Christmas tree with decorationsA little disclaimer! I moved into my first big-girl apartment on my own last year, and soon realized that the Holidays were approaching and I wanted a darn cute tree in my apartment. I am not one of those people who starts prepping for the holidays in late summer, however, having a cozy-feeling December living room and a spectacular looking tree takes some strategy and careful planning, especially if you’re a bargain queen, such as myself!

So since I’ve been completely obsessed for months with finding amazing Christmas decorations on the cheap to go with my spring green, tan, and orange-accented living room – I’m here to pass my knowledge onto the wht readers!

First things first: The Tree

I happen to be inheriting an old (artificial) tree from my mom for free…so definitely start by asking friends and relatives if they have an old tree deemed too small or large that has been sitting in their attic for 10 years. I read (in Southern Living or Martha Stewart) that it can sometimes be a really cool effect to have an oversized tree for the room to really make it the focal point of your decorating efforts. But if you’re a “Less-is-More” kinda lady, than a good 7.5 foot tree will probably suit you just fine. If you have no luck with your family, check your city’s CraigsList section…people seem to not like to take their Christmas decorations along when the move out of state and you can get trees, decorations and more (often barely used) at steep discounts.

Lights, Camera, Action!

This is one area I’m going to recommend that you splurge and buy brand new — spending hours untangling someone’s used lights or sorting through which of the 1000 bulbs on the strands is causing the whole thing to short is NOT worth your sanity. (That said, if they’re $1 at a yard sale and you have an evening and a bottle of wine to kill, I wouldn’t blame you for spending the money on the wine, instead of new lights.)

It’s all in the Sauce…I mean, The Theme

DIY Tinsel SnowflakesTo really have a pulled together look, it’s best to have at least some sort of theme in mind – whether it is just a complimentary color scheme to your living room (like me) or a bead-and-feather Mardi Gras tree – one singular idea (color, shape, style) can go a long way in giving you direction and guidance when ornament and decoration hunting.

Women’s and home/decor magazines usually have great ideas for themes: All Santa ornaments, an “edible tree” with all things related to food, snowflakes, travel, a favorite sport or team — the possibilities are infinite. A basic color scheme is a great place to start – I love the class and simplicity of all red and silver like these DIY Tinsel Snowflakes from Martha Stewart (above image) – but go with your favorite hues (and it does not have to be red and/or green!)

You can even use your favorite collection of things that is normally stored away (or not a focal point) during the year. An antique spoon collection, for instance can be elegantly tied to branches with chiffon ribbon—imagine the bling that tree will have!

Cookie Cutter OrnamentsPlus, if you’re starting totally from scratch, as I am this year, you have to be ruthless in your bargain hunting. And there’s no better bargain then FREE – so beyond your collections, scrounge around your house and your “treasure” piles for ribbons, bows, gift ornaments, costume jewelry etc that could earn new life and adorn your tree. Need more inspiration? Clean out your kitchen drawers and then check out how to make your own Cookie Cutter Ornaments (at left), once again from good old Martha.

Additionally, if your a crafty person – now’s the time for you to shine! Pull out the hot glue gun, and the sparkles and get crafting. If you have kids, get them involved too. If it’s the right size, shape and weight – you can add some glitter, a bit of ribbon for a tie and voila! it’s an ornament.

Next shop the discount stores – Ross, Target, Kohl’s, Mervyn’s, Home Goods, etc. (I found some lovely antique-looking silver and bronze bulbs at Tuesday Morning), don’t forget to check in at your local 99¢ stores. Since I was wanting an orange color scheme (so not a traditional Christmas color) I made sure to snag orange berry floral picks at Michael’s at the beginning of October before all the lovely Orange fall goods were clearanced away (and since they were half off it required trips to several locations)! But don’t worry, you can still find amazing deals and a huge selection in December.

Oh and make sure to keep an eye on the weekend circulars from Macy’s and JCPenney and the like – today at my local mall all of their Christmas decorations were 30% and 50% off respectively. Plus they they had many trees organized by theme or color scheme (for more inspiration) and tons of ornaments to choose from!

Finally, don’t forget yard sales, thrift stores and our beloved Etsy. They are all great resource for vintage pieces that will add some unique flavor to your tree! In fact, check back on Friday where I’ll be sharing a few of my most wanted from Etsy for this weeks 4 for Friday!

Until then – let’s talk Christmas Trees! What theme or colors will adorn your tree this year? Do you have any money saving, decorating tips? Share in the comments!

  1. My Christmas tree needs to be two things: fake and sturdy! My cats seem to think that the tree is a jungle gym and dental floss all rolled into one, and you don’t wanna know what happens if there’s a real tree in the house with my numb-skull dogs! Hahah

Our tree is a mix of “favorite” ornaments from when we were kids, bright neon-ish colors, and each year we go get one new ornament each. There’s not really a “theme” to our tree, just like there’s not really a theme to our house! My friends call us flea market chic, and my 14 year old brother thinks we’re “eccentric”, haha!

  2. I love decorating my tree! I did it really early this year (right before Thanksgiving) and I’m so glad I have all of Dec. to enjoy it. My British hub has this rule too that the tree has to be down by the Jan 7th, or you’ll have bad luck all year. (British superstition!) Anyway…

I started my collection my going to a flea market and found boxes of old glass balls. Then added to it by going to the Dollar store. They’re plastic, but no one can tell. So my tree has a base of silver and gold, with every color of the rainbow thrown on top! Particularly purple and red.

I have an fake tree too, and dream of one made of tinsel or feathers for a second tree!

  3. My tree theme is bows. I have silver, bright red, dark red, and brown bows. The brown were new to the tree last year when my boyfriend and I moved in together, as his living room furniture was all brown, so it ties in the room. I also have large bows on the windows, lamps and railings, so everything goes together. I started doing this when I lived in an apartment in a converted Victorian house. I still love it even though my boyfriend wants something more modern.

  4. I always buy a Fraiser Fir from a nursery in my neighborhood. It’s more expensive, but I like keeping my $ local when I can, and I love the piney smell. I don’t have a theme, just a big collection of ornaments that belonged to my grandparents and parents mixed with things I’ve picked up over the years. You’ve given us a great bunch of tips, @kate2004rock! Great post!

  5. I don’t know if my tree has a theme, but it is fun to look at. I have those bright colored bulbs in pink, turquoise, orange, green, and red all over the place and a few sentimental ornaments from my childhood, a few really nice ones at the top (Wedgewood, sterling bells that my mom got me when I was born and my hubby when we got married, and a few higher end ornaments), and then there are some groupings on the rest of the tree: Comic book heroes for my hubby (including the Hulk wearing a Santa hat climbing down a chimney),” A Christmas Story”, “Star Wars”, “Star Trek”, then there’s the random oddball ones (we add at least one asinine ornament a year)–the oddballs are my favorite. We have a chicken playing the accordion that plays “The Chicken Dance”, a glass chicken holding a tree, a monkey head, a glitter armadillo, ballet pig, skiing hippo, sock monkey, and other weirdly random ones. It makes me smile just to look at how ridiculous our ornaments are :)

  6. I have a little metallic pink tree that I got in the dollar bins at Target one year. There were even mini ornaments in the dollar bins too! It definitely spruced up my dorm room :)

  7. Great post Katie. Love decorating for Christmas. I now have three trees in my home to decorate. My kids were begging me for a tree in their room, so I bargained shopped at Target and got the most adorable mini trees with lights already attached. Found some cute mini ornaments and let them decorate away.

Love the idea for the cookie cutter ornaments. Mine sit in a bag all year long. I bet they would look adorable with a little ribbon attached. One year I made my own ornaments out of dough I baked. Those suckers are still going strong. A few have broken over the years, but most have lasted. Great project to do with kids.

  8. I don’t have a tree this year which really makes me sad. My new apartment is really tiny and I couldn’t figure out where to put it so I just didn’t put it up. But when I have room again it will be going up. I love it. It’s a 5 footer and and my nephew and I picked out all the ornaments so it’s a hodge podge tree. (He was 3 when he helped me pick them out) It has everything under the sun, frogs with Santa hats, random colors of bulbs, snowmen, Santa, cartoons, and snowflakes. It makes me smile whenever I put it up.

  9. BYW if you go to my facebook page you can see the pictures of how my tree turned out!
