Is it a Beauty Tip or a Beauty Myth?

Eucerin helps us to debunk some beauty myths…
I still remember the very first beauty tip I ever learned. I was about 7 years old and I asked my Grandmother why she kept all of her nail polishes in the refrigerator. “It’s just like eggs, it’ll keep fresher” she told me. And so began a lifetime of collecting beauty tips and tricks.
But just like any info passed from one person to the next, it’s not always accurate! In actuality, for every tip I learned, I probably learned three times as many myths. So for this month’s post in our duty as Eucerin Brand Ambassadors, let’s debunk some of those ones that we’ve all heard a thousand times…
Chocolate gives you pimples.
Oh, thank god this one is false! But if you eat TOO much chocolate, you probably don’t have the healthiest of diets, and poor diet can lead to poor skin. But chocolate in small doses? Absolutely fine for your skin.
Shaving makes your hair grow back darker and thicker.
Did anyone ever tell you this when you first started shaving as a way to get you to not rush into it? Well, it’s not the case. Real Simple explained it simply: “Uncut hair grows to a point, wide at the base and narrow at the tip. So when you shave a hair, you cut it at the base. The widest part then grows out, and the hair appears thicker.”
You can shrink your pores.
Sadly, this is not the case (says the girl with cave-like pores.) It’s impossible to change the size of pores. But what you can do is keep them clear to minimize their appearance. Clay masks, exfoliating products and anything to unclog pores will make them look smaller.
You can’t get a sunburn on a cloudy day
I tested this one myself this past weekend. In the name of science, of course! As you can see, my findings show this to be a complete myth…
A little cloud isn’t going to stop a burn. In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology reports that “up to 80 percent of the UV rays that cause sun damage penetrate clouds.” As clearly illustrated.
You need sunscreen. Everyday.
Eucerin makes two fabulous ones that we’ve been talking about all summer. Their Daily Protection Lotions do double duty; moisturizing and protecting skin from daily sun exposure. The SPF 15 Body Lotion helps protect against daily UV exposure, while SPF 30 Face Lotion moisturizes and protects with UVA/UVB sunscreens. Both are dermatologist recommended and fragrance-free. Use them and avoid the scene shown above!
And about that nail polish is the fridge tip? That’s not a myth! Experts say it will slow down the discoloration that comes with old polish. Way to go Granny!
we heartsters, let’s hear yours. What beauty tip did you later learn was really a myth?
Your Granny was right! I can hear mine saying the same thing about milk.. lol! Nothing worse than spoiled milk! And without chocolate, I’d be a very sad person, indeed but I’d still eat it, regardless!
Love the bathing suit lines you’re sporting there! Go beach baby!
I’m shocked at how much sun you got too!
yes to the chocolate myth haha! It was all over my teen magazines and everything. so silly. I LOVE chocolate!
Thank goodness the chocolate myth is just a myth! Otherwise I would be one giant pimple – heh. I need a little bit of chocolate every day or I’m not happy (just a taste – not a whole cake or anything!)
And @Stef – I hope you have finally learned your lesson and will be wearing your sunscreen like a good girl from ow on. *wags finger and gives a stern look*
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Eucerin’s SPF 15 body lotion. Wore it during a couple of beer festivals (outside, in the sun) and it kept my skin protected. This stuff is affordable and works well, so I’ll definitely be buying more.
The only beauty tip I ever got was to not wear too much makeup or I’d look like a whore.
That and not tweeze my eyebrows too much because they wouldn’t grow back right.
And I’d look like a whore.
My mom was not a nurturer. lol
@stef, Laughing like crazy. I learned the nail polish trick years back, when I was still single. I kept a number of bottles in the fridge. My mom and I noticed an acetone-like odor getting stronger and stronger by the day and wrote it off to the polishes. It was freon leaking!
That’s so funny! Good thing it wasn’t gas! :)
