Did you know that April is Rosacea Awareness Month? And unlike April’s World Rat Day or Cheese Fondue Day, Rosacea Awareness Month is actually very useful. (Sorry rat and cheese lovers.) Its main purpose is to “educate the public on the warning signs of this chronic but treatable facial disorder now estimated to affect more than 16 million Americans.” (source: Rosacea.org)
If you’re complexion is constantly red, you have bumps or lumps on your nose or your skin is sensitive beyond belief – you probably already know you have Rosacea. But what about if you just flush really easily or you have eye dryness, irritation and swelling? Yep, that can be Rosacea too. If you have any doubts or serious symptoms, see your dermatologist.
I’ve had a budding case of Rosacea that I’ve ignored for years. I’m in the mild category, so it was easy to fool myself into thinking “It’s just hot in here” or “Wow, my skin is really acting up right now” (like it was just a passing thing.) But I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that I have it. Luckily, to greet me with this acceptance is a whole slew of brands and products to target and counteract it.
Today I’m going to talk about the Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue line. The Australian, cruelty-free has been around for 25 years. The line was developed by a biochemist and his wife who wanted to combine alchemy, herbal medicine and homeopathy to bring people (and their skin) closer to nature. I’ve been a fan of Jurlique for ages. In fact, it was their Calendula Cream that got me hooked.
If you know me at all, you’ve heard me sing the praises of calendula. I use it for acne, but it also works wonders on scrapes, razor burn, skin irritations and more. If it can also calm my Rosacea, well then…I’m getting a calendula tattoo, because it’s officially a wonder herb. (The tattoo would actually be pretty cute, calendula comes from marigold flowers.) So I delved into the Calendula Redness Rescue products with glee.
First up, Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Restorative Treatment Serum ($54 for 30 ml) I rarely meet a serum I don’t like and this is no exception. The light gel formula soothes sensitive skin and provides a protective barrier against environmental aggressors while building up the skin’s epidermal defenses. It literally calm my skin on contact. It’s not at all oily or tacky, and it can be worn under makeup as it dries with a matte finish. I prefer to use it at night as I did get a bit of mild pilling when I apply foundation over it. But I usually only use serum at night anyway. I love the Restorative Treatment Serum as an end of the day “ahhhh!” for my skin. Like a treat for getting though the day. Bonus point: it smells like tea thanks to chamomile.
The Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Calming Mist ($38 for 100ml) is another instant soother. Spray it on your skin to calm and moisturize. This would be great to throw in your cooler for a day at the beach, to use after a facial treatment or whenever skin is in freak-out mode (weather changes, stress, etc.) I’ve been spraying myself in the am after washing my face and it’s a really refreshing, also tea-scented, way to start the day.
Finally, Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Soothing Moisturising Cream ($46 for 40ml) is the turbo hydrator of the trio. This is a rich cream. So rich I wouldn’t normally attempt to where it for fear of a breakout. But, because I’m familiar with Jurlique I know the trick. (Well, and I can also read the directions on the side of the package!)
The trick is warm this before applying by rubbing it between your fingers to make it more pliable, then pat it where you need it. It makes all the difference and allows you to target the cream where you need it; redness and dry spots, like around the nose.
They chose ingredients with anti-inflammatory properties that target redness and soothe any flare-ups. It has a list of healthy oils and herb extracts that almost sound more like a salad that a skincare product. But despite the oils, it’s not greasy at all. It makes my skin look fresh and dewy, and who doesn’t want that? But don’t expect the tea scent of the others, this smells intensely herbal.
Restorative Treatment Serum and Soothing Moisturising Cream
Though they’re not billed for Rosacea specifically, I really like the Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue collection. My skin definitely feels more calm and looks less red. Want to give it a try? There’s 3-piece trial kit from Sephora, the Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Essentials with large trial sizes for $58. Whatever the reason your skin is red or irritated, this will calm it as much as a cup of chamomile calms you!
All hail the Marigold, is right!
Love it! I really do like this line.. I have kept a mask on my sink for years.. love love love it! And the price is very reasonable for the amazing product it is!
That mist is calling my name!
I’ve been curious about Jurlique for awhile now, and your post makes me want to try something (or everything) from their Calendula line. The 3-piece trial kit sounds like a great introduction!
I’m a new fan of calendula and I’ve been a fan of Jurlique. Trying this is a no brainer! Great post, @stef! :D
