If ever there was ever a haircare line that deserved to be called iconic, it’s Herbal Essences. I can still picture the pretty label on my mom’s bottle of their original shampoo, back when they just had one product (the singularly named “herbal essence”). And who can forget their kind-of-naughty 1990’s “totally organic experience” commercials? If you’re an American woman, I guarantee that Herbal Essences looms large in your own beauty history. This is a line that could rest on its laurels and still be legendary.
But that’s not going to happen. Herbal Essences just launched their biggest undertaking since the original classic shampoo hit the market 45 years ago, and it’s massive. NINE new shampoo and conditioner duos (and a handful of companion products) that offer the “ultimate shower experience.”
I’d like to introduce you to NEW Herbal Essences with bio:renew
I bet you’re wondering, what is bio:renew? Just like the name implies, bio:renew is a combination of ingredients that blends technology with purity. bio:renew products are free of colorants, parabens and gluten, and full of natural ingredients designed to revive and, yes, renew hair. Antioxidants, aloe and sea kelp help the bio:renew formula deliver its signature silky shine.
The new heavenly-scented varieties include:
Argan Oil of Morocco – fizzy citrus, exotic spice and creamy vanilla. Shampoo, conditioner and oil-infused crème for silkiness and shine.
Coconut Milk – white floral bouquet blended with coconut and vanilla. Shampoo, conditioner and oil-infused crème for deep hydration.
Cucumber & Green Tea – green leaves, watery lily and clean amber. Shampoo, conditioner and dry shampoo for lightweight moisture.
Vitamin E & Cocoa Butter – black cherry, almond cream and spicy amber. Shampoo and conditioner help restore strength and softness. I tested this duo and loved it. The scent is warm and long-lasting, and the formula is creamy and moisturizing. Lots of rich lather! It was easy to comb my hair while it was wet, and it dried soft and silky. I had extra volume, too.
Passion Flower & Rice Milk – citrus, passion fruit and creamy orange blossom. Shampoo and conditioner for deep nourishment.
Arabica Coffee Fruit – crushed berries, caramel latte and patchouli. Shampoo and conditioner for added volume. Stef tried this duo and is mesmerized by the scent, which she describes as “more high end perfume than drugstore shampoo.” She’ll share more of her thoughts in the comments…
Golden Moringa Oil – juicy orange, white floral bouquet and coconut water. Shampoo and conditioner for sleek, glossy hair.
Rosemary & Herbs Naked Moisture – herbs, clean mint and sandalwood. Shampoo and conditioner for clean hydration. I got to sample this duo and was impressed by how gentle it was while cleaning like a clarifying shampoo. My hair was definitely clean, to the extent that I had to take my time combing it out (nothing coating the strands), but it dried shiny and smooth. The scent is invigorating but not overpowering.
White Grapefruit & Mosa Mint Naked Volume – fresh citrus, clean mint and velvet peach. Shampoo, conditioner and dry shampoo for extra body, volume and movement.
The options are enticing, and no matter which collection you choose, Herbal Essences with bio:renew promises to “bring your hair back to life” in 21 days. I’m so pleased with the two duos I tested, I can’t wait to try out at least a few of the others. And really, they’re such a bargain, I might just try them all.
we heartsters, which scent/formula appeals to you? Share in the comments!
Ohh, passion fruit is totally calling to me, yum!
I got to try the Arabica Coffee Fruit, a volume formula duo with the notes of crushed berries, caramel latte and patchouli. OMG, it smells INCREDIBLE. Seriously, get yourself to the nearest drugstore and sniff this right away. I can’t get enough of it. It reminds me of a gourmand perfume scent. And the fragrance lasts, I smell it in my hair for a full day after washing. I probably look like some dope in a shampoo commercial swinging my head around to catch a whiff.
Scent aside, it’s a good formula too! Easy to comb through when wet and it doesn’t weigh my hair down with too many ‘cones.
It is a big deal for me to like a drugstore shampoo and conditioner, I’m a bit of a high end snob. I like this one, A LOT.
I am in love with the smell of the Arabica Coffee Fruit Shampoo as well! In fact, I love it so much I want a perfume that smells just like this! I have been looking for this scent profile for such a long time. Might you have any suggestions for me of a perfume that might give a nod to the scents in this shampoo!? (Maybe this is a super bizarre question but I have been combing the internet to see if anyone agrees with me…this is as close as I have found)
Kara, I don’t think that’s a bizarre question at all, and I’d love to find the answer, too. It’s such an amazing scent!
Kara – I KNOW! Isn’t it incredible? I seriously just had to go a smell it right now just thinking about it! I did some research for you and found some options…
-You might want to try Pacifica Himalayan Patchouli Berry: http://rstyle.me/n/ctepi5p37w which has white Patchouli, sugar and grapefruit. Not a total match, but could work.
-I think this Patchouli and Raspberry oil might be similar: http://www.patchouligarden.com/parapero.html
-Gypsy sounds very close; a blend Of Blackberry, Raspberry, Violet, Rosewood, Patchouli) http://www.theafterdarkapothecary.com/item_203/GYPSY.htm
-BUT! The one I think that sounds closest, the one I JUST ordered when I found it, is this: http://rstyle.me/n/cteps9p37w
It’s on Etsy and is called Alkemia. The notes are Ripe Raspberries, Jasmine Sambac, Caramel, Aphrodisiac Incenses, Patchouli. I’m hoping the incense isn’t too overpowering>
Let me know what you try, and I’ll let you know on this Etsy find.
Thanks for your comment, XO.
I’ve got to the smell these. I’m totally shallow and will buy hair products for their fragrance. I love the sounds of black cherry, almond cream and spicy amber!
I love Herbal Essences… their products do smell really good and are so reasonably priced! The only reason I stopped using them is because their products have SLS, which was fading my semi-permanent hair color really quickly. I might have to give them a try again eventually!
