Bubbles make everything better: e.l.f. Hydrating Bubble Mask review

Lately I’ve been masking like whoa. It’s such a great way to treat and pamper the skin and sneak in a little relaxation at the same time. From snail mucus to seaweed, I’ve basically been spring cleaning my face several times a week. My only rule is: no boring, run of the mill masks allowed. Once you’ve gone panda-print sheet masks and propolis sleeping packs, there’s no turning back.
Luckily, e.l.f.—aka everyone’s favorite inexpensive beauty line—has me covered with their take on a trendy Korean mask staple: The Hydrating Bubble Mask. I was super excited to test this guy out, and it didn’t disappoint. In case you’ve never tried one before, bubble masks fizz and pop on the skin; the concept is that the mask oxygenates and allows active ingredients to really sink in deeply. Science aside, they are also just super fun, like Pop Rocks for your face.

The e.l.f. Hydrating Bubble Mask ($14) is geared towards hydration and moisture, and it is paraben and sulfate free. It starts as a clear, lightly fragranced gel; you smooth a thin layer all over your face and then wait for the magic to happen.
Within a couple of minutes, it starts to fizz, bubble and foam like a witchy magic potion. The foaming action is pretty intense, to the point where my skin felt a little itchy—but not in a bad way! Rather, it feels like my pores were really getting cleaned out. Once the bubbles subside (I like to leave this on for around 8 minutes or so), you just massage the mask and rinse off.
The end result? My skin looked fresh and bright, and it felt really clean without that this-product-has-sucked-every-ounce-of-moisture-out-of-my-face-tightness. In fact, I was pretty impressed with how soft my skin was. When my face is feeling a little dry or just has that dull look to it, I’ve been breaking this mask out and bubbling those skin woes away.
My only caveat is I’m not wild about the packaging; you press down on the lid and the product squishes out, making it a little messy. But that’s a minor detail, to be sure.
Pricewise, at around $14 for a generously sized jar, this baby will last you quite a while. Overall, I’m impressed with the price and the performance, and will continue to rotate this into my skin regimen.
To make the mask experience even better, I also gave the e.l.f. Pore Refining Brush and Mask Tool ($5) a try. I love this tool—it has a silicone spatula on one end to smooth product over your face, and a little scrubby brush on the other end to really clean your pores and gently exfoliate. It makes mask application really precise and it feels very hygienic, rather than dipping your fingers in a jar to apply. I’ve been using this practically every time I mask, and it’s a great partner in crime for the Hydrating Bubble Mask.
If you’ve been bored with the same old masking routine, I’d highly recommend this dynamic e.l.f. duo.
