Found! The perfect nude lip (six of them, in fact)
My back-to-school years are long behind me, but I’ve never lost my fetish for school supply shopping. And at the store, I always head straight for the crayons. I might not be coloring that much as an adult, but I still love the look, feel and smell of a fresh crayon.
A big box, chock full of colors, always makes my heart beat a little faster, but I never dreamed that six shades of nude could do the same thing. As always, Hourglass Cosmetics is ahead of the game, creating makeup joy in ways most companies would never envision.
The Femme Nude Lip Stylo ($30) brings us a “nude for every mood,” six naked shades that add fullness and dimension to the lips, creating a natural, longlasting finish. Basically a big retractable crayon housed in a heavy, luxurious tube, the wht team got an up close look at three of the shades:
Nude No. 2 – Honey Beige (light peaches and cream)
Nude No. 4 – Pink Beige, (light/medium nude pink cream)
Nude No. 5 – Shimmering Golden Peach, (pinkish-peach nude with faint shimmer)
Nude No. 2, Nude No. 4, Nude No. 5
I tested out Nude No. 4, a warm pink nude that comes close to the color of my lips, but perfects them with creamy, full coverage. The color has a slight gleam that keeps it from being too flat.
I also tried Nude No. 5, a rich warm nude enhanced with barely visible micro-shimmer that adds dimension and depth to the color without overt sparkle.
Nude No. 2, Nude No. 4, Nude No. 5
The formula is extremely creamy and the satin finish stays put for hours. Hourglass Cosmetics claims these chunky crayons will never need sharpening, and after a few weeks of heavy use, I think they’re right. Because I apply the color sideways, the pencil has retained its point. A turn mechanism in the pencil’s base will allow me to twist more product up when needed.
Pros:
• Between the six crayons, there is a perfect nude for practically any skintone.
• Packaging is heavy and solid. The lid shuts with a satisfying click.
• Hourglass is a cruelty-free brand.
• Femme Nude Lip Stylos are free of fragrance, parabens, sulfates and other harmful ingredients.
Cons:
• While most skintones could wear all six, the very darkest complexions may have trouble with the lightest shades.
I love the two colors I tested so much, I can’t wait to try the others. Trust me, you’re not going to be satisfied with just one. Or, in my case, two. Hey, Hourglass Cosmetics, my dream product would be a “crayon box” of all six!
we heartsters – do you plan on rocking a nude lip with a smoky eye this fall?

I am so feeling a nude lip for fall! And nude nails!??
The Nude no. 4 looks like it has just the right amount of color for my skintone – I would love to give these a try!
Great review!
Wow these pinky/peachy nudes are so on trend! Totally not surprised that Hourglass has this collection out. While they seem a bit expensive, other companies with similar products are priced only a few dollars less.
I’m actually kind of glad you mentioned the “click” when the cap is closed. I have a few by other companies that are very similar but with standard caps. Some have cracked, making them not the super snug fit it originally was…some have also slid off inside my purse. That’s my only worry with these types of products but it seems like Hourglass did it right :)
You’re right @mandabear – Hourglass is the creme de la creme of packaging. After all my years beauty blogging, Hourglass stands at the top of my list for incredible, unique and luxe packaging. Happily, the products inside live up to the packaging!
I was relieved when I heard that solid “click” too. The luxe packaging keeps the crayon inside creamy!
These look so luxe and creamy! Definitely the most glam “school supplies” ever. Nude No. 4 looks right up my alley.
Nude for every mood? I love that there are so many shades of nudes!
Nude No 5 looks great, would definitely be great for a dramatic eye this fall.
I’m with @Turboterp – I’m buying more of these! I kept No. 2 when I swatched these, because I tend to lean towards pale tones. And it is just so perfect. It’s go the perfect amount of pigment and a creamy satin finish. I can slick a quick coat on for an easy nude, or apply more for an opaque look. It feels moist, never heavy. And c’mon with that packaging! It makes me happy every time I see it. No scent, no taste either. Which also makes me happy.
I kinda want femme pinks, femme reds, femme coral…ooo!!!
I like that these look “nude” in a “my lips but better” sort of way instead of a “pastel and really bad” sort of way! (Gossmakeupartist recently had a tip for gals wanting a nude lip–he said it’s difficult to pull off, but if you want to try it, aim for a color close to your natural lip color but one shade lighter–these lip stylos actually seem like they’d work wonderfully!)
I got to check out the No. 4 and I am smitten! I have blemish prone skin with blue undertones so I have never in my life thought, “Hmm, I wonder what I would look like in nude lipstick?” because I always assumed it would be horrible. No. 4’s pink undertone kept it from washing me out. Looks so feminine and helps highlight a special eye look. Our fearless leaders have such a good eye! Call me converted.
Thanks, Heather, for your comments. Helpful when making decisions.
@mandabear You nailed my #1 make-up pet peeve! Why is my purse pink?!? Haha. Caps that fall off are the worst!
@turboterp, you were on spot when you said Hourglass is “ahead of the game.” Their products are slightly pricey, but they place quality above all. I have never disappointed with an Hourglass product, and your crayon analogy was close to my heart! I will have to try a few of these!
That was to have read “I have never been disappointed.” I do my best proofreading after I hit the “enter” key!
I love everything about these, the colors the packaging, and with high praise, I will definitely be checking these out!
