It’s a bird, it’s a plane…it’s GLITTER!
Our Indie Nail Polish Spotlight is an ongoing series that highlights not only the new and upcoming stars in the indie nail polish world, but the entrepreneurs behind them. These small business owners are making their dreams come true by starting their own lines and we heart this believes that you do not need a big name to make a big splash in the beauty world!
Longtime readers of we heart this know that I am, and always will be, a comic book geek. When Fandom Cosmetics posted on Facebook about their Justice League Nail Polish Collection, I raced to the computer to purchase the set and make these glittery heroes mine all mine.
Fandom Cosmetics is the brainchild of Annie and Leigh, fans of all things geeky and sparkly. Cruelty-free with 3-free formulas, they test their product line for compatibility – meaning whether you plan on leaping tall buildings in a single bound or fighting evil in brightest day or blackest night – Fandom Cosmetics nail polish will stand up to every “BIFF!” and “KA-POW!” you throw at it.
Scarlet Speedster ($8.50) is a “sheer base filled with red hex glitter, scarlet matte circle glitter, matte yellow circle glitter, and large red circle glitter”.
Chock full of so much glitter, you’d think this would be thick or goopy, but the base is nice and thin, allowing for even application. Scarlet Speedster’s metallic large red circles contrast well with the bright yellow and tomato red matte circles, and keep it from being just a standard boring red glitter.
The Power of the Ring ($8.50) is a stunning glitter bomb with “ocean spray holographic hex, emerald green and black hex, and black circle glitter.”
This is hands down one my of favorites. The holographic glitter just sparkles, but the addition of the black glitter adds a grit to this polish that is perfect for the our favorite Guardian of the Universe.
Inspired by Superman’s costume, Son of Jor-El ($8.50) is a gorgeous glitter composed of “marine blue holographic hex, laser blue holographic hex, royal blue hex, large red circle glitter, and matte yellow dots.”
To make a Superman polish, it would be easy to just add pretty red, blue and yellow glitter and call it a day, but the different types add depth and movement to this polish that keeps it interesting at every angle.
My ultimate favorite, I am the Night ($8.50) is the perfect homage to Batman—a sheer base with black bat, matte grey, white, and yellow circle glitter and black bar glitter. I had no issues at all with I am the Night. Again, the lovely thin base helps make the glitter easy to manipulate, but is thick enough that a regular top coat was enough to smooth out the finish.
Fandom Cosmetics does indie polish, and geeks everywhere, proud. They have a really solid concept (which I LOVE, geeks unite!) and their polishes really show the time and thought that goes into composing each one. The variety of glitters, not just in size but in type and color, add a depth that you don’t often see in large glitter polishes. I’m also in love with their bases; the glitters did not feel overly chunky and often only needed one coat of topcoat to make them smooth. In the world of indie polish, Fandom Cosmetics are definite superheroes.

Alyssa is kinda geeky, kinda girly and all the way in love with her cowboy husband who can say words like, “ornery” with a straight face. She live in Texas and is working on her Masters, being a good cook and the art of looking cute in the morning AND being on time for work. Visit her blog Kind of a Mess.
I love the manicure you did with Scarlet Speedster. I am not-so-secretly obsessed with glitter nail polish (even though it’s a huge pain to remove!). These would be great on an accent nail, too. Great review @lyssachelle!
Thanks, @marissa! I, of course, geeked out over the superhero inspiration but most importantly these are really great colors in general so everyone can love them!
And have you tried the foil method for removing glitter? I spent a fourth of the time I used to removing polish now…
@lyssachelle, I have not tried to foil method, but that is a great idea for removing glitter polish. One time they had to take the acrylic sander to my nails to get it off at the salon and it left marks all over my nails–never again! I will try foil at home!
Oh no, @marissa!! That’s awful. The foil method is awesome; I usually slather my cuticles in lotion beforehand, use the least amount of cotton I can, soak it in acetone and then put it on my nail and wrap that bad boy in a little bit of foil. Two or three minutes later, the glitter usuallly slides right off, and quick rub with cotton again will get it clean. Some glitter is stubborn, not going to lie, but using foil has really made me love glitter again.
As co-editor of a beauty blog, I’m ashamed to admit I didn’t know this brand – thank you so much for the introduction! Just spent some time over at their site and love all that I see. It all comes down to formula at the end, but I am a sucker for themes and packaging! Seems like Fandom has all three! So far I want to buy the entire collections inspired by Firefly, The Hunger Games, Harry Potter and Daft Punk – so much fun!
As for the Justice League collection, I like them all, but my fave is the same as yours @lyssachelle – I am the Night is gorgeous . And it has so much depth, looking at the swatches I would guess you layered the glitter over the grey – not that you got that look from a single bottle.
Can’t wait to see what else they come out with – has there been a Buffy collection? And I hope there is a Black Orphan themed set on the horizon!
You’re right, I definitely layered all of these, with the exception of Power of the Ring. Here’s my notes with brands for each mani!
Scarlet Speedster – Orly Bonder, NYC French Tip White, Fandom Cosmetics Scarlet Speedster, NYC Grand Central Station
Power of the Ring – Orly Bonder, Fandom Cosmetics Power of the Ring, Digital Nails Glitter Food, NYC Grand Central Station
Son of Jor-El – Orly Bonder, Model City Coral Reef, Fandom Cosmetics Son of Jor-El, NYC Grand Central Station
I am the Night – Orly Bonder, Zoya Dove, Fandom Cosmetics I am the Night, NYC Grand Central Station
And as for a Buffy and/or Orphan Black collection, I literally squeed with I read that, those would be AWESOME! I’ve been hoping for a Buffy one, but Orphan Black?!? Genius!
I left a little hint on their Facebook page, maybe they’ll make us both happy! :-)
One word.. “FUN”! It just screams it!
I would love to play with some of these!
My fav is the Superman’s costume, Son of Jor-E, looks pretty cool! I know my trendy nail painting nieces would flip a few times over this!
They are definitely fun, and aren’t thick or goopy like some glitters so they would dry quickly on little hands!
Oh my gosh, these are SO cool! I can’t even pick a favorite–all of them make your nails look like tiny awesome paintings. Thanks for a great review!
Thanks, @amity! I got lots of comments on these, especially the Son of Jor-El one; people at work were like, “How did you DO that???”
My husband is gonna be so JEALOUS! Especially of the Flash polish.
:)
I’m partial to I am the Night, but I think part of that might be my Batman love. You never forget your first superhero! :-)
Glitter + nail polish + superheroes?! Could I ask for anything more?! How stinkin’ cute/awesome. I love indie nail polish brands, but haven’t actually bought any yet. This may be the one I start with, especially since you mentioned that the formula is easy to work with! It’s always disappointing to have a glittery nail polish that is GORGEOUS in the bottle, but looks awful on your fingers.
Sooo I just went to the Fandom Cosmetics website… it’s a glitter lover’s dream. Especially if you love pop culture. There are a gazillion themed collections. ERMEHGERRRRD THE AWESOMENESSS
RIGHT?!? You just want to run through a field and throw glitter in the air in celebration of the awesomeness!!
(No? Just me? I’m fine with that…)
I love this post, @lyssachelle , and keep looking at the pictures over and over. My faves are Power of the Ring (green glitter!) and I Am The Night and… oh hell, I want all of them!
It’s hard to pick one favorite! I was only planning on getting one bottle, but when I saw the whole collection, I was all, “GIMMEE!!”
Wow, I want all of these! Especially the Batman and Scarlet, so pretty and I love when things like comic book stuff that is made for women as well!
Fandom does an excellent job of making sure that the girls have a chair at the boys’ table; girls are geeks too!!! :-)
As the Mother of the Metrosexual Danger Boys, who are OBSESSED with superheros, AND adore having their toenails painted…I NEED these polishes! Thank you for teaching me the foil method…i’ve had trouble getting those little glittery suckers off before! Now I know the secret!
“Metrosexual Danger Boys” – I love it!
Seriously, the foil method has changed my (glitter) life!
I am a big comic and super hero fan. So this collection looks awesome to me. I would love to try them all! How fun!!
Fandom Cosmetics also has a Marvel line, just in case you aren’t a DC fan! :-)
