Fiberwig LX mascara – can a new brush make it better?

Ladies, there are some things I’m not willing to compromise on. For example, when I go on a date, the gentleman should always be well mannered and intelligent (handsome goes without saying!) Anything less guarantees they won’t be hearing from me again. Another thing that I have high expectations for: mascara. My mascara must not clump, must not irritate my eyes or contacts, and must not smudge even during a workout (yes, I wear makeup when I go to the gym). Should a mascara not meet all of these requirements, it immediately goes into the trash, or back to the store!

Enter d.j.v. beautenizer’s Fiberwig LX. Many of the ladies here at weheartthis loved the original Fiberwig. Like it’s predecessor, Fiberwig LX still promises to give you extra long, natural looking lashes, with no smudging or clumping, and claims it will easily come off with water. The main difference between the two is the redesigned brush, which is now curved, allowing you to easily brush on more fiber.

I thought to myself, “Well, well, Fiberwig LX. Finally a worthy suitor for my lashes!” and gave it a spin. I pulled out the wand and inspected the brush, which was covered in tiny little fibers (as you can see above). I applied one coat first, attempting to deposit as many fibers as possible by using the concave side of the curved brush, and using the wand vertically to get the lashes in the inner and outer corners. My upper lashes looked slightly longer and glossier, but my lower lashes looked really good. It’s hard to find a mascara that isn’t a globby mess on my lower lashes, but Fiberwig LX does a great job of making them stand out in a good way (as seen in the top pic)!

So I threw on a few more coats for good measure, and was pretty satisfied. Although Fiberwig LX didn’t add any volume, it did meet my three most important criteria: it didn’t clump, didn’t irritate my eyes, and it didn’t smudge. I even spent an hour and a half sweating at the gym, and Fiberwig LX prevailed.

When I attempted to remove it with warm water, it did come off with some gentle rubbing and a bit of patience. Fiberwig LX comes off in clumps rather than dissolving like most mascaras.

Fiberwig LX is definitely worth giving a try if you suffer from smudging, clumping, or difficult to remove mascaras.

  1. I also received some of this mascara and found it to be a really good formula. I don’t have very long lashes and find some mascaras overwhelm the short ones that I have with clumps. This one went on really light and was buildable.

The only thing that threw me off was the brush shape. Maybe I’m not using it correctly, but it’s a little awkward for my shape.

i appreciate your review, but on a semi-related note, would you please share your shadow & liner combo? gorgeous.

  3. Oops! I forgot to mention that I ranked this 4 stars. :)

  4. I’m always on the lookout for a newer, better mascara, so I appreciate your post, @lipglossandspandex! I’ll check out Fiberwig LX for sure. Your lashes look gorgeous.

As for dates, I’ve always thought handsome wears out fast if funny isn’t also a factor!

  5. I am a big fan of Fiberwig, the first to introduce fibers into mascara as a way to lengthen lashes. Why? It works! You can see it in the above photo. Those tiny things bind to your lashes, building upon your lashes and themselves to give you noticeably longer lashes. AND, without making them a big clumpy mess (clumps are my #1 pet peeve with mascaras. It clumps? It’s going in the trash!)

Sadly, I have to say I don’t really like the new brush. I don’t get it. Usually a brush is tapered at the end and fat in the middle. That’s what I’m used to and I use that small tip to go in and get all the tiny lashes that hide at the ends. The new brush is reversed (thin in the center, fat on the ends) and I found it kind of awkward to work with.

What I REALLY want is the old standard brush, coupled with the tiny sniper brush in some sort of dual brushed mascara. You guys remember the tiny sniper brush that Fiberwig came out with? Oh, that thing was killer at getting the little corner lashes, but the tube it was in had design problems.

So, 5 stars for the formula, 3 for the new brush, for an overall 4 stars from me.

  6. I received the new version of Fiberwig mascara to test, DJV Beautenzer LX. I truly loved the original formula and wondered what the difference was. Could it be any better? At first glance –I noticed the wand is shaped with a serious concave and a fat end. I figured the shape of the wand was intentional and I wanted to use it properly. As directed, I placed the concave side of the brush at the bottom of the lashes and slowly wiggled the brush upward to the tips of my lashes. I liked the nice glossy lash but certainly not any better than the original product. (I’m hoping that is because it’s new and not viscous yet) Am I alone in thinking that? It did go on without clumping (huge plus) and it does make your lashes look naturally longer. I still wanted to see if I could make them look longer and fuller. It took some “doing” but it’s totally achievable. Here are my tips. Get as much of the fibers on the end (tip) of the brush to hit the baby lashes. It’s important to hold the wand vertically for it to work well. I actually like holding the brush vertically – it helped to add more fibers. I normally don’t’ add mascara to my lower lashes because it just looks ridiculous and becomes a mess. This is a huge bonus with Fiberwig DJV Beautenzer LX. You can do that and lashes do look nice. Tip: To do the bottom lashes, flip the wand to the jut side of the brush by wiggling the brush side to side- Hooray, no raccoon eyes with this product. I also curled my lashes prior to applying mascara and prefer to do them that way- not after. But if you do curl after applying mascara, wait until it has dried completely remember to always curl at the base of the lash and then about half way up toward the top to get that great looking gentle curl. I would like to see this product in a dark brown color and would also like to see more fibers on the wand when it’s new. I miss the original set with the tiny sniper brush too! I give this product a four star rating.

  7. I’ve got to say, I am not a huge fan of this mascara. I’ve been using it for weeks, hoping to like it more. Unfortunately, it’s just not happening. I will say that it does stay on, even in raining weather or PMS cry days. :) And I’ve found the brush shape works just fine for my lashes. However, the cons outweigh the pros for me. It makes my lashes clump together and it’s hard to separate them. But the worst thing – it flakes quite a bit. I’m constantly cleaning up little pieces under my eyes.

    3 stars from this girl.

  8. I like the idea of Fiberwig more than I like this mascara. First, the pros: It looks natural (never, ever clumpy) and does lengthen my lashes. Also, it does come off rather easily without any special makeup removers.
Now, the cons: I’m a contact lense wearer and these fibers WILL flake off. Overall, it stays on pretty well but just one or two of these pesky fibers will spell pain when it finds itself between a contact and an eyeball. Also, the brush is awkward. I think there was a reason that most mascaras have brushes that taper…you can get it “in” the corners of your eyes. This shape may be good for its fiber-applying formula, but does seem to neglect the interior lashes.
In the final analysis I would say that if you are not a contact wearer and desire long, natural-looking lashes, this is perfect for you. If you are like me, however, and can’t have the occasional flyaway fiber wreak havoc with your vision, save this for the days that you wear your glasses. 3 stars.

  9. @lipstickandspandex– Fabulous review! Your mascara criteria is right on the money. It is hard to find one that will not clump, irritate my eyes, and not smudge even during a workout!

I look forward to reading more from you next month!

  10. @lipglossandspandex — Sorry I typed the wrong name I have no idea why I typed lipstick instead of lipgloss. Today’s trip to Fairbanks,AK has me really discombobulated.

  11. I have mixed feelings on the latest Fiberwig mascara . While I still l-o-v-e the formula, I’m not digging the new wand either.

My (big) pros: this stuff stays put and visible on my lashes all day long. So many mascaras, even waterproof ones, just up and disappear from my lashes or worse melt away from my lashes and puddle under my eyes. Every Fibwerwig mascara I’ve used has lasted all day, including the LX formula.

Plus as a contact lens wearer I have to be careful with flakes as well. And unlike @sherrishera and @katieG, I haven’t had flake issues. Maybe it wears differently on people? I like the naturally dark and long lashes this gives me too. Perfect for daily use.

The cons? I too wasn’t steady with the ‘reversed’ brush. I’m with @stef – bring back the tiny sniper! Loved that little wand. Four stars.

  12. @jacquelyn, the eyeliner is Urban Decay’s 24/7 eyeliner in Oil Slick. I’m not positive about the eyeshadow, but I think it’s Urban Decay Sellout, YDK, and Twice Baked…

@turboterp, you’re right, humor is definitely an important quality in a guy!

I agree with @Tyna, @Sherrishera, @Stef and @niftyfoodie –the brush is a little awkward. I haven’t tried the original Fiberwig and the little sniper brush, but it is tricky for me to get the fibers to apply juuuust right.

This very wet formula doesn’t clump, but if you apply too much, your lashes might stick together a bit. I get the best results when I apply a coat of Fiberwig LX, and then quickly apply a coat of another mascara (one with a spiky wand) while the Fiberwig coat is still wet. I haven’t had any problems with flaking, either.

Overall, I didn’t love the brush, but the formula is pretty good but not perfect… I’m giving it 3 stars.

  13. @lipglossandspandex The opening photo is beautiful! It shows off the mascara beautifully.

Mascara is one of those things I’m super picky about. Once I find one, I’m not willing to change. My eyes are even more hypersensitive than my skin, so mascara hunting is a pain.

I need volume, not length! I have creepy long lashes as is!

  14. @lipglossandspandex your eye makeup and lashes look fabulous! I have tried the original fiberwig before and I didn’t think too much of it. But this one looks to be worth a try. I love how it looks on your lower lashes. Mine are incredibly fine and every mascara latches + globs onto them so I just stopped trying. But you’ve given me some hope! :) Great review!

  15. I love Fiberwig and use it exclusively. It’s the only mascara that doesn’t smudge on me. Right now I have a tube of with the old brush and one with the new and improved. I find myself reaching for the original tube more often. I think the new brush is just too awkward. I agree with you @stef…one with the sniper brush would be awesome. This mascara still gets 5 stars from me. I love the product so much that even with the not so great new brush I would still buy it.

  16. I loved this mascara and maybe that is because I didn’t have the first formula/brush to compare it to. I had no issues with this brush and the formula didn’t flake or bleed – for me – this is a miracle. I feel like I have tried every mascara out there for the last year and then just stopped wearing and trying them altogether. It was hopeless until Fiberwig XL came along. Now I wear this most days. And that is the thing – I can wear it during the day because it doesn’t smudge – even when I exercise. I don’t understand this! I can even wipe my eyes – which I sometimes do by accident. It has such a natural look with just one or two coats and I can layer.
I love that everyone talks about putting it on the lower lashes because I haven’t done this in years – I can’t wait to try!!

5 stars all the way for me.

  17. Maybe Fiberwig can offer both and solve all our problems! I wanted to say that I have even fallen asleep overnight with this on an woke up looking pretty darn good! LOL! This does not flake on me either and wanted to stress that it is a great product. Did you read what are the conditioning oils are?
Panthenol: A vitamin B5 derivative that provides definition.
Natural silk extract: A silk protein derivative known for resilience.
Natural botanical extracts: Moisturizing ingredients that provide nourishment to maintain lustrous lashes
    They are pretty impressive.

  18. @lipglossandspandex – Marilyn-What a great first review! Yay! I am so happy that you are a part of the WHT family now. And I have always wondered about Fiberwig. You make it look gorgeous! I think that I will give it a try.

  19. @katezena, your lashes are long and gorgeous!

Thank you, @mandabear! And @jpal too,I’m very happy that this is working so well on my lower lashes. Those little lashes get clumpy with most mascaras.

@tiffany, I need to see if I can get my hands on this sniper brush that everyone’s talking about…

@kellie76, thank you so much! I am so excited to be a part of the wht family :) You gals are awesome, and I’m lucky to be in your company.

@dwj1, glad this mascara is working for you.

  20. @lipglossandspandex Thank you. I used to pick them out a lot (I have trichotillomania), but I’ve mainly gotten control of that part. It’s weird to see them again, honestly! The company should make a volumizing mascara and not just a lengthening one.
