear on my skin. No clown mask for me. I didn’t use a finishing powder nor concealer, but my complexion was even and it hid the redness on my nose (allergies).
I lasted most of the day except on my nose, because I was blowing it so much. It also didn’t really control shine and I was hoping it would with its natural ingredients. It also didn’t have a chemical smell that most liquid foundations have, and that was plus. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give 3.5 stars. I’m not a regular foundation wearer, so I don’t know if I would be willing to shell out $37 for another tube but I will recommend it other people do. :-)

I also tested the lip color in shade 02. The 02 shade is a light shimmery pink that reminds me a lot of Orgasm by Nars. I really love this color…way more than I like Orgasm. I find myself using it often because it’s a nice neutral color that can be worn anytime of the day. I absolutely love the scent of this lip color. It’s hard to describe, but it smells very natural…like a fresh cut flowers. I also love that it’s very moisturizing and has great staying power.
Sadly, it does have a few flaws. Like others have said, the packaging isn’t the best. This compact is tough to open. I actually did chip my freshly manicured nails trying to open this compact. I’m also not a huge fan of applying lipstick with a brush, but that’s probably the lazy side of me coming out. I just find it easier to whip out a tube and apply with one hand instead of two. The price is another turn off for me. I just don’t think I would spend over $20 on this compact.
Overall, I guess my review is a little mixed. I love the product, but am just not sold on the packaging or the price. I’ll give it 3 stars and hope for a redesign and a lower price in the future.
I tried out the Rouge Powder -The Stone Colours Collection in soft terracotta
and I love it, it’s a very natural shade, and a little goes a long way. I even used it on my eyes and it’s natural hue added a nice pink that lasted all day.
The compact is sturdy, has a nice mirror and brush. The rose scent is a nice bonus, very light and fresh. I would say it’s as nice as my other favorite blushes, (Benefit, Paul & Joe, & MAC) the only flaw I really found is the price.
I do love that it’s natural, and it goes on looking really soft, but the price is a bit steep for me.
As far as blushes go this is definitely 5 star, but because of the price I would list it as 4. Simply because I know I can get a blush as good for at least ten dollars less, and hey ten dollars….that’s a lipstick :)
Here’s the thing about this line (and all high-end, organic cosmetic lines)- they just cost more. It’s something you just have to expect. Like organic produce in the grocery store, it costs more. It’s better for you, but you pay more too. It makes sense, better ingredients, made in a more thoughtful manner-it doesn’t come cheap! Now, you can get some pretty good natural lines in the drugstores that are much cheaper, but the quality isn’t as high.
I think you just have to decide if the investment in it is worth it for you. What’s more important, saving ten bucks or using a product that meets organic standards in all manners. I think if you’re the latter kind of person, you’d be very happy with this line.
I got to test the Dr. Hauschka Lip Colour in 04. The color is a shimmery, deep chocolate, which is a color I’ve been loving lately. It’s highly pigmented and perfect for Fall and Winter. The product itself has an herbal scent that is shared by their lip balm and not unpleasant—it reminds me of cedar a little bit. It’s staying power is okay, but after eating or drinking, it’s pretty much gone. I think the little compact it is in looks cute, but I agree with other testers, the brush is useless, the compact could be hard to open and forget it if you have a manicure. Like Tiffany, I’d much rather this product be in lipstick form. I also agree that the price point is a little high. For the amount that you get, I’d say this would be great at $15. Overall, good product, okay packaging, high price tag. I hate giving it 3 stars, but the packaging and price tag make deductions necessary.
As someone who has suffered from skin issues since the dawn of time, I’ve used a lot of products to try cover up the imperfections – concealer, foundation, tinted moisturizers, all of it! Thankfully, my skin has cleared up considerably since middle school, but my skin tone is still not as flawless as I’d like it to be. Enter Dr. Hauschka’s Translucent Make-up #00. A creamy, easy-to-work-with foundation composed of natural ingredients.
The Translucent Make-up is more akin to a tinted moisturizer than a traditional foundation, so if you are looking for serious coverage or have more oily skin, this product may not be the best match for you. Personally, this is what I loved about the product – it gave me a great amount of coverage without the clown make-up feel. It left my skin looking very natural and gave it a wonderful dewy finish.
Even though I had never really gave any thought to it before, ingredients should probably be one of the more important aspects of foundation (considering your smearing it all over your face). And I genuinely think that it made a difference – my skin stayed moisturized and I broke out a lot less using Dr. Hauschka’s.
And yes, it is a bit pricey, but it’s a quality product and the 1 oz. bottle lasts a lot longer than you might expect. Overall, I really like Dr. Hauschka Translucent Make-up and I’m definitely planning on getting it again. Five stars from me!
I tested Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Volume Mascara in aubergine. I had to remember back to the movie Steel Magnolias to remember what color aubergine was. Remember the locker room scene with Oiser and Miss Clairey? It’s sort of an eggplanty purpley color. Wouldn’t necessarily be my first choice. I’m more of a black mascara person to make my non-existent lashes pop. The applicator is old school…a round brush…looks like a mini Christmas tree. You know which ones I’m talking about. The product went on well and separated my lashes beautifully. The color is not really apparent, so I’m thinking…”Why bother?” But it went on nice…so I’m not going to complain about an almost undetectible color. That being said, I typically have the same problem with all of the mascaras that I use…the first few applications are great and then a week later my lashes are clumpy and the brush is gunky. This did not seem to happen with this mascara. I LOVE it. It did separate the lashes nicely and wasn’t clumpy. At all. Even several weeks later.
The only problem that I had was that the product was not waterproof. I went to the Flyers game this past weekend and ran from the car to the Wachovia Center in torrential downpours and my mascara was halfway down my cheeks in a very unflattering way. Lack of color and waterproofing not-withstanding, I give it 4 out of 5 stars!!!!
Hi Rakisha,
I’ve been thinking about buying Dr. Hauschka’s Translucent make-up in 04, so I’m really glad you mentioned it. I was just wondering what the shade is like as I’m not sure whether it’ll match me or not. I’m an NW50 in Mac, are you close to this? Thank you
